Either can serve as shared VM storage when the hypervisor and storage platform support the intended use. Choose based on your workload, supported failover design, network and storage limits, and the operational model your team can reliably maintain—then test that exact configuration.
What is the difference between iSCSI and NFS?
| Consideration | iSCSI | NFS |
|---|---|---|
| Storage interface | Block storage: an initiator accesses logical units (LUNs) presented by a target over IP. | File storage: hosts mount a shared filesystem exported by a server or storage system. |
| Typical configuration work | Configure target discovery, initiators, LUN access, network paths, and supported multipathing. | Configure exports, mounts, host permissions, and supported filesystem behavior. |
| Performance variables | Workload, target capabilities, block I/O path, session and path configuration, host settings, and network capacity. | Workload, storage server and filesystem, client and mount behavior, network flows, and network capacity. |
| Resilience to verify | Redundant target paths, multipath I/O (MPIO) behavior, and storage-service availability. | Storage-service redundancy, client behavior, and mount recovery. |
| VM operations to validate | Datastore or shared-disk support, migration, snapshots, backups, and consistency. | Datastore support, migration, filesystem semantics, snapshots, backups, and consistency. |
Both are networked shared-storage methods in Red Hat virtualization documentation, where shared network storage supports guest migration between hosts in the documented environment. That does not mean every hypervisor, storage product, or migration operation supports both protocols: check the exact platform and version documentation.

Which protocol is faster for virtual machines?
There is no protocol-neutral, apples-to-apples result in the cited documentation that establishes a universal winner. Throughput and latency depend on the workload’s I/O size and read/write mix, storage service limits, network capacity and competing traffic, host configuration, and the full path from guest to physical storage. A result from one platform or cloud service should not be treated as a prediction for another.

Measure the workload, not just peak throughput
Test representative VMs and compare both options under the same conditions: hardware, data set, queue depth, block sizes, read/write mix, and failure configuration. Measure latency, IOPS, throughput, and queueing. High throughput alone does not establish acceptable latency for small random I/O.

Microsoft’s Azure VMware Solution documentation describes Azure NetApp Files NFS datastore tests using read-to-write mixes of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. In that specific setup, it reports support for nconnect=4, which creates four parallel TCP connections per datastore per host. The page reports submillisecond traffic latency under minimal load and 2–3 ms under medium-to-heavy load for the described service environment. These are configuration-specific results, not generic NFS performance figures or a comparison with iSCSI.
Account for the complete virtual disk path
Microsoft’s Hyper-V storage guidance describes I/O passing through the guest storage stack, virtualization layer, host storage stack, and physical disk. A bottleneck or configuration choice anywhere along that path can affect performance, so changing the network protocol alone may not resolve a storage problem.

Virtual disk format also matters. Microsoft notes that fixed virtual disks can reduce fragmentation and mapping overhead, while dynamic and differencing disks have their own trade-offs. Long differencing or snapshot chains can impair I/O performance. Match virtual disk block size to the workload’s allocation patterns, as well as testing the storage protocol.

Which option is more resilient?
Resilience depends on how the storage service, hosts, and network are designed and how they behave during failures—not on the protocol name alone. Before deployment, verify that the hypervisor and storage system support the desired multipathing or service-recovery design.

- For iSCSI: Confirm redundant paths to the target, the supported MPIO policy, and how sessions and paths behave when a path or service fails.
- For NFS: Confirm the storage service’s redundancy, supported client and mount recovery behavior, and any required filesystem or locking semantics.
- For either protocol: Test path interruption, host restart, storage-service failover, and recovery. Confirm that backup and snapshot operations preserve consistency with the virtualization and application layers.
Session counts and multipath recommendations can be service-specific. For example, Microsoft’s Azure Elastic SAN guidance uses MPIO with multiple iSCSI sessions and recommends 32 sessions per target volume to reach that service’s maximum IOPS and throughput. This is guidance for Azure Elastic SAN, not a general iSCSI requirement or a number to apply to other targets.
How should you plan setup?
Start with the support matrix for the exact hypervisor, version, and storage system. Confirm support for the datastore or storage-pool use you need, including migration, snapshots, backup, and the intended redundancy features. Then plan the protocol-specific configuration.

iSCSI setup checklist
- Configure target discovery and host initiators according to the storage vendor’s and hypervisor’s supported procedures.
- Present the intended LUNs to the right hosts and verify access controls.
- Plan redundant network paths and configure only the supported MPIO policy.
- Check target, session, path, and host limits for the actual platform; do not transfer another service’s session-count guidance.
NFS setup checklist
- Configure the export, host permissions, and mount behavior supported by the storage system and hypervisor.
- Verify filesystem and locking semantics for the specific virtualization platform and operations you intend to use.
- Confirm how hosts handle mount recovery and storage-service failover, then test those cases.
Version-specific guidance matters. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Virtualization Administration Guide’s “Shared Storage Example: NFS for a Simple Migration” describes a narrow NFS scenario: it calls for synchronous export behavior, says NFS file locking is unsupported in that example, and limits the example to a few VMs. The guide says, “iSCSI storage is a better choice for large deployments.” Treat that as legacy, scenario-specific advice—not a current universal verdict. Check current Red Hat and storage-vendor documentation for your release and design.

- Prefer a filesystem-oriented workflow when your supported platform and storage product provide the NFS datastore operations you need and your team is equipped to manage exports, mounts, and recovery.
- Prefer a block-oriented workflow when your supported platform and storage product fit a LUN-based design and your team can configure and test initiators, paths, and MPIO.
- Do not decide from protocol labels alone. Compare vendor support, workload results, network and storage limits, failure behavior, and operational complexity in the intended deployment.
Microsoft’s Azure Elastic SAN guidance also notes that VM I/O to that service uses VM network bandwidth. Its recommendation is to provide enough VM bandwidth for both production and VM-to-VM traffic and iSCSI. That capacity consideration is specific to that service, but it illustrates why storage traffic must be assessed alongside other traffic on the host network.
