What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Sometimes—but not always. A service may use your email address as your username, let you sign in with several email aliases, or assign you a separate username. Check that service’s sign-in and account settings rather than assuming the terms mean the same thing.
Is my username my email address?
Not necessarily. The words describe different functions, even if the same text serves both. A username identifies an account to a particular service. An email address routes messages to a mailbox. The service decides which identifiers it accepts when you sign in.

Keep these account details distinct:
- Sign-in identifier: the username, email address, phone number, or alias the service accepts to locate your account.
- Email address: an address that can receive mail. It may also be a sign-in identifier, but that is a service-specific choice.
- Recovery or security contact: an address or phone number used for password recovery or security notices. It may not be accepted as the username.
Can my username be different from my email address?
Yes. Common arrangements include a username that is separate from the account’s email address, an email address used as the username, or multiple aliases that all lead to the same account. A recovery address can be separate from both.
When comparing accounts or services, check whether the accepted sign-in details are usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, or aliases; whether an address is also a mailbox; whether an alternate address points to the same account or creates another one; and which contact details are used only for recovery or alerts.

How do Google and Microsoft handle sign-in identifiers?
These are examples of provider-specific rules, not rules that apply to every website.
Google Account
Google lets users link an eligible non-Gmail address to an existing Google Account and use it for sign-in, recovery, and notifications. Google says the address cannot already be linked to another Google Account. Google also documents sign-in by phone number when that option is configured. See Google’s instructions for using another email to sign in and its phone-number sign-in guidance.

Gmail address rules
Gmail’s sign-in guidance describes the username as the part before @gmail.com. For consumer Gmail addresses, dots do not distinguish addresses; on work, school, and other organizational domains, dots can matter. Do not assume this punctuation rule applies to other email providers or services. See Gmail’s username guidance and its explanation of dots in Gmail addresses.

Microsoft supports multiple email aliases for the same account: its guidance describes an email address as another username that works with that Microsoft account. Those aliases do not necessarily represent separate accounts. Microsoft also distinguishes the username from the security contact used to recover it. How do I find my username?
- Check the service’s sign-in page. Read the field label and instructions: it may say username, email, phone, or “email or phone.” A familiar email address is not proof that it is the account’s username.
- Look in the account’s profile or security settings. If you can still sign in, check the account details for the username, linked aliases, and recovery contacts. Their roles may differ.
- Use the provider’s official recovery flow if you are locked out. Choose the option for a forgotten username or account identifier rather than guessing. Microsoft, for example, can use a security contact email or phone to help find a forgotten username; that contact may be used as security information for more than one account. Its username-recovery instructions explain the process.
- For a Microsoft account, check whether the address is recognized. Microsoft provides a sign-in page check for an email address. For other providers, use their own account dashboard or official recovery page.
Can I use my email to sign in?
Only if that service accepts it for your account. An email address may be the primary username, one of several aliases, a recovery contact only, or unrelated to sign-in. Follow the service’s own instructions, especially if an address could be associated with more than one account or domain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a username or email address protect my account?
No. An identifier tells a service which account you intend to access; it is not authentication by itself. The service’s password and any other required sign-in checks determine access. If you receive a sign-in alert you do not recognize, follow the provider’s security guidance. Microsoft recommends reviewing recent activity after an unusual sign-in alert and keeping security contact information current; see Microsoft’s unusual sign-in guidance.

In technical analytics documentation, “User-ID” can mean something different again: Google Analytics describes it as an identifier a business generates and assigns to associate a user across sessions and platforms. That is an analytics implementation, not a consumer sign-in rule. See Google Analytics’ User-ID documentation.
