For many eligible homes with a working cable outlet, self-installing Xfinity Internet is straightforward: connect the gateway, power it on, then follow the Xfinity app’s activation prompts. Xfinity estimates activation takes about 20 minutes, but that is a provider estimate—not a guarantee. The main hurdles are confirming you qualify for a kit, having an active outlet, and being able to sign in to your account.
Check whether your home qualifies for self-install
Before relying on a Getting Started Kit, confirm that the installation is available for your address and account. Xfinity says eligibility requires that the home currently has or previously had Xfinity service, has working cable and electrical outlets at the chosen location, needs fewer than four devices installed, and is in a kit service area. What you need before connecting the gateway
Most Xfinity Internet kits include a leased WiFi Gateway, its power cord, and a coax cable. Xfinity notes an exception for fiber-to-the-unit installations. - The gateway, coax cable, and power cord from the kit
- A working cable outlet and nearby electrical outlet
- A phone, tablet, or computer with the Xfinity app
- Your Xfinity ID and password
Most customers should not need to buy a coax cable. Consider a replacement or longer RG6 coax cable only if the included cable is missing, damaged, or too short; that exception does not apply to the cited fiber-to-the-unit kit setup.
How to install and activate Xfinity Internet
- Connect the coax cable. Attach one end to the wall cable outlet and the other to the gateway.
- Power on the gateway. Plug in its power cord and wait for the gateway lights to stop blinking before continuing, as Xfinity’s new-customer instructions advise.
- Activate in the app. Open the Xfinity app, sign in with your Xfinity ID, and follow the prompts. The app checks the connection and indicates whether another step is needed. Follow Xfinity’s gateway activation instructions.
- Set up WiFi. Set or confirm the WiFi network name and password, then connect your devices. Xfinity says you can reuse your previous network name and password to avoid reconnecting devices individually.
- Place the gateway well. Avoid cramped spaces and place it a few feet above the floor, following Xfinity’s current activation guidance. Xfinity gateway activation instructions.
How long does self-install take?
Xfinity’s current app activation instructions estimate about 20 minutes. Its new-customer guide also says activation may take a few minutes. These are provider estimates, not independent measurements or a promise that every installation will finish within a set time. Do not confuse setup duration with the activation window. For most orders, Xfinity says activation can happen any time from the day equipment arrives through up to seven days afterward. What to do if activation fails
- Check both connections. Make sure the coax cable is firmly attached at the wall and gateway, and confirm the power cord is fully connected.
- Restart the gateway. Unplug it for 30 seconds, then reconnect it and allow it to start up.
- Check the outlet. Use the app’s connection check. If the outlet is not active, try another available cable outlet.
- Follow the app’s next step. If the gateway still will not activate, use Xfinity’s self-install troubleshooting guide or its support/contact options.
An unsuccessful activation does not by itself prove that a technician is required. The right next step depends on the address, account, and condition of the outlets.

If your kit includes X1 TV equipment
For an X1 kit that includes a gateway, Xfinity recommends activating the wireless gateway first, then the primary TV box, and then any additional TV boxes. If you already have a gateway or ordered video service only, connect and activate the X1 equipment according to Xfinity’s instructions. See Xfinity’s X1 self-install steps.
