Xbox Game Pass stays appealing only if it makes gaming easier to access, feels worth the price, and keeps bringing players something new. Those are the three priorities Michael Crider argues for in a PCWorld opinion feature published August 18, 2026—not a Microsoft strategy announcement. Whether the service is worth it for you depends on the games and devices you use, and on which plan’s benefits you will actually take advantage of.
What does Xbox Game Pass include, and which plan fits?
Game Pass is a subscription catalog, but the plan determines which games and features you get. The official Xbox US plan comparison lists these two options with cloud gaming:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Plan | US monthly price | Included games | New releases | Cloud playtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ultimate | $22.99/month | 500+ games | New games on day one | 15 hours/month, beginning November 2026 |
| Premium | $14.99/month | 200+ games | New Xbox-published games join within 12 months of launch | 10 hours/month, beginning November 2026 |
These are US plan-page figures; prices, names, features, included games, and regional availability can change. Xbox says availability varies by plan, region, and platform. PC Game Pass is a separate PC-only plan, and cloud gaming is not included with it. Check the official Xbox plan comparison for the terms available to you.
A larger catalog or a day-one benefit does not automatically make a plan a better deal. Compare its monthly cost with the games you expect to play and the features you will use. The available plan information does not establish a universal break-even point.

Can you play Game Pass games on a phone or TV?
Cloud gaming is the part of Game Pass that can extend play beyond a console or PC. Xbox supports cloud play on select devices, including phones and TVs, but “play anywhere” has practical limits: you need a supported device, a compatible controller, and high-speed internet. Availability also depends on region and plan. See Xbox Cloud Gaming’s supported-device and setup information before choosing a device for it.
Crider’s accessibility argument goes beyond adding screens. Streaming can put games on devices people already own, including inexpensive tablets and phones, but an unreliable connection makes it less useful at home, while traveling, or in transit. He suggests broader access, including Linux and Android, and more local play. Those are proposals, not confirmation that every Game Pass game runs on those platforms or can be played offline.

How much cloud playtime do Game Pass plans allow?
Microsoft announced that monthly cloud gaming limits will begin in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. It said players could buy additional hours, with pricing and further details to come. Xbox Wire Editor-in-Chief Joe Skrebels wrote, “We expect this upcoming change to impact 4% of Game Pass subscribers.” That 4% is Microsoft’s estimate, not an independent measurement. Read the Xbox Wire announcement for its terms.
The limits matter most to people who use cloud gaming frequently or rely on it as their main way to play. For occasional sessions, the monthly allowance may be less important than whether the plan includes the games they want. Consider both the hours available and the internet and device requirements when weighing cloud access.

Why does Crider say Game Pass needs to improve accessibility?
Crider’s first priority is reducing barriers to playing: let people use more of the devices they already own, and make the service less dependent on a fast, stable connection. Cloud streaming can bring games to screens that do not run them locally, but it cannot remove network problems. His suggestions about Linux, Android, and local play are recommendations for widening access—not descriptions of current, universal Game Pass support.
In a live audience poll on The Full Nerd, Crider reported that 18% of respondents were current subscribers, 27% were former subscribers, 4% said they would subscribe if Game Pass came to Linux, and 51% were not subscribed. He called it a “quick and informal poll.” It is a snapshot of that audience, not a representative survey of subscribers or the gaming market.

Is Game Pass still good value if the price rises?
Crider’s value concern is that a broad bundle can feel like poor value when its price rises or when subscribers pay for benefits they rarely use. Modular choices could let people pay for a more relevant combination of games and features, while a lower-cost entry point might give prospective subscribers a reason to try the service. These are his recommendations, not announced Xbox plans.
For your own decision, start with the titles you expect to play and compare them with the plan’s price, platform support, day-one access, and cloud allowance. A large library is useful only if it contains games you want to play; paying for a feature you do not use does not improve the value of the subscription.

Why does Game Pass need both familiar games and novelty?
Crider’s third priority is keeping the catalog fresh without losing its dependable base. A stable selection gives subscribers reasons to return, while new releases create reasons to join or stay. His proposed compromise is a 24-hour window in which lower-tier subscribers could try new releases: “give players a 24-hour period to play those new games.” That is a suggestion, not a current Game Pass benefit.
The official plan comparison instead distinguishes tiers by when certain new games arrive: Ultimate includes new games on day one, while new Xbox-published games join Premium within 12 months of launch. Whether that timing is worth the price difference depends on how much you care about playing those titles at launch.
What would make Game Pass worth keeping?
Crider’s argument is that the service must make a convincing case on all three fronts: access on useful devices under real-world connection conditions, a price and plan structure that matches what subscribers use, and a catalog that balances dependable choices with new releases. For an individual subscriber, the practical test is narrower: does the plan include games you intend to play, on devices you can use, at a cost that makes sense for you?
