A free plan can cover basic browsing, but its server choice and access to local Indonesian servers may be limited. For an Indonesian IP or streaming, check that the specific plan includes the required location and service before paying.
Choose a VPN by what you need it to do
A VPN routes your traffic through a VPN server and changes the IP address websites see. It can help protect traffic on public Wi-Fi, but it does not make you anonymous: accounts, cookies, device security, and other tracking methods still matter. Nor does a VPN guarantee access to every blocked website or streaming catalog.

- Basic privacy: Focus on the provider’s privacy and security documentation, the app’s protections, and whether its free plan has limits that work for you.
- An Indonesian IP while abroad: Choose a plan that includes an Indonesian exit server. A nearby server in another country does not provide an Indonesian IP.
- Streaming: Look for recent tests of the particular platform and country you care about. Access can change, so a provider’s feature claims are not a guarantee.
What a free VPN plan can—and cannot—offer
Proton VPN says its Free plan has no time, speed, or data-use cap, but that does not mean it has the same features as a paid plan. In its Indonesia-focused guide, Top10VPN reports that Proton’s free plan has no Indonesian servers and does not let free users choose a server location. The review also says free servers do not support P2P or bypass streaming geo-restrictions. These are reviewer findings, not provider statements; check the current plan terms before relying on them. That may be suitable for some ordinary browsing needs, but it will not give you an Indonesian IP address. If server choice or a particular country’s exit IP matters, confirm the free plan’s current locations and selection rules first.

When an Indonesian server is essential
If you are outside Indonesia and need websites to see an Indonesian IP, the VPN must offer an Indonesian exit location on the plan you use. Proton’s Indonesia page describes connecting to its Indonesian servers and selecting a low-load server. Before subscribing, check the app’s country list and confirm that Indonesia is available on your intended plan. Server locations and plan features can change; a provider’s page does not establish the speed you will get from your own country or network.

Streaming access is time-sensitive
Streaming services may block VPN traffic or change which titles are available by region. Top10VPN reports that in its tests, selected paid services accessed Indonesian Netflix, Vidio, Genflix, and Viu. It also reports finding ExpressVPN and NordVPN effective for several Indonesia-related streaming services. - Define the job: Decide whether you need basic privacy, an Indonesian IP from abroad, or a specific streaming service.
- Check the plan, not just the provider: Confirm Indonesian server access, server selection, data limits, device allowance, and any P2P or streaming restrictions on the tier you intend to use.
