Several separate X outages have been reported, so the answer to “what caused X to go down?” depends on the date. For the June 22, 2026 incident, Forbes reported that X attributed the disruption to software issues, but the specific component was not identified. Reuters described a separate brief outage on March 18, 2026, without reporting a confirmed cause. In March 2025, Elon Musk blamed a cyberattack, but public reporting did not establish who was responsible. These incidents should not be treated as one outage.
Is X down right now?
This article covers reported incidents on June 22, 2026, March 18, 2026, and March 10, 2025; it cannot establish X’s live status at the moment you read it. To check whether a problem is widespread, look at an independent outage tracker such as Downdetector and compare its reports with what you see in the app or on the website. A cluster of reports can indicate a broader disruption, but tracker submissions are not a count of every affected user and do not reveal X’s internal cause.

If reports are not rising broadly, check whether X works on another connection or device. That can help distinguish a possible local connection or device issue from a wider service interruption; it does not diagnose X’s systems.

| Date | What was reported | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| June 22, 2026 | Forbes reported that X attributed the outage to software issues. Nearly 36,000 reports were submitted in roughly half an hour, according to the outlet; these were reports, not a count of all affected users. | The failing software component and a technical postmortem were not identified in the cited coverage. |
| March 18, 2026 | Reuters reported that X recovered after a brief outage. Downdetector recorded more than 34,500 reports at the peak, but its user-submitted figures may differ from the number of people actually affected. | Reuters did not identify a confirmed cause. |
| March 10, 2025 | Reuters reported that Musk described the incident as a powerful cyberattack. It also cited an internet-infrastructure source describing waves of denial-of-service traffic. Downdetector recorded 39,021 U.S. reports at the peak around 10 a.m. ET; that was a tracker count, not a total of affected users. | The reporting did not settle who was behind the traffic. Reuters disputed Musk’s geographic claim and noted that IP addresses do not reliably identify an attack’s operators. |
Why is X not working for me?
A platform outage is only one possible explanation. If an outage tracker shows a broad surge in reports, the problem may be service-wide. If it does not, try the following checks without assuming that any one of them explains a wider incident:
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Open X on a different device or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Check whether the app and website behave differently.
- Refresh the page or close and reopen the app, then check the tracker again.
These steps can help isolate a local problem, but they cannot repair an interruption on X’s side. Buying or changing hardware is not an established fix for a platform outage.
What outage trackers can—and cannot—tell you
Services such as Downdetector collect reports from users. A sudden rise can be a useful signal that other people are encountering problems, but it is not a census of affected accounts. Counts can also differ by incident and reporting window, so figures from separate outages should not be treated as directly comparable measures of severity.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
A tracker can help answer whether problems appear widespread; it cannot confirm X’s root cause, validate an attribution claim, or guarantee that your own account is affected for the same reason.
How to stay reachable during an X outage
If people depend on your account for publishing, support, or updates, keep an independent communication channel or status page available. An external channel remains usable when the platform you rely on is unavailable, and gives customers or colleagues somewhere else to check for updates.
