WordPress is not automatically easy to hack, but no website platform is immune to compromise. A site’s risk depends on whether its software is maintained, how administrator accounts are protected, what access and traffic controls are in place, and whether the owner can recover safely. Security measures reduce risk; they cannot eliminate it.
How WordPress sites get hacked
Compromises can begin in WordPress itself or in the systems and accounts around it. Common routes include attempts to exploit outdated WordPress core, plugins, themes, or other software; password-guessing attacks against login pages; weak server or hosting security; and unsafe account or network practices. WordPress’s official hardening guidance notes that using a managed host does not remove the site owner’s responsibility for application security.

WordPress.org says WordPress powers more than 43% of the web, but that prevalence figure is not a measure of how often WordPress sites are hacked or the likelihood that any one site will be compromised. The page does not state the year for the figure. WordPress.org’s security page provides no comparable hack-rate statistic.

How to secure a WordPress site
Prioritize the controls that reduce common points of exposure. No single plugin, host, or security measure makes a site invulnerable.

1. Update WordPress, themes, and plugins
Install updates promptly for WordPress core and every active theme and plugin. Choose extensions that are actively maintained, and remove those you no longer use. Outdated software may leave known vulnerabilities open to attack. WordPress’s hardening guide covers software maintenance and extension selection.
2. Protect privileged accounts
Use a strong, unique password for each administrator account and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for administrators and other privileged users. WordPress core does not include 2FA, so it requires compatible plugin or identity-provider support. Keep recovery access available in case an authentication method is lost. WordPress’s brute-force guidance also discusses passkeys and security keys as phishing-resistant login options when the site’s authentication setup supports them. A security key by itself does not secure a WordPress site.

- DUAL INTERFACE SMART CARD: Contactless NFC ISO 14443 plus ISO 7816 contact reader support in an ISO 7810 ID-1 format that is passive and needs no battery
- SWISS ENGINEERED DESIGN: Built by Cryptnox as a single card for authentication and access control and backed by a 2 year warranty
3. Limit access and reduce unnecessary exposure
Use trusted sources for themes and plugins, give administrative access only to people who need it, and consider disabling dashboard file editing if that fits the site’s workflow. Rate limiting login attempts and using a firewall or host-provided filtering can add protection where appropriate. These are layers, not substitutes for updates and strong account security.
When comparing a host, plugin, or security service, check which layer it covers—account access, software maintenance, traffic filtering, monitoring, or recovery—and who operates it. Also establish what support and restore process is available. The relevant controls depend on the site and its configuration; no single product is established as best for every WordPress site.

4. Keep and test backups
Back up both site files and the database, store backups safely, and verify that they can be restored. A known-good backup can help restore service after an incident, but restoring alone does not fix the vulnerability or access weakness that allowed the intrusion.

Follow a containment and investigation process rather than restoring a backup and immediately treating the incident as resolved. WordPress’s hacked-site FAQ recommends locking down access to minimize further changes, resetting passwords—especially administrator passwords—and changing the secret keys in wp-config.php to invalidate existing login sessions. Use a backup as part of recovery, then identify and address the entry point before returning to normal operations.

What WordPress security can—and cannot—promise
WordPress’s Advanced Administration Handbook describes security as “risk reduction, not risk elimination.” That is the right way to think about site protection: updates, account controls, filtering, and tested backups can reduce exposure and improve recovery, but none guarantees that an attack will fail.
