Wolfenstein: Youngblood is most appealing if you can play its co-op-focused shooter with a friend and enjoy flexible missions, character banter, and RPG-style progression. You can play solo, but the companion AI is a meaningful caveat: a 2019 Time review found it unreliable in difficult fights. If a compelling story or a strong endgame is your main reason to play, this entry may be a weaker fit.
What kind of Wolfenstein game is Youngblood?
Released on July 26, 2019, Wolfenstein: Youngblood follows Jess and Soph Blazkowicz, daughters of BJ Blazkowicz, as they search for their missing father in Nazi-occupied Paris. The setting is fictional alternate history, not a claim about real historical events. The Parisian Catacombs act as a base, and Bethesda said missions could be tackled in any order. The launch platforms announced by Bethesda were PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Bethesda made co-op a central feature. The action takes place across semi-open areas, with character abilities supporting different approaches, including stealth and close combat, as described in the 2019 Time review. That review characterized the experience as a co-op run-and-gun shooter; its positive impressions are one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee of every player’s experience.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood pros
Co-op gives the game its clearest advantage
Playing with a friend is the best-supported reason to choose Youngblood. Time’s 2019 reviewer found the co-op fun and praised the sisters’ banter and characterization. Bethesda’s launch announcement also said players could use in-game voice chat during co-op. The game’s structure and character abilities give partners room to approach fights differently.
#1 Best Overall
- Team up with a friend or play alone with an AI companion in the first modern co-op Wolfenstein adventure. Perform new Tag team maneuvers, crank up the Voltage with the devastatingly powerful new co-op weapon, the Tesla gun, and show off your flair with skins and emotes
- Wolfenstein: young Blood features the most open-ended Wolfenstein experience to date. From a new base of operations located deep in the heart of the Paris Catacombs, plan how and when to attack and dismantle the Nazi regime
- the wonder years, these are not. Featuring harrowing takes on iconic Parisian landmarks to graffiti-tagged streets, leather-clad Nazis, and an all-new soundtrack inspired by the synth heavy tones of classic 80s action films
- Wield the latest advancements in power armor Tech, weaponry, and armor to stamp out Nazi scum. Level up, explore, and complete missions to unlock new abilities, weapon attachments, gadgets, cosmetics, and more to complement your playstyle
Flexible missions and varied approaches
Bethesda described missions that can be completed in any order, while the cited review noted semi-open zones and abilities suited to approaches such as stealth or close combat. This can appeal if you like choosing what to tackle next rather than following one strictly linear mission sequence.
Progression adds another layer to the shooting
The game’s RPG-style progression and character abilities give players choices beyond aiming and firing. That extra layer is a plus if you enjoy building a character and adapting your approach; it may be less attractive if you want a more straightforward shooter with minimal progression systems.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood cons
Solo play depends on an AI partner
Yes, you can play Youngblood solo, but solo suitability is qualified by the companion AI. Time’s 2019 reviewer found the AI partner unreliable during difficult fights. That is a dated review judgment rather than a claim about every encounter, but it matters if you expect the game to provide the same dependable coordination as a human co-op partner.
The story may not satisfy every series fan
Although the review praised the sisters’ characterization and banter, the same reviewer found the story less engaging than earlier entries’ treatment of their themes. If narrative and thematic depth are your top priorities, that criticism is worth weighing against the appeal of playing as the two sisters.

The endgame may not give you much reason to stay
Time’s reviewer felt the endgame offered too little incentive to continue. The review also reported that their playthrough took approximately eight hours; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a general campaign-length benchmark. If you want a substantial repeatable endgame after the story, the cited assessment suggests caution.
Cosmetic purchases were noted in the 2019 review
The reviewer noted cosmetic microtransactions and said they did not feel pressured to buy them. This is a review-era observation, not confirmation of the game’s current monetization or store contents.

Verdict: Is Wolfenstein: Youngblood worth it?
It is easiest to recommend to players who want a co-op-focused shooter to play with a friend and value flexible missions, character interaction, and progression.
