WO Mic is a legitimate utility that turns a phone into a computer microphone; the available evidence does not establish that WO Mic itself is malware. That does not certify every installer or copy found online. If antivirus software flags a file, do not dismiss or restore it automatically: check the exact detection, file path and download source first.
What WO Mic installs
WO Mic sends audio captured by a phone to a computer, where Windows can expose it to other apps as a microphone. The system has three parts: the phone app, the WO Mic Client on the computer, and a virtual audio device installed by a Windows driver. The driver is a system-level component, but a virtual microphone, audio capture and a kernel-level driver are not inherently signs of malware. WO Mic’s product overview lists USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct as connection methods.

The audio path is: phone microphone → WO Mic app → USB, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi → Windows client → WO Mic virtual microphone → the app using that input.
What the malware reports do—and do not—show
Users reported suspected malware, Trojan or coin-miner detections in BleepingComputer forum threads from November 2020, May 2022 and January 2025. These reports document alerts and user experiences; they do not independently prove that the official product, or a current release, is malicious. The available evidence does not include an authoritative, independently verified malware analysis that establishes WO Mic as malware. 2020 report, 2022 report and 2025 report.

| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| One antivirus alert | A security product classified a particular file or behavior. | That the whole product is malware, or that the classification is correct. |
| VirusTotal result | Participating engines flagged a submitted file hash at the time of the scan. | That every detection is accurate, current or confirmed by behavioral analysis. |
| Forum report | A user says they encountered an alert or suspected a problem. | Independent proof of cause or of the behavior of other versions. |
| Official version information | The developer’s stated release details and distribution. | Independent confirmation that a hosted file is uncompromised. |
| Hash or digital signature | Whether a file matches a particular identity or signed publisher, if a trustworthy reference exists. | That the matching file is safe without trustworthy analysis of that sample. |
| Sandbox or reverse-engineering report | Observed behavior of the specific sample examined. | That every release behaves identically. |
What the official download page says
Wolicheng’s Windows download page lists WO Mic Client version 6.3 and driver version 2.1.0.0, and describes the installer as unsigned, warning that Windows may display a download warning. Those are the developer’s published details, not an independent safety certification. The page recommends checking the file with VirusTotal, but that recommendation is not itself a malware-test result.
The same page lists an installer size of 1,743,456 bytes. A matching size or version can help identify a file, but neither proves its integrity. The page does not provide a publisher hash in the information available here.

How to assess an antivirus alert
“Trojan,” “CoinMiner” or “PUP” is not enough information to decide whether the alert is a false positive. The detection might concern the WO Mic installer, its driver, a different file found in the same scan, or a modified download. An unsigned installer and a low-level driver may attract scrutiny, but those facts alone do not explain or invalidate a specific detection.

- Record the details. Note the antivirus product and version, exact detection name, full file path, filename and extension, alert date, and where the file came from. Save the quarantine record or a screenshot.
- Check the source and identity. Compare the file with the official download page and listed version. If you use a hash lookup, rely on a reference you can trust; a matching hash only identifies a sample, it does not by itself establish safety.
- Scan the computer. Run a full scan with Windows Security. If the alert involves persistence, a driver, or a file that cannot be removed while Windows is running, use Microsoft Defender Offline. A second reputable scanner can provide another opinion, but no single clean scan proves a computer is free of malware.
- Respond to credible signs of active compromise. Temporarily disconnect from the internet if an alert indicates active malicious activity, credential theft or suspicious network communication. Change important passwords from a separate, known-clean device only if there is credible evidence that credentials may have been exposed. Seek qualified help for persistent or high-confidence detections.
Do not upload confidential work files or proprietary material to public scanning services. A scan result for one file cannot clear other files, scheduled tasks, browser changes or account activity.

How to tell whether your copy came from the intended source
- For Windows, use the developer’s official download page. A search result, software mirror, forum attachment, cracked package or lookalike domain is not equivalent.
- For Android, the listed app is WO Mic on Google Play, published under Wolicheng Tech. For iPhone, the listed app is WO Mic on Apple’s U.S. App Store.
- Keep the components distinct: a store listing for the phone app does not certify a separately downloaded Windows client or driver.
- Check the Windows file’s name, path and version, and note whether Windows reports a publisher signature. The developer says its installer is unsigned; that explains a possible warning but does not authenticate a copy from a mirror.
Mobile permissions and privacy
Wolicheng’s privacy page describes microphone permission for audio capture, Bluetooth and network permissions for transport, and a wake lock to keep the phone awake while streaming. It also lists coarse location permission and says it is used for advertising. These permissions are broadly consistent with the stated function, but whether advertising-related access is acceptable is a separate privacy decision. The developer’s privacy statements are self-reported, not an independent audit.
The Google Play listing describes Bluetooth, USB and Wi-Fi use and indicates ads and in-app purchases. Store availability is a distribution signal, not proof that every component is malware-free.

How to uninstall WO Mic and its driver
The developer says ordinary removal should remove the WO Mic driver automatically. If the device remains, remove it separately:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Windows Settings, find installed apps, and uninstall WO Mic; alternatively, run its uninstaller.
- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click WO Mic Device and choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers an option to remove the driver software, select it, then restart Windows.
- After restart, check Device Manager and the installed-app list to confirm the device and client are gone.
These are product-cleanup steps, not malware remediation. Removing the client and virtual driver does not establish that an unrelated malicious file, persistence mechanism or account compromise is absent. See the developer’s FAQ for its removal instructions.

Normal warnings and failures that can look suspicious
- Windows warns about the installer: The developer says the Windows installer is unsigned. Do not bypass the warning unless you have independently established that the file is the one you intended to obtain.
- The device remains after uninstall: The virtual microphone driver may need removal in Device Manager using the steps above.
- The client reports a missing DLL: The official download page and FAQ direct users to install Microsoft’s x86 Visual C++ runtime.
- Wi-Fi connects briefly or drops: The FAQ points to firewall or antivirus blocking, network configuration, ports, and public-versus-private network settings. Confirm that the phone and PC can communicate on the chosen network; USB is described as a more robust, lower-latency option. See the operations reference.
- Audio is robotic or noisy: Wireless interference, CPU load or the phone’s selected audio source can affect audio quality; this symptom alone does not prove malware.
- The PC sleeps and streaming stops: A phone-side wake lock does not prevent the computer itself from sleeping.
Should you keep or reinstall it?
| Situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| Downloaded from the official source, no detection, occasional use | Keeping it may be reasonable if you accept the unsigned installer and virtual driver; use the official updates and ordinary security precautions. |
| Downloaded from an unofficial mirror, imitation site or modified package | Do not run or reinstall it. Quarantine the file, remove the product if installed, and scan the computer. |
| Repeated, consistent Trojan or CoinMiner detections from reputable engines | Do not reinstall until the exact file and alert have been independently resolved. |
| Work, government, financial or otherwise sensitive computer | Follow the organization’s security policy; a physical or platform-native microphone may avoid an unapproved third-party driver. |
| You need a microphone only for occasional calls | A headset or USB microphone may be simpler than maintaining a phone app, network connection and virtual driver. |
Judge the exact file, its source, the detection’s quality and any unexpected behavior—not merely the product name. A phone scan does not clear the Windows components, and timing alone does not prove that a later account problem was caused by WO Mic.
Alternatives if you would rather not use WO Mic
- Built-in phone-to-PC or webcam microphone features: Prefer a platform-native option when it meets your needs and avoids installing a third-party virtual driver.
- Audio-routing or camera software: Tools such as AudioRelay or DroidCam may suit some setups, but their current security, support and distribution should be checked directly; their names alone do not make them safer.
- USB microphone or headset: Avoids phone-to-PC network streaming and the WO Mic driver. It costs extra hardware and is less portable than a phone.
- USB audio interface: Useful for regular recording or streaming when a basic headset is not sufficient, but adds equipment and setup.
For a basic Wi-Fi setup, the developer’s tutorial says to connect the phone and PC to the same router, set the phone app’s Transport to Wi-Fi and start its server, then open the Windows client and select Connection → Connect…. Choose Wi-Fi, enter the phone’s IP address, and select WO Mic Device as the microphone in the target app. The product overview specifies 48,000 Hz, mono, 16-bit PCM; the FAQ says only one phone connection can be active at a time and that Linux is no longer supported, although a Linux page remains available. See the official tutorial, FAQ and Linux page.
