Apple Pay: Features, Updates, Supported Countries and How to Use It

Apple Pay works with eligible cards on supported Apple devices, but availability varies by country, issuer, merchant and feature. Here’s what it does and how to use it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Pay lets you pay with eligible cards stored in Apple Wallet, using a supported iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac or Apple Vision Pro. It works at compatible contactless terminals and participating app and web checkouts. Whether a particular card or feature works depends on your country, issuer, device, software and the merchant. Apple said in January 2026 that Apple Pay was available in 89 markets; check its live availability list and your issuer’s card list before relying on it.

Apple Pay and Apple Wallet are related, but not the same

Apple Pay is the payment service that lets you use eligible cards on supported Apple devices. Apple Wallet is the app that holds those cards and other items, such as tickets, passes, keys, IDs and transit credentials. A Wallet item is not automatically an Apple Pay payment card.

Service or feature What it does Availability distinction
Apple Pay Uses eligible cards for in-store, in-app and web payments. Requires a supported country, issuer, card, device and merchant.
Apple Cash A Wallet service for sending, receiving and spending money. Apple lists it only in the United States.
Apple Card A separate credit-card product that can be used with Apple Pay. U.S.-only and subject to credit approval; it is not required to use Apple Pay.
Tap to Pay on iPhone Lets participating merchants accept contactless payments using a supported iPhone app, without a separate terminal. Merchant, payment-provider and market support vary.
Apple Pay Later Apple’s former installment-loan product, launched in the U.S. in 2023. Apple discontinued new loans in 2024; current installment offers may instead come from participating banks or providers.

Apple says Apple Inc. and Apple Payments Services LLC are not banks. The bank or other provider behind a card or payment account remains responsible for matters such as eligibility and approval. See Apple’s Apple Pay overview and U.S. terms.

What you can do with Apple Pay

Pay at contactless terminals

Use Apple Pay at a store, restaurant, taxi or other location when its terminal accepts contactless payments and the merchant accepts the relevant card network. Contactless capability alone does not guarantee that a particular card or transaction will be accepted.

Pay in apps and on websites

In participating apps and App Clips, or at participating websites in Safari, choose Apple Pay, review the card and delivery or contact details, then authenticate. Apple’s current iPhone guide also describes checkout in supported third-party browsers on Mac, Windows and other devices: choose Apple Pay, scan the displayed code with an iPhone, review the payment on the iPhone and authenticate there. That flow depends on market, merchant, browser and device; it does not give a Windows computer a native Apple Wallet.

Choose among cards

You can add multiple eligible cards to Wallet, select a different card at checkout and set a default card. This does not make an unsupported card usable: the issuer must support Apple Pay for that specific card.

Use rewards or installment offers when shown

On eligible transactions, a participating card or provider may present rewards redemption or a pay-over-time option. Rewards depend on the card, program, market and merchant. Installments are credit products offered by the bank or provider, with their own eligibility checks, fees, interest and repayment terms; Apple Pay does not guarantee approval or set those terms.

Track some orders and review future payments

Participating merchants can add order information to Wallet. On supported configurations, Apple Intelligence and Siri can use eligible merchant or carrier emails to update tracking. On supported iPhones, review certain future or recurring charges at Wallet → More (…) → Preauthorized Payments. Revoking an authorization does not necessarily cancel the underlying subscription or service; cancel directly with the merchant.

Pay from Apple Watch

Apple Watch has its own Wallet payment experience, so you present the watch at the reader rather than holding your iPhone there. You do not need Apple Watch to use Apple Pay, and the cards and capabilities available still depend on issuer and regional support.

What changed recently

iOS 26 brought partner-based rewards and installments to some in-store checkouts

Apple announced an expansion of rewards redemption and installment choices to some in-store Apple Pay purchases with iOS 26. At launch, Apple named Affirm, Cash App Afterpay, Klarna, Synchrony and U.S. Bank for installment-related options in the United States; Monzo and Klarna in the United Kingdom; and Klarna in Canada. In-store rewards were initially announced with Synchrony and U.S. Bank in the United States. These are partner announcements, not a promise that every customer, card or purchase qualifies. See Apple’s services update and iOS 26 announcement.

Apple described a refreshed Wallet and Apple Pay presentation

In June 2026, Apple described an updated Apple Pay design intended to make it easier to move between cards and see information such as rewards balances, debit-account balances and available pay-later options for eligible cards. Availability depends on device, issuer and region; details are in Apple’s June 2026 services announcement.

Tap to Pay on iPhone has expanded, but it is for accepting payments

Apple reported in January 2026 that Tap to Pay on iPhone had expanded to 50 markets and was being used by more than 15 million merchants. Those figures are Apple’s report, not a guarantee that a provider is available to every business. Merchants should check Apple’s current market and provider list and planning information. This is a way for businesses to accept contactless payments, not a separate way for consumers to pay with Apple Pay.

Apple Pay Later is no longer the current Apple installment offer

Apple introduced Apple Pay Later as four interest-free payments over six weeks for eligible U.S. purchases in 2023, then stopped issuing new loans in 2024. Apple’s launch announcement is here; the discontinuation was reported by the Associated Press and Axios. Current offers should be understood as products from participating banks or other providers, not as Apple Pay Later.

Where Apple Pay works—and what availability means

Apple’s January 2026 services update reported availability in 89 markets with more than 11,000 bank and network partners. Because markets, issuers and features change, use Apple’s feature-availability directory and country support page for the current list. Apple’s market figure is from January 2026; it is not a live count of which specific cards work for you.

  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

Check these conditions separately:

  • Country or region: Apple Pay must be available where you and the relevant transaction are located.
  • Issuer and card: A bank may participate without supporting every card it issues. The issuer can also require verification or restrict a transaction type.
  • Payment network and merchant: Both must accept the transaction. A card that works at a terminal may not work for a particular app, website or recurring payment.
  • Device and software: The model and operating-system version must support the payment method and feature you want.
  • Feature-specific rules: Apple Cash, Apple Card, transit, rewards, installments, IDs and order tracking have narrower regional or partner availability than Apple Pay itself.

Apple Pay is built into supported iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro devices. Exact compatibility varies by feature, model and software; Apple recommends current software. Setup and some functions require internet or cellular access, and Apple’s U.S. terms specify that card use is generally limited to users aged 13 or older, subject to local, issuer, merchant and account restrictions. That age threshold is not a universal worldwide rule.

How to set up and use Apple Pay

Add a card on iPhone

  1. Open Wallet.
  2. Tap the + button and choose a card type.
  3. Follow the prompts to enter or scan the card details.
  4. Complete the issuer’s verification process. The card should appear in Wallet once approved.
  5. If offered, add the card to other eligible Apple devices.

Apple’s setup overview also describes adding a card by tapping the back of an eligible iPhone with the card. If setup fails, the issuer—not just Apple—may need to approve the card.

Pay in a store with iPhone

  1. On a Face ID iPhone, double-click the side button.
  2. Authenticate with Face ID or the passcode.
  3. Hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader.
  4. Wait for the checkmark and “Done.”

On a Touch ID iPhone, authenticate with Touch ID or the passcode as applicable. For current instructions, see Apple’s in-store payment guide.

Pay in an app or on the web

  1. Select the Apple Pay button.
  2. Review the card, billing and shipping addresses, and contact information.
  3. Select another card or any eligible rewards or installment option shown.
  4. Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, then confirm.

In a supported third-party browser flow, scan the checkout code with your iPhone and review and authenticate the payment on that iPhone.

Security and privacy: useful protections, not a guarantee

Apple describes device-based authentication and a device-specific payment credential in its Apple Pay security overview. In general, merchants do not receive the physical card number in the same form used for an ordinary card transaction. Authentication and tokenized credentials can reduce exposure of card details, but they do not prevent every fraud, issuer decline, chargeback or merchant dispute.

  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

A compromised Apple Account, stolen passcode, fraudulent card provisioning or social-engineering attack can still create risk. The issuer, merchant, payment network, device and applicable law all affect what data is processed and what protections or dispute rights apply.

Fix common Apple Pay problems

Wallet will not add the card

First confirm that the country and the specific card are supported. Then update the device software, check that billing details match the issuer’s records, and complete any bank verification prompt. A replaced, frozen, expired or restricted card—or a bank block on digital-wallet provisioning—can also prevent setup. If the problem remains, contact the issuer because it controls card eligibility and approval. Apple’s support guide and Apple Pay page provide the relevant starting points.

The terminal does not respond

  • Look for contactless acceptance and confirm the merchant accepts your card network.
  • Hold the top of the iPhone near the reader’s NFC area and give it a moment to respond.
  • Try a different eligible card if available.
  • If the reader is offline, malfunctioning or not configured for contactless, use another payment method.

The payment is declined

Apple Pay provides the payment credential and authentication; it does not approve the charge. The issuer, card status, available credit, fraud controls, payment network, merchant or terminal can decline it. Contact the issuer for a card-specific decline.

It works in stores but not online

The app or website may not offer Apple Pay, or the issuer, browser, market, merchant or card may not support that online transaction type. Shipping details, recurring-payment rules or merchant restrictions can also matter. In-store acceptance does not establish online acceptance.

You lost an iPhone or Apple Watch

Use Apple’s lost-device controls to mark the device lost or remove its payment cards, and contact your card issuer promptly if you suspect fraud. If you see an unauthorized transaction, follow the issuer’s reporting and dispute process.

You need a refund or want to stop a recurring charge

Refund procedures vary by merchant; keep the receipt and ask whether the same device or payment credential is needed. For a recurring payment, revoking its authorization in Wallet does not necessarily cancel the subscription. Cancel the service with the merchant directly.

Using Apple Pay while traveling

Apple Pay may work abroad when your card, issuer, payment network, merchant terminal and the local contactless system support the transaction. Your card issuer sets foreign-exchange fees, and a country’s Apple Pay listing does not guarantee acceptance at every merchant. Transit, identity and other Wallet features are particularly region-specific, so keep a physical card or another backup available.

When Apple Pay is a good fit

It is most useful if you already own a compatible Apple device, have a supported card and regularly shop at contactless terminals or participating online checkouts. Apple Watch can be convenient when you want to pay without reaching for your phone. It is less useful if your issuer or country is unsupported, you need a broadly accepted fallback, or you depend on a feature—such as Apple Cash, rewards or installments—that is unavailable to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compared with a physical card, Apple Pay puts multiple eligible cards on a device and adds device authentication, but a dead battery, damaged or locked device, or incompatible terminal can get in the way. Some merchants may still ask for a physical card for a refund, identity or age check, or other verification. Google Pay is generally the natural wallet option for Android users, and Samsung Wallet may suit Samsung-device owners; bank support, transit, IDs, rewards and online acceptance vary by country. No one option is universally better, so keep a backup payment method.
