Windows’ power settings can prioritize battery life over performance. If you want to check whether that trade-off is affecting your PC, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and choose a mode suited to how you’re using it. This quick adjustment may help in some cases, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a slow computer—and it does not by itself prove Windows is throttling your PC.
How to change Windows 11 Power mode
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, select Best power efficiency, Balanced or Best performance.
Microsoft describes Power mode as a way to choose between “better battery life, better performance, or a balanced experience.” The available controls and labels can vary with Windows version, device hardware, manufacturer and power configuration. If the setting cannot be changed
A custom power plan can prevent changing Power mode. Microsoft directs users to Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options and suggests selecting Balanced. Check Microsoft’s instructions if the option is unavailable.
Which Power mode should you use?

The use-case recommendations in the final column are the article author’s guidance, not a Microsoft rule. Microsoft advises choosing a mode that fits the activity and power situation. On a laptop, Best performance can drain the battery faster; Microsoft’s performance tips also warn that the device may get warm.

Review Energy Saver separately
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver. Depending on the device, you may be able to set a battery threshold for activation or turn on Always use energy saver. Energy Saver manages system processes and power use to balance performance with longer battery life; it is a power-saving feature, not evidence of a fault. Its controls can differ by device. Will changing the setting fix a slow PC?
It might improve responsiveness if the current power configuration is limiting performance for the task at hand. But Microsoft does not promise a specific speed increase, and the cited guidance provides no guaranteed performance-gain figure. A sluggish PC can have causes that a power-mode change will not address; the setting alone cannot diagnose them or establish that the computer is being throttled.

For that reason, check Windows’ built-in power controls before trying undocumented processor tweaks. If changing modes makes no difference, do not assume that repeatedly switching them will resolve the underlying issue.
