That means their content is encrypted on the sender’s device and decrypted at the recipient’s endpoint, so WhatsApp says it cannot read or hear them in transit. But encryption does not hide all account and technical information, protect content after a recipient receives it, or make every WhatsApp feature private in the same way.
What end-to-end encryption means on WhatsApp
For ordinary personal chats and calls, WhatsApp says content is protected between the people communicating. The same protection, according to WhatsApp, applies to status updates and shared location. The company describes the content as accessible to the people in the conversation, not WhatsApp or Meta. This is WhatsApp’s description of its service, not an independent audit finding. Encryption is automatic for personal messages and calls; there is no separate switch to enable for an ordinary chat. Participants can compare a chat’s QR code or 60-digit security code to check the encryption identity associated with that conversation. WhatsApp also describes an automatic key-transparency process. Checking a code does not conceal account information or stop the other participant from sharing content.
What WhatsApp and Meta can still learn
End-to-end encryption protects message content in transit; it does not mean WhatsApp collects no information. WhatsApp lists categories including a phone number and profile details users provide, contacts, group and community membership, settings, support interactions, and technical details about service use, device, internet connection, and general location such as country. WhatsApp says this information is not end-to-end encrypted and can be visible to the service. These are categories and examples, not a claim that every item is collected from every user. WhatsApp’s privacy overview says: “This information is not ‘end-to-end encrypted’, which means we are able to see it.”

WhatsApp also says information may be shared with service providers and, in specified contexts, other Meta companies. It may disclose information to law enforcement or public authorities in response to valid legal requests. Encryption limits access to protected message content; it does not prevent disclosure of information the service holds outside that protection.
What other people in WhatsApp can see
Privacy settings affect what other users can learn. Depending on those settings, someone with your phone number may see your profile photo, About information, last-seen status, or read receipts. Group membership can reveal information to other participants; WhatsApp says people added to a group can see one another’s phone numbers.

The recipient is an endpoint, not an intermediary encryption can control. A person who can view a message may screenshot, record, copy, forward, or otherwise share it. Disappearing messages and view-once media may limit ordinary in-app retention, but cannot guarantee that someone will not capture what appears on their device. WhatsApp warns recipients may share content onward. WhatsApp’s safety information covers this risk.

Can someone learn your IP address from a WhatsApp call?
WhatsApp offers a Protect IP address in calls setting at Settings > Privacy > Advanced. When enabled, calls are relayed through WhatsApp’s servers so the other caller does not learn your IP address through a direct connection. WhatsApp says group calls are already relayed by default; relaying may reduce call quality, while calls remain end-to-end encrypted. This protects against disclosure to the other caller through a direct call connection—it is not a claim that WhatsApp itself cannot see network information. WhatsApp’s call-relay explanation states: “Calls relayed through WhatsApp servers are end-to-end encrypted, like all calls on WhatsApp.”

Practical steps to protect your account and privacy
- Use the official app and keep it updated. WhatsApp warns that fake versions pose privacy and security risks. Its safety guidance explains the risk.
- Enable two-step verification and never share the verification PIN.
- Review privacy and group controls. Limit who can see profile details or add you to groups, and consider who is already in each group.
- Check linked devices if account access seems unusual. Block or report unwanted contacts, and use WhatsApp’s account-recovery guidance if you lose access. See WhatsApp’s safety guidance.
- Compare security codes with a contact when confirming the chat identity matters to you. The code check does not hide metadata or control what the recipient does.
- Consider Protect IP address in calls if you want to prevent the other caller from learning your IP through a direct connection, bearing in mind possible call-quality reduction.
- Inspect backup options before backing up chats. Defaults and available settings can vary; verify the current app and platform rather than relying on a general privacy statement.
- Choose recipients carefully. Content sent to an AI, agent, business, or group is available to that destination and its authorized participants under the applicable handling arrangement.
