Vivaldi offers configurable tracker blocking and optional encrypted Sync, but it is not a no-data browser and cannot make you anonymous. Vivaldi’s policy describes a daily telemetry message and Sync metadata, while its built-in safeguards—such as tracker blocking and Google Safe Browsing—have defined limits. Here is what those features do, what information Vivaldi says it handles, and which settings are worth reviewing.
What data does Vivaldi collect?
Vivaldi’s Browser Privacy Policy says each installation profile receives a unique ID stored on the device. Every 24 hours, the browser sends an HTTPS message to Vivaldi’s servers in Iceland containing that ID, the browser version, CPU architecture, screen resolution, and time since the previous message. This is telemetry, so describing Vivaldi as collecting no data would be inaccurate.

The policy also describes information associated with particular features. Vivaldi says its built-in password manager uses operating-system password storage frameworks, with encryption where the framework supports it. Crash reporting is a separate setting: the policy says a detailed crash log may include personal data present in relevant memory sections, and that Vivaldi processes the received data to extract a stack trace. These are Vivaldi’s disclosures about its practices, not an independent network audit.

Vivaldi also says some default bookmarks are partner sites and that it receives shared revenue from those partners. The company says bookmark choices are intended to be useful regardless of revenue.

How strong is Vivaldi’s tracker and ad blocking?
Vivaldi’s desktop Privacy and Security Settings document three global blocking levels: no blocking, blocking trackers, or blocking trackers and ads. You can set exceptions for individual sites, manage the rule sources, and view blocked trackers. Lists can also hide cookie-warning banners. These controls let you choose a level of protection, but the documented features do not establish a measured blocking rate or guarantee that every tracker will be stopped.
Vivaldi says its tracker protection blocks known tracking sites. In its security FAQ, the company explains that some third-party privacy tests emphasize different methods and may not reflect its list-based approach. That is Vivaldi’s explanation of those tests, not independent validation of its blocker or proof that a particular result is wrong. Blocking also depends on your selected level and the lists you have enabled.
Change the blocking level or make a site exception
In Vivaldi for desktop, open Settings > Privacy and Security and choose the global blocking level. To handle a specific site differently, use its per-site privacy controls or add an exception in the settings. If a site stops working, first check whether its exception or a blocking list resolves the issue; disabling protection globally is broader than necessary.

What does Vivaldi Sync encrypt?
Sync is optional. Vivaldi says the browser encrypts each synced data item before it is sent to servers in Iceland, then decrypts retrieved items in the browser using the user’s key. That describes encrypted synced content; it does not mean the service retains no information about Sync.
Vivaldi’s policy lists metadata used to manage the service, including account association, Sync connection times, encryption information, item type, deletion status, parent relationships, client identifier, and creation and modification times. The policy therefore supports a distinction between encrypted content and retained service metadata, rather than a broader claim that Vivaldi learns nothing.

What do Safe Browsing and other privacy settings do?
Vivaldi’s desktop settings documentation says Google Safe Browsing is enabled by default. Vivaldi says the browser receives a file describing known malicious URLs through an approximation method, rather than sending the service provider a list of sites you visit. This warning system can help identify known phishing and malware sites; a site without a warning is not thereby proven safe.
- Do Not Track: Vivaldi can send a request asking sites not to track you, but a site can ignore it.
- WebRTC IP broadcasting: Vivaldi documents this as enabled by default on desktop. Disabling it may improve privacy for some VPN users, but can interfere with site functions.
Vivaldi’s Android help documents additional controls, including secure DNS, HTTPS-only behavior, locking private tabs when leaving the browser, and clearing data on exit. Its Android privacy settings guide lists DNS provider choices. These controls are platform-specific; do not assume every Android, desktop, or other mobile version has identical options.

Does Vivaldi keep you safe from threats?
Vivaldi says it reviews its code and tracks Chromium security fixes through Chromium Extended Stable. The company says it aims to include applicable patches promptly, including relevant out-of-schedule fixes. As a result, Vivaldi’s Chromium version number may differ from Chromium Stable without necessarily showing whether a particular security fix is missing. These are vendor-stated practices, not an independent audit or a guarantee about the release installed on your device.
Keep the browser updated and check the release you actually run rather than judging security from a version-number comparison alone. Safe Browsing and tracker blocking address particular risks; they do not replace updates, cautious handling of downloads and links, or good account security.

Which Vivaldi settings should you review?
- Choose your blocker level: In desktop Settings > Privacy and Security, select no blocking, tracker blocking, or tracker-and-ad blocking. Review site exceptions and rule sources if a site behaves unexpectedly.
- Decide whether to enable Sync: Turn it on only if you want the selected browser data available across devices. Consider both the encrypted item contents and the metadata Vivaldi says it retains to operate the service.
- Review privacy and safety controls: Check Safe Browsing, Do Not Track, and—on desktop—WebRTC IP broadcasting. For Android, review the separate privacy controls for DNS, HTTPS-only mode, private-tab locking, and clearing data on exit.
- Check crash-reporting preferences and updates: Crash-log sharing is distinct from routine browser telemetry. Install available updates and confirm the version on your own device.
