There is no evidence-based universal winner. Choose Switch 2 if you want a console version for portable play, Steam Deck if you want handheld access to your Steam library, or PC if you prefer desktop play and want to match the game to your own hardware. Official sources confirm those options and list PC requirements, but do not provide comparable performance tests across all three.
What is the difference between the three options?

Iron Gate’s platform FAQ lists Windows, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Steam listing describes Valheim as a 1–10 player game.

Is one version faster or better-looking?
The available official information does not establish a fair performance ranking among Switch 2, PC, and Steam Deck. It does not publish matched frame rates, resolutions, battery-life results, or tests in demanding situations such as large bases. A PC’s listed requirements are not a performance guarantee, and a patch fixing a graphics issue is not a three-way benchmark.

Will Valheim run on your PC?
Valve’s Steam listing, accessed October 4, 2026, gives these Windows requirements. They are the published minimum and recommended specifications, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image quality.

Check your PC against the Steam system requirements before choosing it. The figures above are for Windows; they do not establish equivalent requirements or performance for Switch 2 or Steam Deck.

Can you play with friends on other platforms?
Iron Gate’s Valheim 1.0 FAQ says, “Yes, Valheim will support crossplay between all platforms.” A September 11, 2026 hotfix notice documented a temporary Switch 2 patch delay and said all platforms should be compatible for crossplay again after the update. Crossplay is supported, but a temporary version mismatch can affect compatibility while updates roll out; check that everyone is on compatible current versions if joining fails.

Do not assume progress automatically follows you between these devices. The 1.0 FAQ says Xbox saves can be accessed from PC when the PC copy is launched through the Microsoft Store. It says there is no cross-platform save-file sync beyond that. Steam Deck plays the Steam version, but the FAQ does not establish a transfer path between Steam and Switch 2.

Does mod support make PC the better choice?
Not as an official feature: Iron Gate says Valheim has no official mod support. Its 1.0 FAQ also says there will be no console mod support for 1.0 and no Steam Workshop feature. Unofficial mods are not guaranteed to work on a particular game build or platform, so do not choose a version on the assumption that a specific mod will be supported.

- Choose Switch 2 if you want a console version and portable play without making your Steam library the deciding factor.
- Choose Steam Deck if handheld play matters and you want to play the Steam version.
- Choose PC if you prefer a desktop setup and your hardware meets the published requirements.
If playing with friends across platforms is essential, the official FAQ supports crossplay; if moving the same save between devices is essential, the stated save policy is a more important constraint. Neither preference changes the lack of published apples-to-apples performance data.
