To help a walkie-talkie battery last longer, follow the charging and storage instructions for your exact radio and battery. Charge time, compatible equipment and care rules vary by model and battery chemistry. For example, Motorola’s T600/T605 manual gives specific instructions for its included NiMH pack; those figures are not universal.
Start with your radio’s manual
Check the model name and battery type, then use the manual to confirm charge duration and compatible charger or power supply. Motorola’s consumer-radio guide page lists manuals by series. Instructions can differ even within one manufacturer: the T600/T605 uses a NiMH pack, while Motorola’s CLP guide gives different charge estimates for Li-ion batteries and different chargers.

These are manufacturer estimates for the named battery and charger combinations, not a general walkie-talkie charging schedule. Do not apply the T600/T605’s eight-hour guidance to another radio.
Charge the Motorola T600/T605 NiMH pack correctly
Turn the radio off and allow it to recover
The T600/T605 manual recommends switching the radio off while charging. If a deeply depleted pack is still charging, leaving the radio on may prevent transmission until it has recovered enough power. Wait for the battery meter to reach one bar before trying to transmit.

Let a temperature-shifted battery acclimate
After moving the T600/T605 NiMH pack between hot and cold conditions, do not charge it immediately. Let it acclimate first; Motorola says this usually takes about 20 minutes. This is guidance for that pack, so check the relevant manual for another model.
Take it off the charger and store it disconnected
For optimal battery life, Motorola says to remove the T600/T605 from its charger within 16 hours. Do not store the radio while it is connected to the charger. This is a model-specific instruction, not a universal overnight-charging cutoff.

Store an unused T600/T605 battery
For the T600/T605 NiMH pack, Motorola advises charging an unused battery once every three months. Remove the batteries before storing the radio. Store the battery between -20°C and 35°C in low humidity, away from damp conditions and corrosive materials. These limits and intervals come from the T600/T605 user guide; follow your own model’s instructions if they differ.
Replace a battery or charger only with a compatible one
If a pack needs replacing, check compatibility against the exact radio model before buying. Motorola identifies an 800 mAh NiMH pack as a spare power source for compatible consumer radios, and its T600 Series product page confirms that the T600 series includes 800 mAh NiMH packs. That does not establish fit for every Motorola radio, much less every walkie-talkie.

A replacement charger or cradle is another option if the original is missing or damaged. Match it to the radio’s model and the charging setup described in its manual; do not assume a charger is universal just because its connector appears to fit.
