Secretly using an assistant to generate or feed you answers is usually ethically misleading and may violate the rules. Use AI to prepare beforehand; during the interview, ask first if the policy is unclear. If you need assistive technology for accessibility, request an accommodation rather than hiding its use.
Can you use AI during a live job interview?
Only if the employer permits it. Several employers and public bodies explicitly prohibit AI assistance during interviews or assessments unless they say otherwise. For example, College Board’s careers FAQ says live interviews should be completed without AI-assistance tools, while PNC’s candidate guidance says candidates should not use AI to generate or assist with live answers unless explicitly told otherwise.

These are organization-specific rules, not a universal law. The Canadian Public Service Commission says employers may allow AI during hiring, particularly when using it is relevant to the work, and recommends identifying which tools and stages are permitted. In practice, read the invitation and assessment instructions, then ask the recruiter if they do not answer the question.

An interview may be designed to assess your own judgment, communication, knowledge, or ability to do the work. If an AI assistant supplies a substantive answer that you present as your own, the interviewer may form a false impression of your skills and experience. This is an ethical concern reflected in employers’ stated goals: the College Board says it wants candidates’ authentic perspectives, and the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) says assessment outcomes should accurately reflect candidates’ own skills, experience, and judgment.

The answer can differ when AI use is expressly allowed and is part of what the assessment is intended to evaluate. In that case, stay within the stated criteria and disclose or demonstrate the tool’s use as requested.
Preparation is different from real-time interview help
Using AI before the interview to rehearse, research the organization, or organize examples is treated differently from having it create answers during an assessment. SRA, Civil Service Careers, and PNC allow or encourage preparation uses. Civil Service Careers specifically says not to use AI to create answers for live or pre-recorded interview questions or situation-based questions.

- Reasonable preparation: Ask AI to generate practice questions, help you research public information about the employer, or help you improve the clarity of a draft grounded in your own experience.
- Risky or prohibited assessment use: Have AI invent or compose an answer to a question being asked in the interview, or secretly feed you responses when the employer expects unaided performance.
Keep prepared answers truthful and specific to your experience. You should be able to explain and defend the examples and views you present without relying on a live assistant.

What to do when the rules are unclear
- Read the interview invitation, assessment instructions, and any candidate AI policy. Check whether the rule applies to the interview, a written exercise, a pre-recorded response, or another stage.
- If AI is explicitly allowed, use only the tools and functions permitted, and disclose or demonstrate use as requested.
- If the instructions prohibit AI, do not use it during that assessment.
- If the instructions are silent or ambiguous, ask the recruiter before the interview. Until you receive clarification, answer without real-time AI assistance.
- Use AI beforehand for practice and preparation, while keeping your examples and claims grounded in your own experience.
Accessibility and assistive technology
Accessibility support is not the same as covertly generating answers. In the United States, EEOC guidance on artificial intelligence and the ADA says reasonable accommodation can apply to applicants and that employers may need to adjust processes involving AI or algorithmic decision tools. It discusses alternatives when an AI assessment may not accurately evaluate a person with a visual disability. This guidance does not decide whether a particular conversational assistant must be allowed during a live interview.

In the UK, Acas guidance on interview adjustments says employers must ask candidates whether they need reasonable adjustments and notes reliable communication technology as a consideration for online interviews. If you need a tool to access the interview, explain the functional barrier and ask the employer what adjustment is available.

An AI assistant may listen to, record, or transcribe interview audio. Do not assume that you may secretly record just because an app can do it. Acas guidance says UK employers who need to record an interview should first get the person’s permission and should store recordings or notes securely and confidentially under data-protection rules.

The U.S. Department of Labor material is an internal agency policy: in its covered context, it bars secret recording or monitoring and requires notification and agreement for recordings. It is not a recording law for every U.S. job interview. Recording and privacy requirements vary by location and employer; ask permission and check the applicable rules before recording or processing someone else’s voice.
