Most conventional thermal pastes are electrically insulating, but not every thermal interface material is. Liquid-metal compounds conduct electricity and can cause a short if they spill onto circuitry. Check the exact product’s manufacturer specifications before applying it.
Why thermal conductivity does not mean electrical conductivity
Thermal conductivity describes how readily a material transfers heat; electrical conductivity describes how readily it carries electric current. A paste can move heat between a processor and its cooler while resisting electrical current. For example, ARCTIC says its thermal paste is neither electrically conductive nor capacitive, and silicone-based thermally conductive paste described by Artur Glöckler is electrically nonconductive.

Those statements apply to the specified products, not every compound sold as thermal paste. The word “paste” does not tell you what is in the formula or how it behaves electrically.

| Material type | Electrical behavior | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional non-metallic or silicone-based paste | Often electrically insulating; check the exact product specifications. ARCTIC and Artur Glöckler describe particular products as nonconductive. | Do not assume that a product is safe to spill based on its category alone; follow its application instructions. |
| Metal-based thermal interface material | Some are electrically conductive; others with low electrical conductivity may still not be completely electrically inert, according to AMD. | Confirm the product’s electrical properties rather than relying on the word “metal-based.” |
| Liquid-metal compound | Conductive. Thermal Grizzly identifies Conductonaut as electrically conductive; Indium Corporation also warns that liquid metals conduct electricity. | A spill onto components or contacts can create electrical risks, including shorts. Check surface compatibility and device instructions before use. |
Why liquid metal needs extra care
Conductive liquid metal can cause problems if it reaches areas that should remain electrically isolated. Intel warns that liquid-metal contact with areas such as capacitors on a processor package may cause immediate issues or failure, or lead to performance degradation or system instability over time. ASUS and Alphacool also warn of short-circuit risks if liquid metal contacts electronics. Intel Support Knowledge Base, in guidance last reviewed August 20, 2024, states: “LMTIM is an electrically conductive material, so improper use can potentially cause system failure.”
#1 Best Overall
- WELL PROVEN QUALITY: The design of our thermal paste packagings has changed several times, the formula of the composition has remained unchanged, so our MX pastes have stood for high quality
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- 100 % ORIGINAL THROUGH AUTHENTICITY CHECK: Through our Authenticity Check, it is possible to verify the authenticity of every single product
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners, Spatula incl.
Check cooler compatibility
Thermal Grizzly says not to use Conductonaut with aluminum coolers and recommends nickel-plated surfaces for long-term stability. These are product-specific compatibility instructions, not universal rules for every thermal compound.
Follow the device maker’s instructions
Application requirements vary by device. ASUS advises users not to disassemble the thermal module themselves for the notebook models covered by its support article. Intel notes that liquid-metal use can affect warranty coverage for Intel boxed processors and that improper application can cause system failure. Neither warning should be generalized to all devices or warranties; check the guidance for your exact hardware.

- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
How to check a thermal compound before using it
- Identify the exact product. Do not infer electrical behavior from the terms “thermal paste” or “thermal compound.”
- Read the manufacturer’s technical data sheet and warnings. Look for explicit statements about electrical conductivity, insulation, or whether the material is electrically inert.
- Check the cooler and device requirements. Confirm surface compatibility and follow the computer or processor maker’s instructions for your model.
- Treat liquid metal as conductive. Do not apply it as though it were ordinary paste; use it only where the product and device instructions support its use.
What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
There is no useful category-wide percentage for how many thermal pastes conduct electricity: behavior depends on formulation. Product specifications should be read as applying to the named product and can change over time. For a specific compound, its manufacturer’s current documentation is the relevant source.
