Yes, real infrared apps exist, but the word “infrared” covers two different things. The best-known kind is a thermal imaging app, such as the official FLIR and Seek apps. These apps display heat patterns and temperature readings, but only when a compatible thermal camera is connected to your phone. Installing the app by itself does not give your phone a thermal sensor. The second kind is an infrared remote-control app, which depends on whether your phone has infrared transmitter hardware or can work with an external emitter. Those are separate questions, and the answer for each is different.
Two different meanings of “infrared app”
When people search for an infrared app, they usually mean one of two things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Thermal imaging: seeing surface temperature as a colored image, finding heat leaks, checking electrical panels, or locating hot and cold spots.
- Infrared remote control: sending the same kind of signal a TV remote uses to switch a television, air conditioner, or set-top box on or off.
The two uses rely on different hardware. A thermal app reads heat through a sensor, while a remote-control app sends infrared pulses through an emitter. The table below sets out the practical differences.
| Question | Thermal imaging app | Infrared remote-control app |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Displays and analyzes heat patterns and temperature readings | Transmits remote-control commands to compatible devices |
| Extra hardware needed? | Yes. A compatible thermal camera must be connected to the phone (FLIR and Seek apps as documented) | Depends on the phone. The phone needs suitable infrared emitter hardware, or you need a compatible external device |
| Can the app alone do the job? | No, for the live thermal view | Only if the phone has the hardware. Not established for every phone model |
| What to check first | Camera model, phone, operating system, and connector | Your phone’s specifications for an infrared emitter |
Thermal imaging apps need a camera
The official thermal apps from FLIR and Seek are real and useful, but they are interfaces for hardware. Each one needs a separate thermal camera that connects to your phone.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Infrared remote-control apps depend on your phone
An app can only send infrared remote commands if the phone has an infrared transmitter, or if you pair the app with an external infrared emitter that connects to the phone. Whether a particular phone has built-in infrared hardware depends on the model, and this article cannot settle that for every brand or generation. Before you install a remote app or buy an accessory, open the manufacturer’s full specifications for your phone and look for infrared or IR transmitter listings. If the specifications do not mention infrared, the app will not be able to send commands on its own.

Checklist before buying a thermal camera attachment
- Confirm that your exact camera model is supported by the app you plan to use.
- Check that the phone model, operating system version, and connector type match the camera’s requirements.
- Read the manufacturer’s current compatibility information, because supported devices and operating systems can change.
- Decide whether you need only spot temperature readings or a full thermal video view. Feature sets differ by camera line.
- Use the free app listing as a preview only. It will not produce a thermal image until the camera is connected.
Smartphone thermal camera attachments are sold through many retailers. The products named in this article are the FLIR ONE and Seek Nano, along with the Seek Compact line. Treat each one as a separate hardware purchase with its own compatibility check.

The Bottom Line
If you want to see heat, you need a thermal app plus a compatible thermal camera; the app alone shows only menus and settings. If you want to control a TV or air conditioner, the answer depends on whether your phone has infrared transmitter hardware, so check its specifications before installing anything.
