The SteelSeries Apex 3 is a full-size, wired gaming keyboard built around quiet rubber-dome (membrane) switches, not mechanical switches. It is a sensible fit if you want a softer, quieter typing feel, a numpad, zone-based RGB, and a wrist rest. Its long key travel before actuation and relatively high latency make it a weaker choice for competitive players who prioritize fast response, while its soft, less distinct feedback may not suit typists who want a crisp tactile bump.
How does the Apex 3 feel and sound?
The Apex 3 uses rubber-dome switches, also commonly described as membrane switches. RTINGS describes the typing experience as decent and not fatiguing, but notes that some people may find the keys mushy and lacking distinct tactile feedback. That trade-off is central: the softer feel can be comfortable for everyday gaming and typing, but it does not provide the pronounced response of a more tactile keyboard.

Noise is low relative to many gaming keyboards, but “quiet” does not mean silent; sound depends on how you type and the surface beneath the board. SteelSeries Support says, “The switch was designed to lower acoustic vibrations to reduce noise, so it’s extremely quiet to use.” RTINGS also describes typing noise as minimal.
SteelSeries Support further claims its POM rubber-dome sheet offers “10x the durability that you typically find on gaming keyboards.” SteelSeries does not define the comparison baseline or test protocol on that page, so this is a manufacturer claim, not a verified lifespan or warranty estimate.
#1 Best Overall
- Ip32 water resistant – Prevents accidental damage from liquid spills
- 10-zone RGB illumination – Gorgeous color schemes and reactive effects
- Whisper quiet gaming switches – Nearly silent use for 20 million low friction keypresses
- Premium magnetic wrist rest – Provides full palm support and comfort
- Dedicated multimedia controls – Adjust volume and settings on the fly
What features does the full-size keyboard include?
- Full-size layout: The dedicated number pad is useful for data entry and games that use numpad controls, but takes more desk space than a compact board.
- Magnetic wrist rest: SteelSeries includes a detachable wrist rest that attaches magnetically.
- Media controls: A clickable roller and dedicated media keys provide playback and volume control without relying on keyboard shortcuts.
- Three-way cable routing: Built-in channels let the wired cable exit toward the left, center, or right to help manage desk routing.
- IP32 protection: SteelSeries advertises water and dust resistance. Treat this as protection against minor accidents, not as waterproofing or a guarantee against liquid damage.
How responsive is it for gaming?
RTINGS reports long pre-travel—the distance a key moves before registering—and fairly high latency for a wired keyboard. Those findings matter most in competitive games, where a fast, clearly defined response may be more valuable than quiet operation or a softer key press. The Apex 3 can still serve for general gaming, but players focused on responsiveness should compare keyboards with shorter pre-travel and lower measured latency.
What does the RGB lighting actually do?
The Apex 3 has zone-based RGB rather than individually customizable lighting for every key. TechRadar describes ten RGB zones on the full-size model; RTINGS confirms that individual-key lighting is unavailable. If you want per-key effects or detailed lighting assignments, this layout is a limitation.

Should you choose the Apex 3 or Apex 3 TKL?
The Apex 3 TKL keeps the same rubber-dome switch feel while removing the number pad and reducing the board’s footprint. The full-size model has a wrist rest and ten RGB zones; the TKL has eight RGB zones. Choose based on desk space and whether you use a numpad, rather than expecting a different typing experience.
| Feature | Apex 3 full-size | Apex 3 TKL |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Full-size, with numpad | Tenkeyless, without numpad |
| Switch feel | Rubber dome; RTINGS says typing feel is the same as the TKL | Rubber dome; RTINGS says typing feel is the same as the full-size Apex 3 |
| RGB zones | 10 zones, as described by TechRadar | 8 zones, according to RTINGS |
| Wrist rest | Included, magnetic | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| Desk footprint | Larger because it includes the numpad | More compact because it omits the numpad |
How does it compare with the Corsair K55 RGB?
RTINGS’ comparison highlights different priorities rather than a universal winner. It describes the Apex 3 as sturdier and requiring less operating force, while the K55 RGB offers better tactile feedback and substantially lower latency. The K55’s more distinct feedback may also fatigue fingers faster for some users. Favor the Apex 3 if a sturdier-feeling board and lighter press matter more; favor the K55 if tactile response and latency are the priority.
