But solo play is not the same as an offline, traditional Outlast campaign: the game is built around online Trials, objectives, and progression. It is most likely to suit you if you enjoy tense stealth-horror runs and learning through retries; it may disappoint if you want a self-contained linear story you can play offline.
Can you play The Outlast Trials alone?
Yes. Red Barrels’ official game description says, “Survive alongside friends, or dare to face the experiments alone.” In its March 2024 launch notes, the developer also said it adjusted difficulty, Trial structure, and progression to streamline onboarding for new and returning players, “including those playing solo or as a group.” Those are signs that solo is an intended way to play, not merely a workaround for an empty party.

That does not make the game offline. PlayStation’s listing says online play is required, even though its product details also list up to four online players. In other words, you can undertake Trials by yourself, but you should not buy it expecting an offline single-player mode.
What solo play feels like—and who it suits
Expect objective runs, not a conventional campaign
The core choice is less “alone or impossible” than “do I want this kind of game alone?” The Outlast Trials is organized around Trials and progression rather than a standalone, linear campaign in the familiar single-player sense. If you enjoy stealth, survival horror, completing objectives under pressure, and learning from attempts that go wrong, the format may work well solo.

If what you want is an authored story that unfolds at your pace without online requirements or repeatable objective runs, the format is likely a mismatch. That is an editorial fit assessment based on the game’s official structure, not a claim based on hands-on testing.
Solo has accommodations, but it remains dangerous
Red Barrels’ October 2023 patch notes documented solo-specific survival support, including Respawn Pills and a system of three chances per Trial. The notes said respawning restored 75% and that pills found in some Syringe Boxes and Secret Rooms could grant extra chances in solo mode. They described Respawn Pills as “extra chances allowing the player to go beyond the normal 3 respawns.”

Those details are a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of the current rules. The official Red Barrels page lists newer updates through September 2026, so mechanics may have changed; check the latest patch notes or in-game information before relying on specific respawn values. The broader takeaway is that the developer has documented solo-focused support, not that solo removes the danger or challenge.

Where should a solo beginner start?
Choose Program Genesis
For a cautious first run, Program Genesis is the clearest documented starting point. Red Barrels describes it as the straightforward campaign and main path to rebirth, with an intended difficulty range from Easy to Normal. That makes it a more sensible first stop than jumping into the harder programs.

In the developer’s release-era progression notes, Program X was characterized as Normal-to-Hard and Program Ultra as Hard-to-Very-Hard, with progression gates. Those descriptions may no longer reflect the current build, so use them as orientation rather than a promise about today’s progression or difficulty.

There is a fallback: Red Barrels’ October 2023 notes document a Group Finder with options for Any Trial, a selected Program, or a selected Trial. The same notes described expected waits as quick, moderate, and long, respectively, while warning that queue times vary by selection, region, time of day, and other factors. Because that documentation is from 2023, treat it as evidence of the documented system, not a guarantee of current queue times or availability; check the in-game Group Finder.

Red Barrels’ March 2024 launch notes also state that cross-play is supported across platforms. That can widen the pool of potential teammates if you decide to use matchmaking, though it does not guarantee a particular wait or match.
Is The Outlast Trials worth playing solo?
It is a reasonable pick if you want cooperative-style survival horror that you can face alone, are comfortable with online play, and enjoy repeated high-pressure objective runs. The official developer materials explicitly account for solo players, and the documented beginner route gives newcomers a straightforward place to begin.
Skip it if “solo” for you means offline, linear, story-first play. No published solo completion-rate or satisfaction figures establish how most solo players fare, so the decision comes down to whether Trials-based horror and learning through retries sound appealing to you.
