The current iPad mini has an 8.3-inch backlit display and Apple Books offers extensive text and page controls. It is not a dedicated e-ink reader, though, and official specifications do not establish that its screen is as comfortable as e-ink for every reader or provide a reading-specific battery-life figure.
What the iPad mini’s screen is like for reading
The current iPad mini uses an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display: an LED-backlit IPS Multi-Touch screen with a resolution of 2266 × 1488 pixels and a stated density of 326 pixels per inch. It supports P3 wide color and has True Tone, full lamination, an antireflective coating, and a maximum brightness of 500 nits. Apple measures the 8.3 inches diagonally across the rectangular display; the usable area is smaller because of the rounded corners. Apple’s technical specifications identify the current model as iPad mini with A17 Pro.

That combination makes the screen a small, sharp, color-capable tablet display—not an e-ink panel. Color is useful for comics, illustrated books, magazines, and other content where it matters. For ordinary text, the practical question is whether you like reading on a lit screen and can set its size and brightness comfortably.

Is it portable and comfortable to hold?
Apple lists the iPad mini at 195.4 × 134.8 × 6.3 mm. The Wi‑Fi model weighs 293 grams; the Wi‑Fi + Cellular model weighs 297 grams. Those dimensions make it compact by tablet standards, but they do not guarantee comfortable one-handed reading. Hand size, grip, posture, and how long you hold it all matter.
If you can, try holding a device of similar size and weight in your usual reading position before deciding. Consider whether you prefer to hold a reader, rest it on a surface, or use a stand; hands-free reading is a separate use case from carrying the tablet around.

How much can you adjust the reading experience?
Apple Books
In Apple Books, readers can adjust font and font size, boldness, line, character, and word spacing, margins, text columns, justification, and page background. The app also offers page-turn styles or vertical scrolling and an in-app brightness control. Screen and accessibility settings
iPadOS also supports manual or automatic brightness, Dark Mode, True Tone, and Night Shift. Night Shift shifts screen colors toward warmer tones on a schedule or when enabled manually. Accessibility settings include options such as enlarged text, Zoom, and color adjustments. These controls let you tailor the display, but they are not a guarantee against eye fatigue or proof that a backlit screen is equivalent to e-ink. Comfort varies with the reader, text size, brightness relative to the room, viewing distance, content, and duration. If reading causes discomfort, try changing the text size and display settings; persistent symptoms are a reason to seek professional advice rather than assume a particular screen is the cause.
Battery life: what Apple’s estimate does and doesn’t tell you
Apple estimates up to 10 hours of web surfing on Wi‑Fi or video playback, and up to 9 hours of web surfing over cellular on Wi‑Fi + Cellular models. These are manufacturer estimates for the named activities, not reading tests or guaranteed runtimes. Apple’s specifications do not give a reading-only battery figure, so they cannot establish how long a particular person’s iPad mini will last while reading.

When the iPad mini makes sense—and when to consider a dedicated reader
The choice is mainly about what else you want from the device and which reading experience you prefer. The available official specifications and guidance describe the iPad mini’s hardware and settings, but do not provide a controlled comfort comparison or like-for-like reading battery tests against a dedicated e-reader.
