The “enhance” effect is real as an image-processing technique: a neural network predicts plausible missing detail from patterns it learned. That makes the result useful for visualization, not proof of what a face, license plate, or other obscured feature actually looked like.
What is single-image super-resolution?
Single-image super-resolution takes one low-resolution image and generates a higher-resolution version. Unlike simply enlarging an image, which spreads existing pixels across a larger grid, a learned model estimates what finer detail might fit the image’s patterns.

Duke University’s Data Science Team described its 2018 system as a real-life approximation of the fictional “zoom and enhance” idea from CSI. The team trained it on 800 high-resolution images paired with 800 low-resolution counterparts. When given a new noisy, low-resolution image, the neural network predicts a cleaner, sharper image and fills in pixels mathematically. Those generated pixels are estimates; the system does not retrieve every original pixel or the light that a camera never recorded. Duke’s 2018 account of the project.

Duke showed a mountaineer image reconstructed at four times its starting resolution. The result had sharper edges, more realistic-looking textures, and fewer visible artifacts. That is a meaningful improvement in appearance, but “more realistic-looking” is not the same as verified recovery of the scene’s exact details.

The associated NTIRE 2018 challenge paper reports results across three single-image super-resolution tracks. The team placed second in Track 1, which used bicubic downsampling, and seventh in Track 2 (realistic adverse conditions) and Track 3 (realistic difficult). These rankings show strong performance in those challenge settings; they do not establish that generated details are factually correct in an arbitrary surveillance image. The NTIRE 2018 paper.
Does AI upscaling add information or make it up?
It adds pixels, but not measurements. The original image contains the captured evidence; the model uses learned patterns to propose a high-resolution version consistent with that evidence. Some edges or textures that were faintly present may become easier to see. Other details may be invented, altered, or smoothed away.

Duke’s report describes specific limits: the model could not recover some patterns on a helmet and over-smoothed some snow. Sachit Menon, a member of the team, warned that it cannot establish a crime-scene face’s identity: “You can’t stick an image from a crime scene through this and say, ‘oh it looks like this guy’s face,’” because the model extrapolates from what it thinks people generally look like.

Can it sharpen a security image, face, license plate, or text?
It can produce a sharper-looking image that may be easier to inspect. But if the original is too blurry or small to resolve a distinguishing feature, a model’s plausible reconstruction does not prove that the feature was present. That applies to faces and license plates in particular: do not use generated detail alone to identify a person or vehicle, or treat it as evidence of what the camera recorded.

Duke’s account says the method may help make blurry text more legible. Treat that as a reading aid, not confirmation: check the proposed reading against the original image and independent records or corroborating evidence. For legal, investigative, or other consequential decisions, preserve the unaltered source and clearly label any enhanced image as an AI-generated reconstruction.

MIT’s FeatUp, reported on March 18, 2024, addresses a related but different problem: the coarse internal feature maps produced by computer-vision networks. Deep models commonly reduce images to feature grids with cells 16–32 pixels across. FeatUp jitters the input, gathers hundreds of slightly different feature maps, and combines them into higher-resolution features.

MIT reports that FeatUp can provide a 16–32× more detailed view for some model-interpretation maps, with applications including object detection, semantic segmentation, depth estimation, and medical imaging. This figure describes detail in certain feature maps, not a general promise to enlarge ordinary photos by that factor or recover hidden scene facts. FeatUp is therefore not the same as the Duke demonstration of reconstructing a higher-resolution image from one low-resolution image. MIT’s FeatUp report.
How to judge an “enhanced” result
The right question is not just whether the output looks sharper. Consider what information was measured, what the model had to infer, and how the image will be used.
Quick Recap
- Fidelity to captured pixels: enlargement by interpolation stays close to the source pixels but cannot create fine detail; learned super-resolution adds estimates that may look convincing without being verified.
- Noise and artifacts: a learned model may suppress noise and visible artifacts, but it can also smooth real texture or introduce misleading patterns.
- Overall structure: preserving the broad shapes and layout matters, especially when local details are uncertain. The NTIRE paper identifies avoiding noise magnification and preserving large-scale structure as central technical challenges.
- Enlargement: the Duke demonstration showed a 4× output resolution; MIT’s 16–32× figure applies to the detail of some FeatUp feature maps, not ordinary photo enlargement.
- Use case: visual inspection and interpretation can benefit from a clearer rendering. Identity, evidentiary, or diagnostic decisions require evidence beyond generated detail.
- Compute: the sources describe neural-network processing and FeatUp’s aggregation of hundreds of feature maps, but do not provide comparable runtime or hardware requirements. A fair cost comparison cannot be made from those reports.
