The Rotary Actuated Dodecahedron (RAD) is a research sampler that folds five linked polymer petals into a hollow enclosure around an underwater animal. Researchers reported capturing and releasing squid and jellyfish without harm in specific trials, but that finding is not a guarantee for every species or condition.
How the folding sampler works
RAD stands for Rotary Actuated Dodecahedron. Five identical, 3-D-printed polymer petals attach to rotating joints. When a single motor applies torque where the petals meet, the linked parts fold into a hollow, twelve-sided enclosure. The joint and petal geometry guides the movement, so the sampler does not need a separate input for each petal. “Origami-inspired” describes this engineered folding mechanism; the device is made of rigid components, not paper. Harvard Gazette’s 2018 account describes the design.

What the reported trials showed
Aquarium tests
The team first tested RAD at Mystic Aquarium, where it collected and released moon jellyfish underwater.

For open-ocean use, researchers modified the sampler and mounted it on MBARI’s ROV Ventana. During reported trials at 500–700 meters (about 1,600–2,300 feet), the ROV’s manipulator arm and a human-operated joystick controlled the device. The team reported capturing squid and jellyfish in their natural habitats and releasing them without harm. The University of Rhode Island’s account and the Harvard Gazette report describe those trials.
#1 Best Overall
- 1-Inch wide handle for hanging
- Use as a holding tank, treatment tank or for observation
- Hang inside aquarium to utilize the benefits of heater
- Large, 7-inch long by 3.25-inch wide by 6-inch deep
Those accounts establish what the team reported for its tests, not a general injury rate, a controlled comparison with other capture methods, or proof that every animal will be unharmed under every operating condition. The original sampler also was not very good at bringing an entire animal back to the surface. As URI ocean engineer Brennan Phillips put it, it “isn’t very good at bringing a whole animal back up to the surface,” though it can quickly surround a delicate animal.
How RAD-2 extended the research
A later version, RAD-2, was used on a research mission by Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the University of Rhode Island. Rather than focusing only on enclosing an animal, that application collected tissue and preserved it at depth. The mission paired sampling with in-situ imaging: MBARI’s DeepPIV laser-scanning system and EyeRIS 3-D lightfield camera helped researchers measure and reconstruct animal body shapes in their natural environment. Harvard SEAS reported on the mission in January 2024.

- 1-Inch wide handle for hanging
- Hang inside aquarium to utilize the benefits of heater
- Multi-purpose, clear container
- Small, 5 1/8-inch by 2-1/2-inch by 4-1/2 -inch deep
That report describes genomic analysis of four animals sampled at depths of almost 4,000 feet, and a mission observation in which researchers measured a tiny jellyfish’s tentacles at 5 millimeters using high-resolution 3-D images. These are findings from that mission, not typical measurements for a species or a general performance specification.

Which collection goal does it serve?
| Research goal | What the reported device use supports |
|---|---|
| Enclose an animal underwater for capture and release | The original RAD was tested with moon jellyfish in an aquarium and used for reported squid and jellyfish captures in ROV field trials. |
| Collect tissue and preserve it at depth | RAD-2 was used for this purpose on the 2024 research mission. |
| Bring an intact animal to the surface | The original RAD was described by URI’s Brennan Phillips as not very good at bringing a whole animal back up. |
These uses serve different scientific needs: observing or releasing an animal in place, collecting tissue without first bringing the animal to the surface, or retrieving an intact specimen. The cited accounts do not provide capture success rates, comparative injury rates, species-by-species performance, or device pricing.

Is RAD available to buy?
The cited reports describe RAD and RAD-2 as researcher-operated equipment used in scientific missions; they do not establish that either version is commercially available. Their reported work is about enabling study of fragile animals in their natural environment, not a consumer capture product.
