An award is worth entering when the recognition matters to the people you want to reach, the judging process is credible, your work fits the category, and the likely benefit justifies the full cost in time and money. Start with the outcome you want—not the prospect of a trophy—and assess the specific award before paying or committing staff time.
What would you want the award to do?
Be specific about the outcome: customer confidence, recognition among peers, press attention, recruitment, team morale, learning from the application, networking, or a prize. These are possible benefits, not guaranteed results. An award can be valuable even without a cash prize if the right audience recognizes it; a win may have little practical value if that audience does not.
Before applying, ask who you hope will notice the result—prospective customers, partners, colleagues, journalists, or employees—and whether they understand what the award signals. Recognition can carry weight within a specialist field while remaining unfamiliar to the general public.
How can you assess whether an award is credible?
Look for information that lets you judge both the organizer and the process. Missing details mean you cannot assess them; they are not, by themselves, proof of misconduct.

- Organizer: Is there an identifiable organization with a track record?
- Judging: Are judges named or their qualifications explained? Does the organizer describe how conflicts of interest are handled?
- Criteria: Are eligibility rules, category definitions, scoring criteria, and the judging process published clearly?
- Past results: Can you verify previous winners and understand how selective the program is, including whether it has a meaningful shortlist?
- Costs: Are entry fees and any later charges disclosed before you commit?
A 2018 Awards Opinion Exchange report found that 89% of surveyed businesses rated the credibility of the company organizing awards among their top three influences when choosing an award; 69% did so for a clear scoring system, and 68% for confidence in judging integrity. These are historical survey results, not a current measure of every industry or award. AwardGrade’s methodology is one evaluator’s checklist for examining public disclosures, not a universal official standard.
What is the full cost of entering?
Do not compare awards by entry fee alone. Estimate the staff time needed to collect evidence, write and edit the application, obtain customer or colleague input, and secure approvals. Add travel or ceremony attendance, plus any post-win charge for a trophy or licence to use an award mark. Consider what other work those hours would displace.

Fees vary by program and do not, on their own, show whether an award is reputable or worthwhile. For example, RIBA says its entry fee depends on a project’s contract value and that financial support may be available case by case; check its current regional-awards information for applicable details.
Time can be a real barrier. In the Awards Opinion Exchange 2018 report, 50% of respondents who had never entered an award cited “too time consuming”; another 50% said awards were not something they had considered. These are historical findings, not estimates of current prevalence.

Does your work fit the category, and can you prove the results?
Read the current eligibility rules, category description, and weighted criteria before drafting. A strong application answers the rubric directly; a weak fit can leave good work looking unconvincing. Do not shoehorn a project into a category simply because it sounds prestigious.
Check that the results are mature enough for the claims you want to make and that you can substantiate important figures. BASDA advises waiting when customer results or persuasive metrics are not yet available. As one example of how specific a rubric can be, the 2026 Australian Export Awards weights business story and national benefit at 40%, national category at 20%, and business and export growth strategy at 40%. Those weights apply to that program and cycle only; they illustrate why you should examine the actual criteria for the award you are considering.

Evidence requirements also differ by program. Cannes Lions asks entrants to support statistics and results with verifiable evidence, such as press coverage, third-party analytics, certified measurement reports, client-confirmed results, or dated dashboards. Its guidance emphasizes connecting objectives to outcomes and showing real-world impact; other awards may set different requirements. Julie Jihyun Kang, CEO and Managing Partner of Serviceplan Korea and an Innovation Jury Member at Cannes Lions 2024, put the presentation challenge this way: “The case film is the emotional engine of your entry. So don’t overdramatise, keep it simple and sincere.”

If more than one program is plausible, compare the same factors for each rather than relying on prestige or entry price alone.

If you decide to enter, make it a small project
Assign an owner, agree on the desired outcome, and work backward from the deadline. A focused application is easier to review and defend than a last-minute collection of claims.
- Confirm the current eligibility rules, category definition, deadline, word limits, fee, and judging criteria directly with the organizer.
- Choose the category that best matches the work, then map each criterion to the evidence you can provide.
- Gather relevant, verifiable metrics and customer evidence. Explain objectives, context, and outcomes in plain language.
- Get permission to share customer quotes, results, or commercially sensitive material, and check any required evidence format.
- Proofread against the rules and have someone check that the application makes its case without overstating results.
- Decide in advance how you would communicate a shortlist or win accurately—for example, by informing clients, sharing a substantiated case study, recognizing the team, or supporting recruitment.
When should you wait or skip it?
Wait if results are not ready, important claims cannot yet be substantiated, or you need more time to obtain customer approval. Skip an award if its process is too opaque to evaluate, your work does not fit the category, or the likely audience and other benefits do not justify the cost and effort. There is no general award-entry return-on-investment figure established here, so do not assume an entry or win will pay for itself.
