A September 18, 1997 showroom quote from Yale Appliance totaled $9,596.55 for a luxury kitchen. In a September 2026 comparison, the retailer estimates that a kitchen at the same brand tier would cost about $32,000 today. That is not the same as saying appliance prices broadly “defy inflation”: the estimate is Yale’s comparison of selected products, not a market-wide average, and a separate report of the retailer’s video gives a different current total.
What was on the 1997 kitchen invoice?
Yale Appliance’s reproduced quote is dated September 18, 1997. Its total, $9,596.55, is exact to the cent; $9,597 is the rounded figure used in headlines.
| Appliance or component | Quoted price in 1997 |
|---|---|
| Sub-Zero 532 built-in side-by-side refrigerator | $3,780 |
| Thermador 36-inch gas cooktop | $1,075 |
| Downdraft intake | $450 |
| Thermador 600 CFM cabinet blower | $255 |
| Dacor double wall oven | $2,768.55 |
| KitchenAid 15-inch trash compactor | $479 |
| Bosch dishwasher with black door frame kit | $789 |
| Total | $9,596.55 |
The itemized prices and total come from Yale Appliance’s September 2026 article, which attributes the quote to its showroom records. The Cool Down’s October 3, 2026 coverage rounds the total to $9,597 and summarizes the package by its principal brands and appliances.
How much does Yale estimate the package costs now?
Yale’s September 2026 comparison puts the same brand tier at about $32,000 and a commodity-brand package at about $8,000. The Cool Down separately reports an estimate of about $35,000 from a Yale Appliance video. These are distinct estimates from different Yale comparisons, as reported by their respective sources; they should not be combined or treated as a single settled price.

Neither figure establishes an average for the appliance market. Yale is an appliance retailer comparing its own historic quote with current estimates, and current product prices depend on model, configuration, and installation. The retailer’s figures are useful as a specific example, not as a price forecast for every kitchen.
Why the “defy inflation” claim needs context
Yale says prices over the 29-year period would be about 108% higher based on its inflation comparison. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that its CPI calculator uses the CPI-U all-items, U.S. city average series, not seasonally adjusted; that methodology does not independently verify Yale’s specific 108% calculation. See the BLS inflation calculator methodology.

The striking differences are product-specific. In Yale’s comparison, a Bosch dishwasher priced at $760 in 1997 is about $1,000 today, an increase the retailer describes as 32%. By contrast, the Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator moves from $3,780 to about $17,000, which Yale describes as a 350% increase. Yale also puts a luxury double wall oven at about $10,000 today versus about $3,000 for a commodity model, and a current Thermador 36-inch gas cooktop at about $2,200. These are Yale’s approximate comparisons, not independently verified retail averages.
Those examples help explain the headline: some selected appliances rose less than Yale’s stated inflation comparison, while premium built-in refrigeration and luxury ovens rose much more. “Defy inflation” therefore describes a few product-and-tier comparisons, not a general rule that appliances are cheaper now.

What makes a 1997 appliance comparison difficult?
A similar footprint does not guarantee an equivalent appliance. Yale cautions against treating a built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator as interchangeable with a counter-depth LG simply because dimensions look similar. Build type, features, capacity, finish, and installation requirements all affect what counts as a like-for-like comparison.
Some lines on the old quote also do not map neatly to a present-day order. Yale notes that the downdraft system and trash compactor have changed in relevance or configuration, so their historic prices cannot simply be carried forward as matching current items.

How to compare appliance prices meaningfully
For a practical comparison, match products by more than brand or size. Check whether each option is built-in, freestanding, or counter-depth; compare features and configuration; use a current purchase price for the exact model; and confirm that the older product category still has a close modern equivalent. If those details differ, describe the comparison as an example of price change rather than a direct replacement cost.
