Is Terraria Cross-Platform in 2026? Crossplay and Server Setup Guide

Terraria 1.4.6 is planned as Crossplay Phase One, but the latest verified September 2026 update still described it as forthcoming. This guide explains platform support, version matching, dedicated servers, console rollout, legacy hardware and troubleshooting.

Terraria crossplay is not yet confirmed as universally live. Re-Logic and DR Studios call Terraria 1.4.6 “Crossplay Phase One.” In the latest official status available for this guide, dated September 24, 2026, the team said it was completing the phase and expected it to reach players “in the near future.” Until a 1.4.6 release announcement and platform-specific notes confirm the rollout, treat PC-to-console and full desktop-console-mobile multiplayer as pending rather than guaranteed.

PC, dedicated-server, and mobile multiplayer already has a documented version-parity requirement: every participant and the server must run the same Terraria release. Console participation additionally depends on certification and cooperation with Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

What “cross-platform” means for Terraria

Cross-platform multiplayer means players on different device families can join the same world. For Terraria, the planned scope of Crossplay Phase One covers desktop, console and mobile editions. That is different from cross-save: the official updates cited for this guide do not establish shared progression, shared purchases, or automatic character transfer between platforms.

It is also different from ordinary multiplayer within one platform family. Two PC players on the same release are already using multiplayer, but that alone does not prove that a PC player can join a PlayStation, Xbox or Switch player. A claim of “crossplay” should therefore identify the participating platform families, the exact Terraria version and whether the session uses a peer host or a dedicated server.

The latest official status in 2026

The schedule has moved toward crossplay, but the final public release confirmation is the important dividing line.

Date and source What it established Practical meaning
February 2026 State of the Game PC, dedicated-server and mobile play works when all are on the same release version. Version parity is a stated condition for this path; it is not a promise that every console edition can join.
March 2026 State of the Game Console cross-platform multiplayer requires cooperation with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Code readiness alone cannot make a console rollout live; platform-holder certification and release timing matter.
August 2026 State of the Game After PC, console and mobile reach stable version 1.4.5.7, the team planned to move directly into Terraria 1.4.6, identified as Crossplay Phase One. Version 1.4.5.7 was the stabilization checkpoint before the crossplay build.
September 24, 2026 Terraria Community Forums update The team said it was putting the finishing touches on Crossplay Phase One and that it should be in players’ hands in the near future. The latest verified statement still described the feature as forthcoming, not as a universally shipped service.

“Once 1.4.5.7 is out for Console and Mobile and we have a few days to ensure all is well and stable, we will be pushing directly into Terraria 1.4.6, which will be Phase One of Crossplay!” — Re-Logic, August 2026 State of the Game

“The rest of the team has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on Crossplay Phase One … Crossplay – Phase One should be in your hands in the near future!” — Terraria Community Forums, September 24, 2026

No verified post-September 24 release notice is included in the available official record. Check the 1.4.6 release notes and the notes for your particular platform before scheduling a cross-platform session.

Which platforms are included?

Platform family 2026 status What you need to verify
Desktop PC Included in the planned Phase One scope. PC can also participate in the documented PC/dedicated-server/mobile path when releases match. Exact 1.4.6 availability, server software version and whether the other player’s platform has received the same build.
Mobile Included in the planned desktop-console-mobile scope. Official updates specifically describe mobile joining PC and dedicated-server play when versions match. That the mobile edition has the same release number as the PC client or server, and that the server’s connection method is supported by the mobile release.
Current-generation consoles Planned for Phase One, but the final live status depends on platform-holder certification and rollout. 1.4.6 release availability for the specific console, regional rollout and the final console joining instructions.
Legacy or old-generation consoles Do not assume they belong to the modern crossplay pool. Re-Logic has warned that future current-generation updates would make crossplay with old-generation platforms impossible. A legacy edition may therefore be unable to join a modern 1.4.6 session.

“Console” is not a single compatibility category. A current-generation release that receives 1.4.6 may have a different support boundary from an older console edition, even if both are sold under the Terraria name. Regional certification can also cause two players on the same hardware family to receive an update at different times.

Does Terraria 1.4.6 enable crossplay?

Terraria 1.4.6 is the build associated with Crossplay Phase One. The planned scope is cross-play among desktop, console and mobile editions, but the feature becomes dependable only when the release is published for the relevant platforms and the platform notes confirm participation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not interpret the phrase “Phase One” as a promise that every historical edition, mod loader or hosting arrangement will work. It identifies the first crossplay rollout. The official material does not define a separate compatibility promise for old-generation consoles, modded clients or every possible peer-host configuration.

Can PC play with PlayStation, Xbox or Switch?

That is the intended use case for Phase One, but it remains release-dependent in the latest verified status. A PC player should wait until all of the following are true:

  • Terraria 1.4.6 is released for the PC and the particular console edition.
  • The console’s platform notes explicitly include cross-platform multiplayer, rather than only same-platform multiplayer.
  • The PC client, console client and any server are on compatible release numbers.
  • The console account and privacy settings permit multiplayer and joining external sessions where required by that platform.
  • The edition is current-generation or otherwise listed as supported; old-generation compatibility should not be presumed.

If one player can see a new update and another cannot, the problem is usually rollout timing or version mismatch, not a missing in-game invitation. Do not downgrade one device or install an unofficial build to force a match.

Can mobile join a PC Terraria server?

Yes, the official February 2026 statement describes PC, dedicated-server and mobile crossplay when all three are on the same release version. The official wiki summary also describes desktop-mobile dedicated-server play as possible before console support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This makes a dedicated server the clearest documented route for a PC-and-mobile group. The server must run the same supported Terraria release as both clients. A mobile player should use the joining method exposed by that release; do not assume that a connection method available on desktop is exposed identically on every mobile edition.

The statement is about crossplay capability, not an unlimited guarantee for every network, region or device. If mobile can join a same-version local or platform-specific session but not the server, test the server’s release, address, firewall and rollout status separately.

How to set up a Terraria crossplay server

Use this procedure after 1.4.6 has been released for every platform in your group. Before that point, treat any console workflow as provisional because the final instructions were not yet published in the latest official update.

1. Define the platform group

Write down every player’s platform family and generation: desktop PC, mobile, current console or legacy console. A group that includes a legacy console needs a separate compatibility decision before you prepare a world. Do not mix a current-generation 1.4.6 plan with an old-generation edition unless the release notes explicitly list it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm the exact release number

Have each player open Terraria’s title screen or platform update information and record the complete version shown. Check the dedicated server’s version separately. Version parity is an explicit requirement for the PC/dedicated-server/mobile path, and it is the first check to make for any Phase One session.

Do not rely on a claim that everyone is “on the latest version.” A console rollout can lag behind PC or mobile, and a server package can remain on an earlier build after the host computer updates. The client and server must be compatible with the same release supported by the group.

3. Choose a hosting model

Use a dedicated server when the world should remain available independently of one player’s game session. Use a peer host only when the released platform notes explicitly support the cross-platform combination you intend to use and the host can stay online for the session.

Hosting model Best for Checks and limitations
Peer host A short session where one player starts and manages the world. The host’s platform must support the other platform families. The world is normally available only while the host is running the session. Final console joining steps depend on the Phase One release notes.
Dedicated server A persistent world, scheduled groups and players who join at different times. Install server software matching the clients, keep the world and server release aligned, and use the direct server-joining method supported by each platform. Console support must still be confirmed in the final release documentation.

4. Prepare a clean, backed-up world

Make a backup of the world and characters before the first cross-platform test. Use a copy for compatibility testing so that an update or failed connection cannot put the only world file at risk. Keep the backup associated with the same release until the group confirms that the new build loads correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether the session will use unmodified content. The cited official updates establish cross-platform release parity, but they do not establish support for tModLoader or other mods in cross-platform sessions. For a first test, use the standard game and an unmodified world.

5. Install or update the server

Obtain the dedicated-server software intended for the same Terraria release as the clients. Apply the update before creating a new world or opening an existing one. If the server reports a different release from a client, stop there and correct the mismatch rather than repeatedly retrying the connection.

Configure the world, player permissions and network access using the options provided with that release. The precise console workflow and any platform-specific account linking should come from the final 1.4.6 documentation; do not substitute instructions written for an earlier generation or edition.

6. Test with one player from each platform family

Start with one PC or mobile player and one console player, rather than inviting the whole group at once. Confirm that both can see the world, move, interact and reconnect after leaving. This isolates a platform rollout problem from a general server or network problem.

Once the basic test succeeds, add the remaining players one at a time. Record the release number and platform for any device that fails so that troubleshooting is based on evidence rather than repeated invitations.

7. Document the working connection method

Write down the server address or in-game joining path that worked, the server release, the world name and the supported platform list. Keep this information with the world backup. A later platform update can change availability even when the server configuration itself has not changed.

Version parity: the rule that prevents most failed joins

For the documented PC, dedicated-server and mobile route, every participant and the server must be on the same release version. A mismatch can occur when:

  • One store has not delivered the latest update in that player’s region.
  • The dedicated server is still running an older package.
  • A player launches a legacy edition instead of the current-generation release.
  • A beta, preview or test build differs from the public build.
  • An update completed on the client but the server process was not restarted.

Have every player quit Terraria completely after updating, then verify the displayed release again. Restart the dedicated server after replacing its files. If the versions still differ, wait for the slower platform rollout instead of altering files or using an unsupported downgrade.

Dedicated-server operations for a persistent world

A persistent server needs more than a successful first connection. Assign one person responsibility for the world file, server updates and backups. Before applying a new release:

  1. Stop the server cleanly so the world can be saved.
  2. Copy the world and configuration files to a separate backup location.
  3. Note the current release and the players’ platform list.
  4. Update the server package to the release supported by the clients.
  5. Start the server without mods for the first compatibility check.
  6. Test one client from each participating platform family.

Keep the old server files and backup until everyone has confirmed that the updated world loads. If a platform receives an update before the others, leave the shared world on the common supported release rather than allowing only one player to connect.

Mods and custom content

Do not promise modded cross-platform play. The official sources cited here do not establish that tModLoader or other mods are supported in cross-platform sessions, and a modded desktop installation does not prove that console or mobile clients can load the same content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For troubleshooting, remove the variable entirely: use the standard Terraria client, an unmodified world and the supported dedicated-server build. If that works, any later mod experiment should be treated as a separate, unsupported test with a separate world backup.

Old-generation consoles and compatibility boundaries

Re-Logic has documented a hard boundary for legacy hardware: future current-generation updates would make crossplay with old-generation platforms impossible. That means an old console edition should not be advertised as part of the modern crossplay pool simply because it can run Terraria or connect to other players today.

If your group includes an older console, check the edition and release notes before buying, updating or migrating a world. The practical choices may be to keep a legacy-only session, move all players to supported current platforms or use separate worlds. Do not assume that a save created on an old edition will behave identically after moving to a current-generation release.

Troubleshooting a failed crossplay connection

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The server is visible to one player but not another. Platform rollout, regional availability or an edition boundary. Check the exact platform generation, region and 1.4.6 availability. Confirm that the platform is listed in the release notes.
A client reports an incompatible version. The client and server are on different releases. Record every version, update the outlier and restart the server. Do not modify files to force a match.
PC and mobile work, but a console cannot join. Console certification or final Phase One instructions are not available for that console. Verify that the console build has the crossplay feature, not just a general Terraria update. Wait for the supported rollout if necessary.
A legacy console cannot join a current session. The old-generation compatibility boundary. Use a supported current-generation edition or keep the session within the legacy platform group.
A modded PC client fails while an unmodified client works. Cross-platform mod support is not established. Return to the standard client and unmodified world. Treat modded play as unsupported unless a later official document says otherwise.
Players can join but cannot reconnect later. Peer hosting ended, the server is offline or the server configuration changed. Use a dedicated server for persistence, confirm it is running the same release and retain the working connection details.
Repeated invitations produce no useful error. Testing several variables at once. Reduce the test to one server, one client from each platform family and an unmodified world. Add players only after the first connection succeeds.

What the official information does not yet establish

Several popular assumptions go beyond the verified statements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • No official player-count, latency or reliability statistic is established for Phase One, so there is no supported number to use as a performance guarantee.
  • No universal console joining workflow is available in the cited September update; the final 1.4.6 notes should take priority over older guides.
  • No cross-platform mod-support promise is established for tModLoader or other mod systems.
  • No compatibility guarantee is established for old-generation consoles in the modern crossplay pool.
  • Crossplay does not by itself establish cross-save, shared purchases or account-wide progression.

Planning a group session in 2026

For a group arranging play now, the safest plan is conditional:

  1. List each player’s exact platform and generation.
  2. Wait for the 1.4.6 Phase One release notice and platform notes.
  3. Update every client and the server to the same supported release.
  4. Test an unmodified world with one player from each platform family.
  5. Use a dedicated server if the world must remain available between sessions.
  6. Keep backups and record the working release and joining method.

If the release notice confirms your platform combination, these checks turn the official version-parity requirement into a repeatable setup. If it does not, the correct answer is to keep the group on a supported same-platform or PC/mobile arrangement rather than promising crossplay that the edition cannot provide.

Bottom line

Terraria 1.4.6 is the planned Crossplay Phase One release, with desktop, console and mobile as its intended platform families. The latest official update available here, from September 24, 2026, still described the phase as nearing release. PC, dedicated-server and mobile play has a documented same-version path; console play additionally depends on certification and rollout. Verify the 1.4.6 platform notes, keep every client and server on the same release, exclude legacy consoles unless explicitly supported and avoid assuming that mods or cross-save are included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does crossplay mean my Terraria character and purchases transfer between platforms?

No such cross-save or shared-purchase feature is established in the official Phase One statements. Treat crossplay as the ability to join a shared world, not as automatic progression or entitlement transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if one store has not delivered Terraria 1.4.6 yet?

Keep the group on the common supported release, or wait for the slower platform rollout. Do not downgrade, replace files or use an unofficial build to force version parity.

Can I use a modded PC client in a cross-platform session?

Official sources do not establish support for tModLoader or other mods in cross-platform sessions. Test with the standard client and an unmodified world unless a later official release note explicitly adds mod support.
