How to Fix “Failed to Connect” Errors on a Valheim Server

Valheim’s “Failed to connect” message can come from an unready server, Steam port forwarding, Crossplay addressing, an expired Join code, or mismatched versions. Follow this diagnostic order to identify and fix the exact cause.

Most Valheim connection failures have a specific cause: the server is not ready, the server and player are using different backends, Steam ports are not reachable, a Join code is stale, or the game versions do not match. Start by checking the host console for “Game server connected.” Then identify whether the server uses Steam or Crossplay and follow the matching network and platform checks below.

Start with the five-minute diagnosis

Do these checks in order. Each one eliminates an entire class of failures without changing settings that may already be correct.

  1. Watch the server console. A working dedicated server eventually prints “Game server connected.” Iron Gate Studios’ dedicated-server guide treats that message as the indication that the server is running and ready to accept connections. If it never appears, the problem is on the host: inspect startup arguments and the server log before troubleshooting a player’s game.
  2. Identify the backend. A launch without -crossplay uses the Steam backend. A launch with -crossplay uses the PlayFab Crossplay backend. This choice determines which platforms can join and whether outside players need router port forwarding.
  3. Check the player’s platform and game version. Steam-only servers accept Steam users. Xbox and Microsoft Store players require Crossplay. The server and every client must also be on the same patch version.
  4. Use the correct connection method. Steam mode normally requires a reachable public address and forwarded ports. Crossplay can use a server list, a public address and port, or a current Join code, but it cannot be tested with a local or loopback address.
  5. Replace old Join codes. A dedicated server generates a new code whenever it restarts. Copy the code again from the running server before trying another connection.

If these checks identify the fault, change only the relevant setting. Repeatedly reinstalling Valheim or deleting a world will not repair an unreachable port, an incompatible backend, or an expired code.

What “Failed to connect” means in Valheim

The message is a generic result rather than a diagnosis. The connection can fail before the game reaches the server, while the server is negotiating the backend, or after the server rejects an incompatible client. The same wording can therefore appear for very different causes.

  • Server not ready: the process is running, but it has not reached “Game server connected,” or it stopped while loading the world.
  • Backend mismatch: the server is Steam-only while the player is trying to join from Xbox or Microsoft Store, or the launch configuration is not the one the host expects.
  • Unreachable Steam endpoint: the configured port range is not forwarded to the host, the operating-system firewall blocks the server, or forwarding uses a different port than the server launch option.
  • Invalid Crossplay address: the player is testing a local or loopback IP even though Crossplay uses a relay and does not accept those addresses.
  • Stale Join code: the code was copied before the most recent dedicated-server restart.
  • Version mismatch: a client or server has a different patch build.

Do not infer the cause from whether the server appears in a list. A listing proves that some discovery information is available; it does not prove that the endpoint, backend, account, or game build can complete a session.

Confirm that the dedicated server is actually ready

Find the readiness message

Leave the dedicated-server console visible during startup. The decisive test is the exact line “Game server connected.” Once it appears, the server is up and accepting connections according to Iron Gate’s guide. A window that remains open without this line is not evidence that players can join.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the message never appears

Check the host log around the last startup messages and verify the launch configuration. Look for a malformed argument, a world or save path that cannot be opened, a port value different from the one you forwarded, or a process that exits and relaunches. Correct the host problem first; a player-side Join code or firewall change cannot make an unready process accept connections.

After changing the launch configuration, stop the server cleanly, start it again, and wait for the readiness message. Treat that restart as a new connection event: Crossplay Join codes are regenerated, and players should obtain a fresh code.

Keep the host evidence

When the console shows an error, save the surrounding lines rather than only the final “failed” message. The backend mode, configured port, world name, startup arguments, and the time at which “Game server connected” does or does not appear are useful when the problem must be escalated.

Determine whether the server uses Steam or Crossplay

Steam backend

A server started without -crossplay uses Steam. It is visible only to Steam users. In this mode, outside players need the server’s configured port range to be reachable from the Internet, and the host must allow the server process through its operating-system firewall.

PlayFab Crossplay backend

A server started with -crossplay uses the PlayFab Crossplay backend. The server transmits traffic through a relay, so Iron Gate states that router port forwarding is not required for players outside the local network. Crossplay supports users from different platforms, subject to the game and account platform’s eligibility rules.

Question Steam backend Crossplay backend
Launch selection Start without -crossplay Start with -crossplay
Platform reach Steam users only Supports cross-platform players, including Xbox when both sides use Crossplay
Outside-network access Requires an Internet-reachable configured port range and firewall allowance Uses a relay; router port forwarding is not required for outside players
Joining methods Use the server’s supported public address/listing method Use the server list, a Join code, or a supported public address and port
Local or loopback address May be useful for a host-side test when appropriate Not valid for joining; Crossplay cannot be joined with a local or loopback IP

Do not mix instructions between columns. Forwarding ports on a Crossplay server does not replace a valid Join code, and searching for a Steam-only server from Xbox cannot work regardless of router settings.

Fix Steam-backend port and firewall failures

Use the configured port, not an assumed one

Iron Gate documents 2456–2457 as the default dedicated-server range (Iron Gate Studios, 2024). Valheim uses the configured port and the next port. If the launch configuration changes the base port, forward that new base port and its next port instead of forwarding the defaults.

Item What to verify
Base port The port specified in the server’s launch configuration
Second port The base port plus one; with the default, this is 2457
Router destination Both ports point to the host machine’s current local IP address
Protocol Use the protocol settings required by the current Valheim dedicated-server guide and your router; do not assume a rule for only one port is sufficient
Firewall Allow the dedicated-server executable and its required network traffic through the host operating system’s firewall
Port consistency The router rule, firewall rule, and server launch argument all refer to the same base port

Forward the range to the correct machine

Sign in to the router, open its port-forwarding or virtual-server page, and create rules for the configured port and port+1. Select the host machine’s current local address. If that address changes through DHCP, the router can later forward to the wrong device; reserve the host’s local address or update the rules after an address change.

On the host, open the operating-system firewall controls and allow the Valheim dedicated-server process. A router rule only brings packets to the network; the firewall still decides whether the process can receive them. If security software has a separate network-control component, check that it has not created a more restrictive rule.

Interpret the symptoms

  • Friends cannot see a Steam server: confirm “Game server connected,” then check both forwarded ports, the host’s local IP, and firewall permission.
  • The server appears but joining times out: verify that the forwarded base port matches the server argument and that the second port was forwarded as well.
  • It worked until the host rebooted: check whether the host received a new local IP and whether the router rule still targets that machine.
  • A local player can join but an outside player cannot: the local test does not prove Internet reachability; inspect router forwarding, the public address, and firewall rules.

Iron Gate describes Internet-reachable ports as the most important Steam-backend requirement. Do not spend time replacing a Join code while the Steam endpoint is still inaccessible.

Use Crossplay addresses and Join codes correctly

Do not use a local or loopback IP

Crossplay traffic travels through a relay. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide says a Crossplay server cannot be joined with a local or loopback IP. An address such as a machine’s private-network address can therefore fail even when the Crossplay server itself is healthy. Use the server list, a current Join code, or a supported public address and port.

Copy a fresh Join code

When a server is running, enter the pause menu to view its Join code. In the player’s game, open Join Game > Add server and paste the code, as described in Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ. Treat the code as temporary: Steam patch notes state that it is regenerated whenever the dedicated server restarts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ask the host to confirm that the current server process displays “Game server connected.”
  2. Have the host open the pause menu and copy the code shown for this running session.
  3. On the joining device, open Join Game, choose Add server, and paste the code exactly.
  4. If the server restarts, discard the old code and repeat the process.

A code that worked yesterday can fail today without any change to the world or router. The restart itself is enough to invalidate it.

When a public address is appropriate

Iron Gate says Crossplay can be joined by public IP and port, a Join code, or the server list. Use a public address only when the host has confirmed the correct value and port. Never substitute a local address for a public one during a Crossplay test, and do not assume that a successful local-network connection demonstrates that a remote player can use the same address.

Align Valheim versions before changing network settings

Iron Gate’s 4 October 2022 Crossplay patch notes warn that players should use the same patch version because mismatched builds may not connect. Check the version shown in the lower-right corner of the main menu on every client and compare it with the server’s installed build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close Valheim on each joining device.
  2. Use the platform’s update function to install the current game build.
  3. Update or replace the dedicated-server files on the host so the server is on the same patch.
  4. Restart the server after the update and wait for “Game server connected.”
  5. Generate and distribute a new Crossplay Join code if the server uses Crossplay.

Version matching is required even when discovery works. A server can appear in a list, and a Join code can be accepted, while the session still fails during connection negotiation because one side is behind.

Can Xbox join a Steam dedicated server?

No. A server using the Steam backend is visible only to Steam users. Xbox and Microsoft Store players need a server started with -crossplay, and the Xbox client must also have Crossplay enabled where the game presents that option.

Xbox consoles cannot run the dedicated-server application themselves. The server must run on a supported host, while the Xbox connects as a client. For a mixed Steam-and-Xbox group, configure Crossplay, wait for “Game server connected,” and distribute a fresh Join code or use the server list. Do not try to solve a Steam-only platform restriction with port forwarding; ports cannot add Xbox compatibility to the Steam backend.

Choose the fix from the symptom

Observed situation Most likely branch Next action
The console never prints “Game server connected” Host startup or configuration problem Inspect the server log and launch arguments; fix the host before testing clients
Steam players cannot see or reach the server Steam network path Forward the configured port and port+1, target the correct host IP, and allow the process through the firewall
Xbox cannot join, while Steam can Steam-only backend Restart the server with -crossplay; Xbox cannot join a Steam backend
Crossplay works for some players but a local-IP test fails Invalid addressing method Use the server list, a fresh Join code, or the supported public address; do not use local or loopback IP
A previously working code fails after a restart Regenerated Join code Copy the code from the new running session and add it again
Everyone receives a connection failure after an update Version mismatch Compare main-menu client versions with the server build and update both sides
Only one player fails while others join Client-specific version, platform, or local network issue Check that player’s patch version and platform eligibility, then retry with the current code or server listing

Restart, saves, and backups without making the problem worse

A restart is useful after changing launch arguments, updating the server, or correcting firewall rules, but it has two operational consequences: the server must again reach “Game server connected,” and a Crossplay Join code changes. Tell players when the restart is complete and send the new code rather than reusing an earlier message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Iron Gate’s 2024 dedicated-server documentation lists a default world-save interval of 1,800 seconds (30 minutes) and four automatic backups: one shorter-interval backup and three backups at longer intervals. Those settings protect the world from some operational mistakes, but they do not repair a network path or make an incompatible client connect. Avoid deleting world files as a first response to a connection error; preserve the save while you diagnose the server and collect logs.

Escalate with useful evidence

If the documented checks do not resolve the failure, use Iron Gate’s support form. Include enough context for support to distinguish a host, backend, network, and client problem:

  • The exact error text and when it appears
  • Each affected player’s platform, such as Steam, Xbox, or Microsoft Store
  • Whether the server was launched with -crossplay
  • The server’s configured base port and whether the default 2456–2457 range or a custom range is being used
  • The server log around the failure, including whether “Game server connected” appeared
  • The server version and the version shown in each client’s lower-right main-menu corner
  • Whether the server is visible in a list, whether a Join code was used, and whether that code was copied after the latest restart
  • Whether the failure affects everyone or only one player

Do not send only “failed to connect.” The backend, platform mix, readiness message, version pair, and connection method are the facts that narrow the cause.

A reliable order for future server changes

  1. Write down the intended backend and platform mix before editing the launch configuration.
  2. Keep the base port, port+1, host local IP, and firewall rule aligned when using Steam.
  3. After every server restart, wait for “Game server connected.”
  4. After every Crossplay restart, copy and distribute the new Join code.
  5. After every game update, verify the server and all clients show the same patch version.
  6. Record the date, change made, and resulting console message so a later failure can be traced to a specific change.

This sequence separates readiness, compatibility, addressing, and version checks. It prevents a stale code from being blamed on the router and prevents a platform restriction from being mistaken for a firewall problem.
