But the license does not provide the computer or cloud server, power, internet connection, storage, monitoring, or recovery needed to operate a 24/7 YouTube stream. SRS can be part of that setup; it does not guarantee that the full broadcast pipeline will stay online.
What “free” means for SRS
The SRS project repository says SRS is licensed under MIT and notes that some third-party libraries have their own licenses. Read the repository’s license notices for the particular build and use case you plan to use: SRS repository.

The MIT license applies to the software, not to the resources or work of running it. A 24/7 setup still needs a host, continuous power and network access, storage if you are recording, and someone or something to monitor failures and restore service. SRS documents Docker and remote-server deployment, but the available project guidance does not establish a current hosting price or uptime guarantee. See the SRS v8 Docker getting-started guide.

What SRS does—and what YouTube still requires
SRS is a media server with RTMP and other protocol support. Its project materials include Docker startup instructions and FFmpeg and OBS examples. That makes it a possible component in a streaming pipeline, not a ready-made YouTube broadcast: you must configure how the source reaches SRS and how the feed is sent onward to YouTube.

YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room to be entered into the encoder sending the broadcast. Installing SRS alone does not create the YouTube event, configure that connection, or remove YouTube account and live-stream settings. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live stream settings guidance for the current workflow.
The SRS v8 guide demonstrates a looped FFmpeg input sent into SRS. It is an example of a looping pattern, not proof that every file, configuration, host, or YouTube connection will run indefinitely. Test the entire pipeline with the source and network conditions you expect to use.

What a 24/7 operator needs to plan
- Choose where it runs. A home machine depends on uninterrupted household power and internet. A remote server avoids relying on those home conditions, but brings separate compute and network costs. SRS guidance covers Docker and remote-server deployment; it does not compare providers or specify a minimum host size.
- Plan for interruptions. A process can stop, a host or connection can fail, and YouTube can disconnect the feed. YouTube recommends testing the encoder, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video quality, confirming that a local archive file is growing, and testing backup-encoder failover. These are operational checks, not an uptime promise. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: YouTube says it lets an encoder send a feed, and a compromised key can be reset. Keep it out of public configuration, shared logs, and screenshots. Use the endpoint provided in Live Control Room; where your encoder supports it, YouTube also documents encrypted RTMPS connections. See YouTube’s stream settings and RTMPS instructions.
- Decide how to preserve the broadcast. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete record of a continuous broadcast, arrange a local recording and consider splitting the broadcast into shorter sessions. Check Live Control Room behavior before relying on an archive, since platform guidance and interfaces can change. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
