Yes—but SRS is not the playlist player. A typical no-OBS setup uses FFmpeg to read and publish the video, with SRS acting as an optional media-server relay before YouTube. For a simple local playlist, FFmpeg can send the feed directly to YouTube, so SRS may add unnecessary setup.
What each part does
- FFmpeg reads the video or playlist and sends an encoded or stream-copied live feed.
- SRS is a media server. Its documentation shows FFmpeg publishing a local media file to an SRS RTMP endpoint; it does not establish SRS as a turnkey playlist scheduler. SRS introduction and SRS RTMP documentation.
- YouTube receives the live encoder feed at its ingest URL, authenticated with the stream key shown in Live Control Room. The URL specifies where to send the feed; the key authorizes it. YouTube encoder setup.
So the two practical designs are FFmpeg → YouTube, or FFmpeg → SRS → YouTube. The SRS route needs a separate, correctly configured forwarding or publishing step to carry the feed onward to YouTube.

Choose direct publishing or an SRS relay
| Consideration | FFmpeg → YouTube | FFmpeg → SRS → YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| Components | Fewer: encoder and YouTube ingest. | More: encoder, SRS server, and a configured path from SRS to YouTube. |
| When it fits | A local playlist that can be read by the machine running FFmpeg. | A workflow that already needs SRS to receive or distribute media. |
| Setup burden | Configure the source, output, and YouTube stream credentials. | Configure FFmpeg-to-SRS and separately configure onward publishing. A complete version-specific forwarding recipe is not established here. |
| Operational dependency | The FFmpeg host needs access to the media and a stable connection. | The encoder, SRS host, network path, and onward publishing configuration must all work. |
If you do not need SRS for another part of your workflow, start by evaluating direct FFmpeg publishing. YouTube documents encoder-based ingest and recommends RTMPS, but the exact command depends on your files and current ingest details; do not treat the SRS single-file example as a playlist command. - Confirm how the playlist is represented. Identify whether it is a list of files, a concat-demuxer file, or another playlist format. Check file paths and whether each file has compatible video, audio, codecs, frame rate, and stream layout. Looping behavior and safe stream-copying depend on those details.
- Decide whether SRS is actually needed. For direct publishing, FFmpeg is the publisher and sends to YouTube. For a relay design, FFmpeg publishes to SRS, then a separate SRS configuration must forward or publish that feed to YouTube. SRS documentation’s FFmpeg example demonstrates publishing a local file to SRS; it does not supply a universal repeating-playlist or end-to-end YouTube relay recipe. SRS RTMP documentation.
- Get the current YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and use the stream URL and stream key for the stream you intend to run. Follow the encoder settings YouTube currently specifies for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Treat the stream key like a password: do not expose it in a public command, screenshot, or log, and rotate it if it is exposed. YouTube encoder setup and encoder settings.
- Choose stream-copying or re-encoding deliberately. SRS’s documented example uses FFmpeg with
-c copyto publish a local file to SRS. That is an example of the protocol relationship, not proof that every playlist can be copied seamlessly or that its output meets YouTube’s current requirements. Re-encoding may be needed when source files are incompatible or inconsistent; use YouTube’s current codec and bitrate guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits all. SRS RTMP documentation and YouTube encoder settings. - Validate the specific playlist before leaving it unattended. Test the actual playlist and chosen output path. Confirm that items advance in order, playback continues at the end if looping is intended, audio remains present, and the feed survives transitions between files. A single-file command does not prove these playlist behaviors.
- Run a controlled YouTube test. Use an unlisted or scheduled stream, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and verify audio, motion, and the expected resolution. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion. Check current Live Control Room behavior rather than assuming every stream will archive identically. RTMPS versus HLS
For the ordinary encoder workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Do not confuse an outward FFmpeg connection to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest with running an RTMPS server in SRS: the cited SRS documentation describes its RTMPS server capability as version-specific, available in SRS v7.0.56 and later. HLS ingest is a different protocol path, not a synonym for a playlist file. YouTube’s HLS requirements specify HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments. An ordinary media playlist or SRS-generated HLS output should not be assumed compliant without checking its actual output configuration. These are YouTube Help requirements, accessed in 2026. Video and audio parameters
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; bitrate guidance varies across those dimensions. Check the source files as well as the final encoder output, especially when a playlist combines recordings made with different settings. There is no single bitrate or copy-mode setting that can safely be prescribed for every playlist. YouTube encoder settings.

Copyright, stream health, and archiving
- Use content you have rights to stream. A playlist being technically playable does not grant permission to broadcast its music, video, or other material. Review YouTube’s copyright rules and any applicable permissions before scheduling a stream.
- Monitor the actual live feed. Inspect the preview and stream health during the test, including audio and moving scenes, then verify the playlist’s transitions. A process that is running is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Check archive status after the event. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm the current Live Control Room behavior for your stream. YouTube live streaming setup.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no feed | Incorrect ingest URL or stream key, a blocked connection, or the encoder not publishing to the expected destination. | Recheck the current Live Control Room details, encoder output target, and stream health. Keep the key private. |
| FFmpeg publishes to SRS but YouTube stays offline | SRS is receiving the feed, but onward forwarding to YouTube is absent or misconfigured. | Verify the SRS version and its separate forwarding/publishing configuration; the documented FFmpeg-to-SRS example alone does not complete that route. |
| Playlist stops after one file | The input was configured as a single-file source, or the playlist’s end/loop behavior is not configured for the format in use. | Check playlist format, ordering, paths, and repeat behavior with a controlled test. |
| Playback breaks between files | Files may differ in codecs, stream layout, frame rate, or other parameters that make seamless stream-copying unsuitable. | Inspect the files and output; determine whether consistent re-encoding is needed. |
| Video or audio is missing or unstable | Input streams or output settings may not match the expected configuration. | Check the selected video and audio streams, codec compatibility, resolution, frame rate, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| HLS ingest is rejected or unhealthy | The output may not satisfy YouTube’s HLS protocol requirements. | Confirm HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than maintaining an FFmpeg/SRS setup, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video playback to YouTube, not a camera live feed. Start the free day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SRS itself load and schedule a repeating video playlist?
The cited SRS documentation establishes its media-server and RTMP relay role, not a turnkey playlist scheduler. Use an encoder/publisher such as FFmpeg for playlist playback.
