SquirrelDisk says scans stay local and critical locations are protected from collection. You still choose what to remove, and permanent or remote deletion can be hard or impossible to undo. What SquirrelDisk does—and what scanning does not do
SquirrelDisk is a disk-usage analyzer for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It displays storage use as a sunburst chart or treemap so you can spot large folders. Scanning shows what is taking up space; it is separate from deciding to remove anything. The app offers cleanup choices including moving selected items to Trash or Recycle Bin, permanent deletion, optional secure erase, and backing up before deletion.

SquirrelDisk is described by its developer as free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license. Its press kit lists version 2.5.0 dated 30 September 2026 and support for 25 languages: SquirrelDisk press kit. The product page describes the app as approximately 8 MB; that is a product-page specification, not an independent performance measurement: SquirrelDisk.

If you mean whether opening it automatically deletes files or whether a scan uploads your file names, the developer says no: cleanup requires you to select items and choose an action, and scanned files and names are not uploaded during local use. If you mean whether it is impossible to delete something important, no cleanup tool can make that promise. Review selections before acting, and choose a reversible option or make a backup if you are unsure.

SquirrelDisk’s published materials describe protections against collecting system folders, the home folder, whole drives, and other essential locations. App and settings folders require extra confirmation. These are the developer’s descriptions of the app’s safeguards, not independently verified findings. The cited sources are official product materials; they do not amount to an independent security audit. The project publishes source code and releases on GitHub, which can help technically capable users inspect the project, but public source availability does not certify a particular downloaded build.
Does SquirrelDisk upload scan data?
The product page says scanned files and file names are never uploaded, no account is needed, and the app has no tracking. Treat those as statements from SquirrelDisk’s developer rather than independent privacy findings. For local scanning, the developer says the scan data stays on your computer: SquirrelDisk privacy and product information.

What changes when scanning over SSH?
With SSH, the app connects to the server you select. SquirrelDisk’s SSH guide says file names and sizes travel over that SSH connection to your local computer and stay there. The scan reflects the permissions of the SSH account, so it cannot show files that account cannot read. The guide says the helper is placed under ~/.cache/squirreldisk when possible, with standard commands as a fallback: SquirrelDisk SSH guide.
Can I delete something important by mistake?
Yes. Protections on what can be collected do not eliminate the risk of selecting a personal file or folder you meant to keep. A large item is not necessarily junk: it may contain work, application data, or files another program needs. Open the item’s location and identify it before choosing a cleanup action.

Use the action with the recovery options that fit your situation:
- Move to Trash or Recycle Bin: the cautious first choice when available. It leaves a recovery step before the bin is emptied.
- Back up, then delete: copy uncertain files to an external drive, another storage device, or cloud storage first. Keep the copy until you know the original is no longer needed.
- Delete permanently: removes the Trash/Recycle Bin recovery step. Use it only when you have identified the files and are comfortable losing them.
- Secure erase: attempts to make recovery harder by overwriting before removal. It is not a substitute for a backup or full-disk encryption.
For important or uncertain files, backing them up before deletion preserves more options than permanent deletion. An external drive is one optional backup destination; the product’s macOS guidance also discusses backing up before removing files: SquirrelDisk macOS guide.

What does secure erase do?
SquirrelDisk describes its optional secure erase as overwriting a file three times—first with zeros, then ones, then random data—renaming it, and removing it. That is the product’s stated procedure, not a universal guarantee that every trace of the data is unrecoverable.
Storage hardware and filesystems affect what overwriting can accomplish. SquirrelDisk’s Linux guide cautions that SSDs and Btrfs may retain old blocks and identifies LUKS full-disk encryption as the protection for data there. Its Windows guide similarly says SSD behavior makes BitLocker the stronger protection. Do not rely on secure erase as a replacement for full-disk encryption or assume that an overwrite works identically on every drive: SquirrelDisk Linux guide and SquirrelDisk Windows guide.

Windows says “Windows protected your PC”. Is that safe?
SquirrelDisk’s Windows guide says Windows may display this warning because the app is not code-signed. The warning reflects Windows’ handling of an unsigned app; it does not by itself prove that the app is safe or malicious. The project’s public source code lets people inspect the implementation, but source availability is not a security certification. If you choose to continue, make sure you obtained the app from the project’s official distribution, and do not treat dismissing the warning as proof of safety. See the official Windows guide.
What should I avoid deleting on each platform?
Windows
Do not manually delete hiberfil.sys or pagefile.sys; Windows manages these system files. The Windows guide also says online-only OneDrive files count as zero in SquirrelDisk because they do not occupy local disk space. A small displayed size does not necessarily mean the cloud copy is unimportant: Windows guide.
Linux
The Linux guide lists x86_64 AppImage and .tar.gz packages and says there is no ARM build. A scan reports only files readable by the current user, so protected directories may be incomplete. Do not remove files under /var/lib/docker by hand; the guide directs users to docker system prune instead. Review Docker’s own cleanup behavior before running it: Linux guide.

SquirrelDisk is distributed outside the App Store, so macOS may require you to approve opening it in Privacy & Security. That prompt is a distribution-related warning, not proof either that the app is safe or that it is malware. The developer’s guide covers the opening prompt and backup advice: macOS guide.
Why is remote SSH deletion riskier?
Local cleanup and remote cleanup are not interchangeable. SquirrelDisk’s SSH guide says remote files are deleted on the server with rm, and there is no remote Trash or undo. Before deleting remotely, verify the selected path and the SSH account, and back up the data you may need. A scan is limited to the SSH user’s permissions, but deletion still affects the server: SSH guide.
Quick Recap
A cautious cleanup checklist
- Scan first, decide second. Use the chart to locate large folders, then inspect the selected path and contents rather than judging by size alone.
- Identify anything you do not recognize. Leave system-managed or application data alone unless you know what it is and how to replace it.
- Back up uncertain or important files. Use an external drive or cloud storage if appropriate, and check that the copy is accessible.
- Choose the least irreversible action that works. Prefer Trash or Recycle Bin when available; reserve permanent deletion and secure erase for files you have verified.
- Apply platform-specific care. In particular, avoid manually removing Windows-managed files or Docker storage, and account for permissions when scanning Linux or SSH paths.
