Short answer: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is worth buying for crossover characters only if you first verify how your preferred racer is delivered. Some guests arrive in free updates, while others are tied to separately sold Season Pass content. The standard game is not an “everything included” crossover bundle.
The underlying racer is a stronger reason to buy than the guest list alone. Reviews praise its fast, chaotic races, track-changing portal mechanic, and vehicle customization, but report item-balance problems, online errors, a relatively small launch course selection, and extra cost as downloadable content accumulates. Buy the base game confidently if you would enjoy those systems even when a particular guest is unavailable; buy a pass only after confirming that it contains the character you actually want on your platform and in your region.

Quick verdict
| What matters most to you | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A specific guest racer | Check the exact update or pass before buying | Guest characters are split between free updates, the original Season Pass and Season Pass Two. |
| Fast, unpredictable kart racing | Base game is a reasonable purchase | Reviews highlight varied tracks, vehicle customization and the portal transition between course sections. |
| Every crossover in one purchase | Do not assume the standard edition provides this | SEGA distributes crossover content through different routes and sells passes separately. |
| Reliable competitive online play | Buy cautiously | PC Gamer reported online errors, while reviewers also criticized item balance. |
| Local multiplayer | Good fit if your group plays on one system | SEGA lists one to four local players; online play supports up to 12. |
The practical decision is therefore character-first, not roster-first: identify the racer, identify the delivery route, check the platform listing, then decide whether the racing itself justifies the remaining cost.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Free-update guests
SEGA announced Hatsune Miku, Joker and Ichiban Kasuga as racers delivered through free updates. A free update does not mean that every future guest is free; it applies to the characters SEGA specifically assigns to that update. Check the current game version and platform notes before assuming a newly announced guest is already available.
Content in the original Season Pass
SEGA’s purchase guide identifies the original Season Pass as a separate product containing crossover packs based on Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, PAC-MAN, Mega Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar Legends. These are themed packs, not a promise that every character associated with each franchise is included in every edition. Read the individual pack description for the exact racers and other items.
Season Pass Two is a different product
SEGA explicitly distinguishes the original Season Pass from Season Pass Two. They contain different content, so owning one does not establish ownership of the other. Storefront pages can show both products near each other; check the pass name, included packs and purchase history before paying again.
What the base game does and does not promise
The standard edition gives you the core Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds experience, but the available evidence does not establish an all-crossover-inclusive edition. A base-game listing may mention post-launch characters or show promotional artwork without granting every guest. Treat each character as an entitlement that needs verification.

Why the racing may be worth buying without the guests
Portal-based track changes
The defining feature highlighted by Tom’s Guide is a portal that sends racers to another section or course during a race. This can alter the route mid-event rather than simply presenting a fixed lap sequence. It gives races a deliberately unpredictable rhythm and is the clearest mechanical distinction from a conventional kart racer.
Chaotic races and customization
PC Gamer described the core racing as robust and fun, and praised track experimentation and vehicle customization. The appeal is not only speed: route changes, item attacks and vehicle setup combine to create races that can swing quickly. Mollie Taylor’s PC Gamer verdict called it “Heaps of fun and plenty chaotic” and “the closest we’ve ever gotten to Mario Kart on PC… for better and worse.” That is a qualified review judgment, not a guarantee of a particular performance on your hardware.
Local and online play
SEGA’s product information lists one to four local players and up to 12 online players. SEGA also announced cross-play across supported platforms. “Supported” matters: cross-play can depend on the platform, account requirements, region and current service configuration, so consult the platform listing and current game notices rather than assuming every combination works.
The trade-offs reviewers identified
- Item balance: PC Gamer and Tom’s Guide both raised concerns about items that can feel too powerful or unevenly distributed.
- Online reliability: PC Gamer reported online errors. That makes the game a less certain purchase if ranked or uninterrupted online sessions are your main reason to play.
- Launch course count: Tom’s Guide considered the number of courses available at launch comparatively limited.
- Unvoiced downloadable racers: PC Gamer noted that some DLC racers are not voiced, so a guest’s presence does not guarantee the same presentation as a launch character.
- Accumulating DLC cost: PC Gamer said the growing cost of add-on content makes an unconditional recommendation harder.
These are review observations from dated coverage, not a substitute for a current service-status report. They are most relevant when deciding whether the base game remains attractive after removing the crossover novelty.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

How to check whether your favorite character is included
Use this sequence before purchasing a game, bundle or pass.
- Write down the exact character. Do not start with a franchise name. A pack based on a series can contain a limited selection of racers and may include additional cosmetics instead of every recognizable character.
- Classify the delivery route. Determine whether SEGA announced that character as a free-update racer, part of the original Season Pass, or part of Season Pass Two. If the announcement or listing does not identify the route, do not infer it from screenshots or trailer appearances.
- Open the storefront for your platform. Check the PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Steam or Epic Games listing that matches your system. Confirm the edition name, included add-ons and any platform-specific restrictions.
- Check region and current price. Prices, bundles, taxes, stock and availability can vary by country and can change after publication. A pass shown in one region is not evidence that the same offer exists in another.
- Check your purchase history. If you already own a bundle or subscription entitlement, verify whether it includes the relevant pass. The original Season Pass and Season Pass Two are not interchangeable.
- Calculate the total spend. Add the current base-game price to any required pass or individual pack. Compare that total with a bundle only after checking that the bundle contains the same content and is not merely a different edition of the base game.
- Use a demo if it is currently offered. SEGA announced a free demo for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games on October 23, 2025. Demo availability can change, so search your live storefront. A demo can answer whether the handling, camera and portal transitions work for you, but it may not include paid crossover racers.
Base game, physical copy or digital bundle?
| Purchase path | What to verify | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Base game only | Platform edition, included launch roster and current update requirements | You like the racing systems and can live without a particular paid guest. |
| Base game plus individual pack | Exact character, pack contents and whether the pack is compatible with your edition | You want one crossover and do not need the broader pass catalog. |
| Original Season Pass | Its listed Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, PAC-MAN, Mega Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar Legends packs | You want several of those themes and the combined price is lower than buying them separately. |
| Season Pass Two | Its separate content list and whether it duplicates anything you already own | You specifically want characters or packs assigned to the second pass. |
| Physical edition | Region, included code, code expiry and whether downloadable content is on a separate voucher | You prefer resale or a disc, provided the guest content is not locked to an unused code. |
| Digital edition | Account region, storage space, refund rules and bundle entitlement | You want immediate download and automatic access to updates on one account. |
Neither physical nor digital format automatically includes all crossover content. The decisive text is the edition and add-on list shown for your account and platform.
What the dated numbers actually tell you
Sales and ratings
In an announcement dated October 23, 2025, SEGA said Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds had sold more than one million units worldwide, counting physical units and digital downloads across platforms. The same announcement described an “Overwhelmingly Positive” Steam rating and a Metacritic user score above 9.0 for Steam and PlayStation 5 at that time. Those are dated snapshots, not current live scores; ratings can move as more players review the game.

Review scores
PC Gamer’s January 16, 2026 review awarded a score of 79. Its praise for racing and customization sits alongside the criticisms of online errors, item balance, unvoiced DLC racers and cumulative DLC cost. Tom’s Guide’s September 18, 2025 review emphasized multiplayer and the track-switching mechanic while noting the limited launch course selection and overpowering items. The different dates explain why neither review should be read as a live statement about today’s roster or service status.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy it for crossover characters?
Buy the base game first when the racing is the real attraction
If your priority is high-speed kart racing, local sessions or experimenting with vehicles and changing routes, the base game can stand on its own. The crossover characters then become a bonus rather than the sole justification for spending. This is the safest approach when you are unsure which pass contains a favorite guest.
Buy a paid pass when several included themes matter
A pass is easier to justify when you genuinely want multiple packs in its list. For example, someone interested in several of the Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, PAC-MAN, Mega Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Avatar Legends additions may obtain more value from the original Season Pass than from one isolated character. Confirm the exact racer list first; franchise branding alone is not a complete contents description.
Wait when one character is your only reason
If one guest is the entire point of the purchase, do not buy a pass speculatively. Find the character’s announcement or storefront entry, confirm whether the content is free or paid, and verify that the required update or pack is available for your platform. If the character is not obtainable in the edition you can use, the game cannot satisfy that specific goal regardless of its other strengths.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Be cautious if online competition is essential
Up to 12-player online races and announced cross-play are meaningful advantages, but reported online errors make reliability a buying consideration. A player who mainly races locally can treat those issues as secondary; a player buying for nightly online competition should check current community reports and service notices before committing to a pass.
Common purchasing mistakes
- Assuming “crossover” means “all guests included.” The roster is distributed across free updates and separate passes.
- Confusing the two Season Pass products. Season Pass Two is not simply a renamed version of the original pass.
- Buying by franchise instead of character. A themed pack can have a narrower roster than the franchise’s full cast.
- Ignoring platform and region. Availability, pricing and bundle contents can differ between storefronts.
- Using an old review as a current roster list. The 23-character launch description and projected total of 56 are historical context, not a live count.
- Counting a trailer appearance as ownership. Promotional footage does not replace the edition’s entitlement list.
- Paying twice for overlapping content. Check your account library before purchasing a pass or bundle.
- Expecting every DLC racer to be voiced. PC Gamer specifically reported that some downloadable racers are not voiced.
Final buying decision
For crossover fans, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a conditional recommendation rather than an automatic yes. The game has a distinctive portal-based race format, customization, local multiplayer for up to four and online play for up to 12, and reviewers found substantial fun in its chaotic racing. Those qualities justify the base game for players who enjoy kart racing independently of guest characters.
The guest-focused purchase requires more care. Hatsune Miku, Joker and Ichiban Kasuga were announced as free-update racers, while the original Season Pass covers several named crossover packs and Season Pass Two contains different content. Confirm the exact character, route, platform, region and total price before buying. If that checklist succeeds and you also accept the reported online, item-balance, launch-course and unvoiced-DLC caveats, the crossover content can be a worthwhile reason to join the game. If the character is unavailable or requires more spending than you are comfortable with, buy only when the underlying racing itself earns the purchase.
