Yes. SingleFileZ’s self-extracting file feature is now part of SingleFile, which its official website describes as free and open source. The official project sources reviewed do not list a paid tier or paid upgrade for that feature. SingleFileZ itself says it has been completely merged into SingleFile. What happened to SingleFileZ?
SingleFileZ was a browser extension for saving a web page as a self-extracting, ZIP-style HTML file. Its repository now says, “SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile,” and points users to SingleFile’s File format option to save pages in that format. SingleFile also supports destinations such as Google Drive, Amazon S3, GitHub and WebDAV. Those are optional integrations; their availability in SingleFile does not establish that the third-party storage services are free or that they are paid SingleFileZ features. How to use the self-extracting format in SingleFile
- Install or open SingleFile, the project into which SingleFileZ was merged.
- Open SingleFile’s options and find File format.
- Select the self-extracting file format, then save a page using SingleFile.
- If you have existing SingleFileZ settings, use the repository’s guidance to import them into SingleFile. (SingleFileZ repository)

Self-extracting files: compatibility and trade-offs
Compared with ordinary SingleFile HTML, the self-extracting format is compressed and can be unzipped to recover its resources. Ordinary SingleFile HTML can be viewed without running JavaScript; self-extracting files require JavaScript to open. (SingleFile repository; SingleFileZ FAQ)
Opening a saved file locally has browser-specific caveats. The SingleFileZ FAQ says Chrome may require a command-line switch or the extension to open local files, and notes that Firefox and Safari have their own local-file restrictions. The FAQ describes processing as happening in the browser and says SingleFileZ does not itself upload saved data to third-party servers. It also notes that default settings prioritize smaller output and can slow saving; turning off some cleanup options may improve speed, but disabling frame or deferred-image handling can leave resources out of the saved page. Mozilla’s SingleFileZ add-on listing identifies the license as AGPL v3 and shows a last update date of February 15, 2024.
