How to Use SingleFileZ in Firefox to Archive a Webpage

Use SingleFileZ to save a Firefox webpage as one self-extracting HTML/ZIP file, with guidance on the project’s migration, options, browser limits, and slow saves.

SingleFileZ saves a webpage from Firefox as one self-extracting HTML file that is also a valid ZIP archive containing page resources. Wait for the page to finish loading, then click the SingleFileZ toolbar button and let it complete. However, the project maintainer says SingleFileZ has been merged into SingleFile; if you are following the maintained path, use SingleFile’s “File format” options to save self-extracting files.

Check SingleFileZ’s status before installing

The project maintainer’s repository says, “SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile.” The Firefox Add-ons listing still shows SingleFileZ version 1.4.45, last updated February 15, 2024. That listing and the maintainer’s migration notice coexist; the listed version should not be mistaken for a current release. Check the current Firefox Add-ons availability if you want the standalone extension. To follow the maintained path, install or use SingleFile and look for its “File format” options to save self-extracting files. The project repository has the migration notice, and the Firefox Add-ons listing describes the extension’s workflow.

Save the current webpage with SingleFileZ

  1. Open the webpage in Firefox and wait until it has fully loaded. Pages still loading or populating content may not have all their resources ready to save.
  2. Click the SingleFileZ button in Firefox’s extension toolbar.
  3. Wait for processing and for Firefox to finish saving the file to its configured download location. If you need to stop an in-progress save, click the toolbar button again while processing.

The saved result is a single HTML file that is also a valid ZIP containing page resources. It is intended to open as a webpage while keeping its resources together in the archive.

Use the keyboard shortcut or save other tabs and page content

SingleFileZ’s customizable shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+Y. It can save the current tab or selected tabs. The extension’s context menu provides more specific capture choices:

  • Save the current tab, selected content, a selected frame, or a selected link.
  • Process selected tabs, unpinned tabs, or all tabs in one action.
  • Enable auto-save after pages load for the current tab, unpinned tabs, or all tabs.

To open the context menu, right-click the extension toolbar button or the webpage. These choices are useful when you need a particular section or frame rather than the whole page, or want to archive several tabs.

Choose a save destination

Right-click the toolbar button and choose “Manage extension” to open the options page. The listing names optional destinations under “Destination,” including Google Drive and GitHub. These are optional settings; the basic workflow saves to Firefox’s configured download location.

The maintainer says SingleFileZ processes the page in the browser and does not upload data to third-party servers. Saving can nevertheless download page resources—including images, CSS, frame contents, and fonts—even when those resources are not displayed or cached. Using an optional Google Drive or GitHub destination is a separate choice from the default local save.

Open the archive and understand browser limits

JavaScript must be enabled to open saved pages, according to the maintainer FAQ. Local-file behavior also depends on the browser:

  • Firefox: the FAQ says saved files can be viewed from the filesystem.
  • Safari: the FAQ’s instructions refer to “Disable Local File Restrictions” in the Develop menu.
  • Chrome: the FAQ says SingleFileZ must be installed to open these files from the filesystem.

The FAQ says these local-file restrictions do not apply when the saved page is hosted on a server. Do not assume identical local-opening behavior across browsers.

Some pages cannot be processed because browsers block extensions from running on certain pages for security reasons. If a browser-controlled or otherwise restricted page will not save, that may be an access restriction rather than a mistake in your steps.

Make slow saves faster without losing needed content

The maintainer says the default settings are optimized to produce small pages, which can make saving considerably slower. To reduce processing time and CPU use, open the extension’s options page and consider disabling:

  • HTML content > remove hidden elements
  • Stylesheets > remove unused styles

These settings may speed processing, but changing capture options can affect what is preserved. The maintainer also suggests disabling HTML content > remove frames or Images > save deferred images as possible ways to reduce work; the FAQ warns that doing so may leave frames or images missing. Keep those options enabled when completeness matters more than speed.

Or skip the browser setup

SingleFileZ is for making a local archive. If you need a screenshot or PDF instead, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; it does not replace a self-contained HTML archive.

cURL example, adapted to capture the page you want:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options and authentication. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. Frequently Asked Questions

Can SingleFileZ save more than one tab at a time?

Yes. Its context menu can process selected tabs, unpinned tabs, or all tabs in one action.

Can I read a saved page without an internet connection?

A local archive can be read offline when its required resources are included and the browser can open the file; browser-specific local-file restrictions still apply.
