Is ScreenshotMachine CLI Free for Commercial Use?

ScreenshotMachine’s terms permit commercial use of API-captured screenshots but separately restrict marketing use without express written consent. Its docs show curl/API use, not a separate CLI license.

In brief: ScreenshotMachine’s terms allow screenshots captured through its API to be viewed, downloaded, and modified for personal and commercial purposes. But the same terms prohibit using the API or website for marketing without ScreenshotMachine’s express written consent. Its official documentation shows command-line use through HTTP requests with curl; the reviewed official materials do not establish a separate product or license called “ScreenshotMachine CLI.”

What the commercial-use terms allow—and restrict

ScreenshotMachine’s terms say users may “view, download and modify thumbnails and/or screenshots captured using the API for personal and commercial purposes.” That permission applies to the captured screenshots. It should not be read as blanket permission for every way of using ScreenshotMachine.

The same terms separately state: “You must not use this website for any purposes related to marketing without the express written consent of www.screenshotmachine.com.” In other words, commercial use of screenshot output and marketing-related use of the service are distinct questions. If your workflow involves marketing, get written consent rather than assuming the commercial-output permission covers it.

The terms page displays a last-update date of July 22, 2020, and says the terms can be revised. Check the current terms and ask ScreenshotMachine to confirm how they apply to your intended use before relying on them.

Is there an official ScreenshotMachine CLI?

The official API documentation describes an HTTP GET service, provides a curl example, and says a customer key is required after signup. That supports making command-line requests to the API; it does not establish a separate official CLI program or a distinct CLI license.

ScreenshotMachine’s GitHub organization lists API code examples, including a bash/curl repository. Its Node.js repository describes itself as an example client and labels that repository’s code MIT licensed. That code license applies to the example repository, not automatically to use of the hosted ScreenshotMachine service.

For the documented API approach, see ScreenshotMachine’s API documentation. For a separately distributed CLI tool—or if you mean a third-party command-line client—confirm the tool’s own license and ask ScreenshotMachine whether its service terms cover your use.

Does ScreenshotMachine’s free trial cover commercial use?

The homepage advertises a free screenshot API trial and says no credit card is required. The reviewed official material does not state the trial’s quota or duration, nor does the free-trial claim settle every commercial-use case. Do not treat it as unlimited free service or as a waiver of the marketing restriction.

Before building a business workflow around the trial, verify the current allowance and ask whether your specific use is permitted. In particular, explain whether screenshots will appear in marketing materials, be used to support marketing services, or be generated by a separately distributed tool.

What to confirm before using it at work

  1. Identify the method. Distinguish documented curl requests to the API from a separate CLI application or third-party client.
  2. Describe the output use. The terms’ commercial permission refers to API-captured screenshots. Explain where and how you will use those images.
  3. Check for marketing activity. If the workflow is related to marketing, request express written consent under the terms’ stated restriction.
  4. Verify trial limits. Ask for the current free-trial quota, duration, and any applicable volume or rate limits; the reviewed homepage does not specify them.
  5. Keep the answer in writing. If the distinction affects a launch, client commitment, or distributed tool, retain ScreenshotMachine’s written clarification.

Read the ScreenshotMachine terms and conditions and API documentation directly; the terms page’s displayed update date is July 22, 2020.

An alternative to consider: ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its stated differentiators include removing cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, while billing only clean shots; its response headers identify page verdict and billing status. The service also offers an MCP server for AI agents. Those are product facts, not a resolution of ScreenshotMachine’s terms: check the terms of whichever service you choose.

Or skip the browser setup

Make one GET request with a URL. Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your ScreenshotNeo key; this example saves the response as a WebP image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
  • Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed.
  • An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.
  • 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
