In practical terms, a mixed PC group can buy the game from different PC stores and still play together. A mixed-console group can combine Xbox and PlayStation players. A group that includes both a PC user and a console user must choose separate sessions or have everyone play on the same type of platform.

How Satisfactory crossplay is divided
Steam and Epic on PC
Steam and Epic PC editions are interoperable for multiplayer. The storefront used to purchase the game does not create a separate player pool. A Steam player can invite or join an Epic player, and the same principle applies when connecting to a dedicated server.
This is useful for groups that acquired Satisfactory during different promotions or prefer different launchers. The important limitation is that this interoperability applies to the PC editions; it does not bridge PC with Xbox or PlayStation.

Xbox and PlayStation on console
Console crossplay uses Epic Online Services behind the scenes. Each player links an Epic Games account from Satisfactory’s in-game Online Settings menu, then uses Epic’s friend relationship to find the other player. The console network account alone is not enough for this crossplay path.
After the accounts are linked, the host starts a cross-play session. Other players open Join Game and select the session when it appears. The exact console dashboard wording can vary by system, but the account-linking and in-game session steps are the same pattern.
Why PC and console are separate
Coffee Stain Studios’ support explanation is that the separation is intended to give console players a stable, consistent factory experience. The official statement says: “No, to ensure that console players can rely on a stable, consistent factory experience, we decided to keep the two ecosystems (Console and PC) separate.”
The official Wiki provides the practical context: PC players can change settings, use mods, and use save editors in ways that are not available or controlled in the same way on consoles. Keeping the ecosystems apart reduces the chance that a modified or unstable PC session will affect a console player’s save or multiplayer experience. This is a product-design decision, not a missing setting that can be enabled in the menu.

How to set up Xbox–PlayStation crossplay
Use this sequence when every participant is on a supported console edition.
- Open Online Settings. On each console, launch Satisfactory and open the in-game Online Settings menu.
- Link an Epic Games account. Follow the account-linking prompt for every player. Satisfactory uses Epic Online Services for console multiplayer, so each participant needs an Epic account linked to the game.
- Create Epic friendships. Add the other players as friends through Epic. If using a console interface is inconvenient, the Epic Games Launcher can be used to manage the friend list.
- Start the session. The player with the save selects the option to host a cross-play session.
- Join from the browser. The other player opens the in-game Join Game menu and looks for the host’s session.
- Check privacy controls if the session is missing. The official FAQ says profile and session privacy must allow other people to view the profile. Change those settings, restart the game if necessary, and search the Join Game list again.
The host’s save remains the authority for a normal multiplayer session. If the host closes the game or loses the connection, other players cannot continue in that session until the host returns. For a group that needs the world available without the original host, a dedicated server is the alternative—but it requires PC players.
What the Epic account does
The Epic account is the identity layer used to locate console friends across Xbox and PlayStation. It does not convert a console copy into a PC copy, and it does not make a console eligible to join a dedicated server. It simply enables the supported console-to-console crossplay route.

When a normal host is enough
Use a player-hosted session when the same person will usually be online, the group plays at agreed times, and nobody wants to administer another machine. It is the simplest choice for a small group testing the game together. The host’s computer runs both the game and the multiplayer session, so performance and availability depend on that machine and connection.
When a dedicated server is worthwhile
A dedicated server makes sense when players have different schedules, want to leave production lines running, or need a world that is available while the original creator is offline. The server is a separate process rather than a player’s graphical game session. Players connect as clients, and the server keeps the factory world available as long as its process and network remain online.

Dedicated server requirements and supported systems
Satisfactory dedicated servers are a desktop-PC feature. The documented operating systems are 64-bit Windows and Linux. A server can be installed on a machine dedicated to the task or on a spare PC that remains powered on. The machine needs broadband internet, and a home connection may require port forwarding or a VPN before players outside the local network can reach it.
- Operating system: 64-bit Windows or a supported Linux distribution.
- Internet: Broadband service suitable for the number of players and the server’s traffic.
- Availability: The machine must stay online whenever the group expects to connect.
- Storage: Enough space for the server installation, configuration data, and saved worlds; leave room for backups and updates.
- Network access: Router and firewall rules may need to be adjusted. Some home networks are easier to reach through a VPN.
- Client compatibility: Keep the server on the same game branch and version as the clients. Before changing versions or server settings, make a backup of the save.
Exact storage figures, Windows releases, Linux distributions, and networking details can change with the server documentation. Check the current dedicated-server requirements for the release you are installing rather than assuming that a configuration from an older update still applies.
Dedicated server installation: a practical sequence
1. Choose the machine and network location
Select a Windows or Linux computer that can remain powered on. A home desktop can work, but consider its sleep settings, automatic reboots, upload bandwidth, and physical access. If the machine sits behind a router, decide whether you will expose the required service through port forwarding or place the players on a private VPN.
2. Install the server files
The documented installation routes are the Steam client, SteamCMD, and the Epic Games Store. In the Steam client, the dedicated server is listed as a tool. SteamCMD is useful for a command-line or headless machine. The Epic Games Store is another supported source for the server software.
Choose one route and install the server on the machine that will host it. Do not install only the ordinary game client and expect it to behave as a persistent server; the dedicated-server package is a separate installation.
3. Create and configure the server
Start the server once so it can create its configuration and save directories. Set the server name, access controls, and world or save selection according to the current documentation for your release. Use a strong, private password if the server is reachable from the public internet, and restrict administrative access to the people who need it.

Keep the configuration and save files in a location that is easy to back up. Avoid editing files while the server is actively writing to them. Stop the process cleanly before copying or replacing a save.
4. Configure firewall and router access
Allow the dedicated-server application through the operating system firewall. If players are outside your local network, forward the server’s documented ports from the router to the host machine, or use a VPN that places all players on the same private network. The required ports and transport details are release-specific, so copy them from the current dedicated-server documentation instead of guessing.
Test from a second network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than relying only on a connection from inside the same home network. A local test can succeed even when the router blocks outside traffic.

Once the process is running and reachable, have PC players use the game’s multiplayer or server-connection interface to find or enter the server. Steam and Epic clients can connect to the same PC server, so players do not need to buy the game from the server’s storefront. The server itself does not make console clients compatible.
6. Maintain versions and backups
Update the server and clients deliberately rather than allowing one side to move to a different branch without the other. Before an update, configuration change, or save conversion, stop the server and copy the save and configuration directories to a separate location. Keep more than one dated backup so a newly introduced problem does not overwrite the only known-good copy.

No. Dedicated servers are supported for the PC editions only. Xbox and PlayStation releases cannot host the server software and cannot connect to a PC dedicated server. Linking an Epic account does not change that restriction; Epic identity is used for console crossplay, while dedicated-server access remains a PC feature.

If a group includes console players, use a normal console-hosted crossplay session for Xbox–PlayStation play. If the group needs a persistent dedicated world, every participant must use a compatible PC edition.
Troubleshooting common crossplay problems
The console session does not appear
- Confirm that every player has linked an Epic Games account in Online Settings.
- Verify that the players are Epic friends, not merely friends on the Xbox or PlayStation network.
- Ask the host to confirm that the session was started as a cross-play session.
- Review profile and session privacy settings. The official FAQ requires settings that let other people view the profile.
- Close and relaunch the game after changing account or privacy settings, then search Join Game again.
A PC player cannot join a console friend
This is an ecosystem boundary, not an invitation failure. PC-to-console multiplayer is not supported, so changing Epic friendships, router settings, or privacy controls will not create a compatible session. The players must use matching platform ecosystems.
Steam and Epic PC players cannot connect
- Confirm that both players are on PC editions and that the server or host session is actually running.
- Check that the clients and, if applicable, the dedicated server use the same branch and game version.
- For a self-hosted server, check the host firewall, router forwarding, and VPN configuration.
- Test the server address from outside the host’s local network to identify a router or firewall problem.
- Review the server log and configuration after stopping the process safely; do not overwrite the save while troubleshooting.
The dedicated server disappears after a restart
Verify that the server process is launching with the intended configuration and save location, and that the machine is not sleeping or changing networks. A service or scheduled-start arrangement can keep the process available, but configure it only after the basic installation works and keep a manual recovery path.
A save behaves differently after an update
Stop the server, restore the last known-good backup if necessary, and align the server and all clients to the same supported branch. Do not experiment on the only copy of a valuable factory. Keep dated backups before future updates so you can roll back without losing progress.

The practical answer
Satisfactory is cross-platform only within its two supported ecosystems. Steam and Epic work together on PC; Xbox and PlayStation work together on console. PC and console do not share multiplayer sessions. Dedicated servers add persistence for PC groups and accept both PC storefronts, but they do not expand crossplay to consoles. For console friends, the essential setup is linked Epic accounts, Epic friendships, a cross-play host session, and privacy settings that permit profile visibility. For PC groups that need an always-available factory, use a supported 64-bit Windows or Linux machine, install the dedicated-server package, configure network access, and maintain matching versions and backups.
