The fastest way to start modding Hytale is to create a small Asset Pack in the in-game Asset Editor, test it in a disposable local world, and only move to a Java plugin when you need server-side logic such as commands, events, systems, or custom behaviour. Hytale is designed around host-side modding: the server or world host loads the modification, while players generally do not install a separate modded client.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Hytale servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
This guide follows that beginner-to-advanced path, explains where files belong, shows how to prepare a test server, and covers the current CurseForge publishing workflow. Hytale remains in Early Access, so check the documentation for your exact release before copying code or configuration from an older tutorial.

Hytale’s official documentation hub describes itself as the place for running Hytale servers and building mods. Its current documentation release is labelled 0.7.2 and includes a creating-content guide, a Hytale Generator reference, Java API documentation for plugin developers, and an Asset Reference generated from the server’s codecs.
The fundamental design choice is server-side. Hypixel Studios Technical Director Kevin “Slikey” Carstens has stated: “All modding in Hytale is based on the host of the server or host of the game.” The studio has also said it does not intend to support client mods. In practical terms, you normally modify the world or server that hosts the game; players joining that host should not need to maintain a different modded client for every server.
#1 Best Overall
- Polished core systems
- Exploration
- Flexible combat
- Robust building
That architecture affects installation and troubleshooting:
- The host must have the relevant Asset Pack or plugin in its files.
- A player joining a modded server generally does not install the same modification separately on the client.
- A mismatch between client and server protocol versions can prevent a connection even when the mod itself is correct.
- Testing on the host is more important than testing only in a local editor.
Hytale’s tools and exposed systems are still developing. Hypixel Studios acknowledges gaps in tooling, documentation, and available systems, and says some tools are rough or inconsistent. Treat examples written for an earlier Early Access patch as potentially obsolete.
Asset Pack or Java plugin: choose the smallest tool that works
An Asset Pack is the best first project for most beginners. It is a folder or ZIP containing assets and normally a manifest.json. Packs can override base-game assets or add new ones. The in-game Asset Editor creates the required manifest and folder structure, reducing the most common setup errors.
A Java plugin is appropriate when you need executable server logic rather than asset data. Plugins can add commands, respond to events, register systems, and use the Hytale server API to extend vanilla functionality. CurseForge defines these as mods written in Java that use the game API.
| Decision point | Asset Pack | Java plugin |
|---|---|---|
| Typical first skill | In-game Asset Editor; basic file handling is useful | Java, build tooling, and the Hytale Java API |
| What it changes | Content and configuration: models, textures, worlds, recipes, blocks, items, or other exposed assets | Server logic: commands, events, systems, rules, and behaviour |
| Where it runs | On the host or server that loads the world | On the host or dedicated server |
| Debugging burden | Usually lower; inspect the manifest, asset path, and override order first | Higher; Java compilation, API changes, logs, lifecycle issues, and runtime errors all matter |
| Update sensitivity | Changes when asset schemas or referenced assets change | Changes when the server API, dependency version, or protocol changes |
| Best first project | Yes: one visible asset change in a disposable world | After you have a working server and a clear need for code |
Where Early Plugins fit
CurseForge also identifies “Early Plugins.” These operate outside the standard plugin environment and can perform low-level class transformations. That is an advanced escape hatch, not a sensible beginner route. Start with an Asset Pack, then a standard Java plugin; consider an Early Plugin only when the normal API cannot provide the required capability and you understand the maintenance risk.
Prepare before creating your first project
You do not need Java to make an Asset Pack. You do need Java when you build a plugin, and you should use the Java version and build instructions specified by the current Hytale server manual rather than assuming a version from an old video.

Beginner prerequisites
- A current Hytale installation and a user account that can launch the game.
- Access to the in-game Asset Editor.
- A separate test world that contains no irreplaceable builds or saves.
- Permission to edit the host’s Hytale user-data or server directory.
- A backup routine before experimenting.
Plugin prerequisites
- A Java development environment and a build tool such as Maven, configured according to the current server manual.
- The Hytale server dependency, documented as
com.hypixel.hytale:Server. - A local or dedicated test server whose client and server use the exact same protocol version.
- A text editor or Java IDE, plus access to server logs while testing.
The manual says the HytaleServer JAR will be published to a Maven repository for modding projects. Dependency versions change during Early Access; copy the repository and version shown in the manual for the patchline you are targeting instead of hard-coding a version from an unrelated tutorial.
Create an Asset Pack in the in-game editor
The editor is recommended because a pack’s manifest and directory layout must be correct. You can work with a ZIP or an unpacked folder later, but the editor gives you a valid starting structure.
- Open the Asset Editor. Start Hytale and use the in-game editor to create a new Asset Pack rather than making an empty folder by hand.
- Fill in the manifest details. Give the pack a clear group, name, version, description, and author. These values are stored in
manifest.jsonand will identify the project when you test or distribute it. - Make one change. Add or modify one asset first. A single texture, model, recipe, block, or other supported asset gives you a small, observable test and makes failures easier to isolate.
- Save the pack. Save it to the world’s
modsfolder for a world-specific experiment, or copy it to the user-level Mods folder when you want it available to other worlds. - Enable it for the world. From the New World menu, open the world’s Options area and enable the pack before creating or loading the test world.
- Test in a disposable world. Confirm the changed asset appears, behaves as expected, and does not produce errors before adding a second change.
Assets inside a pack override base-game assets when they target the same asset, while a pack can also add new assets. That makes override projects powerful but easy to break: keep a record of every path you replace and test after each change.
Use a manifest that remains understandable
Use a descriptive name rather than a generic label such as “Test.” Increase the version when you make a meaningful change, and describe compatibility or known limitations in the description. A future collaborator—or your own future self—should be able to identify the pack without opening every file.
Do not manually rearrange the generated folders until you understand the Asset Reference and the editor’s conventions. A valid-looking ZIP can still fail if a directory is nested one level too deep or a filename does not match the asset key expected by the server.
Where Hytale mods are installed
For a normal Windows installation, the official guide gives these locations:
Rank #3
- 5-Minute Dungeon is the most fun you can have in 5 minutes! You'll need teamwork to defeat each dungeon in only 5 minutes, and then take on the next intense challenge. Defeat all 6 bosses to win!
- Now with 25 more cards and the extra-challenging Dungeon Master: Final Form boss!
- Featuring a free timer app for Android and Apple devices, with six different themed narrators!
- Easy to learn, quick to teach: Match your cards to each symbol in the dungeon deck to win! 5-Minute Dungeon is perfect for teams of 2-5 players aged 8+.
- Includes: 275 Cards, 5 Double-Sided Hero Mats (10 Heroes Total), 3 Double-Sided Boss Mats (6 Bosses Total)
- User-wide Mods folder:
C:Users<user>AppDataRoamingHytaleUserDataMods - Per-world mods folder: a path such as
...SavesNew World 5mods
Use the per-world folder when a pack is relevant only to one world. Use the user-level Mods folder when the pack must be available to multiple worlds. The in-game editor can save to the appropriate location, which is safer than guessing the path.
Only the server or world host has to download Asset Packs and Mods. If you are joining someone else’s server, the host’s installation is the one that matters. For a dedicated server, place the pack where that server’s documented mod layout expects it and restart or reload according to the current server instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the pack does not appear
- Confirm that the folder is exactly the host’s Hytale user-data or server folder, not a similarly named installation directory.
- Check that the pack contains
manifest.jsonat the expected level rather than inside an extra nested folder. - Verify that the pack is enabled in the world’s New World → Options area.
- Check spelling and capitalization of asset paths.
- Remove the latest change and retest the previous working version.
- Read the server or world log for a manifest, codec, or asset-loading error.
Test safely in a local world
Start with a world that can be deleted. Early Access tools can fail in ways that damage a save or make recovery difficult. Hypixel Studios explicitly advises: “Take frequent backups of your savegames and important creations.” Back up before installing a new pack, changing an override, or testing code that writes world data.
A repeatable local test loop
- Copy the working world or save it outside the active Hytale data directory.
- Install or update only one pack.
- Enable the pack in the New World menu’s Options area.
- Load the world and test the exact asset or behaviour you changed.
- Check the log for warnings and errors, even if the visible result looks correct.
- Close the game cleanly, reopen the world, and test again. Some loading problems appear only after a restart.
- Record the pack version, Hytale release, change made, and result.
Do not use a valuable long-running survival world as the first test target. Keep a known-good copy so you can distinguish a mod problem from a corrupted or incompatible save.
Move from assets to a Java plugin
Choose a plugin when the required feature cannot be expressed as data or asset configuration. Examples include a command that performs an action, an event listener that reacts to player activity, a system that runs on a schedule, or rules that require state and conditional logic.
Build against the current server API
- Read the current Java API and server manual. Identify the API entry points and lifecycle expected by your target release.
- Create a Maven project. Add the Hytale server dependency documented as
com.hypixel.hytale:Server, using the version and repository shown in the current manual. - Implement one narrow feature. A single command or event handler is easier to compile, load, and diagnose than a complete game system.
- Build the plugin. Resolve dependency and Java-version errors before copying anything to the server.
- Install it on a test server. Use a server that has no irreplaceable worlds, and keep the plugin version visible in its metadata or filename.
- Read startup logs. Confirm that the plugin loads, its entry point runs, and no API or class-loading exception appears.
- Exercise the feature. Test normal input, invalid input, reconnects, restarts, and the absence of expected entities or data.
Do not infer plugin APIs from a pre-release snippet without checking the current reference. Early Access can change names, lifecycle timing, codecs, and exposed systems. A plugin that compiled last month may need source or dependency changes after a patchline update.

Set up a dedicated Hytale test server
The current server manual documents three ways to obtain server files: copy them from the launcher, use the authenticated Hytale Downloader CLI, or bootstrap from HytaleServer.jar. The downloader can fetch the latest release, print its version, select a pre-release patchline, and write files to a specified path.
Bootstrap sequence from the server JAR
- Put
HytaleServer.jarin an empty directory. - Run
java -jar HytaleServer.jar --bootstrap. - Authenticate when prompted with
/auth login device. - Run
/update setupor/update download. - Confirm that the resulting layout contains
Assets.zip, launcher scripts, and aServerdirectory containingHytaleServer.jarand configuration files. - Install your Asset Pack or plugin in the location expected by that server layout, then launch the server using its supplied script or the command documented for your release.
The exact downloader flags and available patchline options can change. Use the current manual’s syntax, particularly when selecting a pre-release line or writing to a custom path.
Keep protocol versions aligned
The server manual is unambiguous: “Client and server must be on the exact same protocol version.” Record the server version before diagnosing a mod. If the client updated but the server did not, update or roll back through the documented route before changing plugin code.
The manual also documents automatic updates that preserve configuration, saves, and mods when the expected folder layout is used. Back up first, keep custom files in the documented locations, and verify after an update that the server loaded the same mod versions.

The world loads but the change is invisible
- Confirm the pack is enabled for that world, not merely present in a folder.
- Verify the asset path and key against the Asset Reference.
- Check whether another pack loaded later overrides your change.
- Test a newly created disposable world to rule out cached or previously saved asset state.
The server refuses to start after a plugin update
- Restore the last known-good plugin JAR.
- Read the first exception in the log; later errors may be consequences rather than causes.
- Check the Java runtime, Maven dependency version, and server patchline.
- Remove recently changed API calls and rebuild a minimal version.
Players cannot connect
- Compare the client and server protocol versions exactly.
- Confirm that the host, rather than each player, has the required mod files.
- Restart the server after changing its mods directory.
- Test with only the server’s base files and one mod to isolate a conflict.
A save or creation is at risk
Stop experimenting on the original. Shut down cleanly, copy the backup to a separate location, and continue with a duplicate. Because Hypixel Studios reports crashes that can cause data loss, frequent backups are part of the normal Hytale modding workflow, not an optional emergency measure.
Publish and distribute a Hytale mod
CurseForge’s Hytale FAQ says creators make mods with the in-game Asset Editor and submit them to CurseForge for moderation after signing in. Users can discover, install, and update Hytale mods through the CurseForge website and application. The FAQ currently states that Hytale mods are supported on PC.
Best Value
Prepare the release
- Finish a clean test. Test the pack or plugin on the target Hytale release and, for a plugin, on a dedicated server.
- Set a clear identity. Use a readable name, version, author, description, and a short explanation of what the mod changes.
- Package the correct files. Include the generated manifest and required folders; remove temporary backups, source archives, logs, and unrelated experiments.
- Document compatibility. State the Hytale release or patchline tested, whether the project is an Asset Pack or Java plugin, and any known limitations.
- Sign in and submit. Upload through CurseForge’s Hytale project flow and wait for moderation.
- Maintain releases. When Hytale changes an asset schema or API, publish a compatible update rather than silently replacing files under the same version.
CurseForge reports more than 178,000 modders and over 26 million monthly users in 2026. These are platform-reported audience figures, not an independent estimate of Hytale’s modding market. They indicate potential reach, not a guaranteed download or conversion rate.
Private-server commerce
CurseForge’s Hytale FAQ says Tebex is partnering with Hytale to power stores that can sell tiers, roles, cosmetics, and similar offerings for private servers. Before planning a paid server store, verify the current fees, geographic availability, eligibility rules, tax obligations, and terms; these details can change and are not established by the audience figures above.
What is still uncertain in Early Access
Hytale’s modding surface is not finished. Hypixel Studios says it is behind its desired state and that gaps remain in tools, documentation, and exposed systems. A technique that works for one project type may not be supported or stable for another.
CurseForge’s support article, modified February 9, 2026, warns that its tutorials may contain outdated or incomplete information because Hytale is in Early Access. Use the current official documentation and the target release patchline as the authority for commands, API names, dependency versions, and folder layouts.
No authoritative figure establishes beginner success rates, download conversion, or the total number of Hytale mods. Plan your first project around learning and reliable testing rather than an assumed audience size.

A practical learning roadmap
- Read the official documentation hub. Start with creating-content guidance and the Asset Reference instead of a random tutorial.
- Make one Asset Pack. Use the Asset Editor, change one asset, and validate the manifest and folder structure.
- Test locally. Enable the pack in a disposable world, inspect logs, restart, and restore from a backup if needed.
- Learn server operation. Run a local dedicated server and practice updating, backing up, and checking protocol versions.
- Learn Java only when necessary. Build a minimal plugin against the current Maven dependency and API documentation.
- Test like a player. Check joins, reconnects, restarts, invalid commands, and interactions with a clean server.
- Publish a documented release. Submit through CurseForge with an accurate version, compatibility statement, and concise installation information.
- Maintain rather than overbuild. Keep changes small, track the target patchline, and update promptly when Early Access changes break an asset or API.
This sequence keeps the first feedback loop short, avoids unnecessary Java work, and gives you a recoverable path from a single edited asset to a server-ready project.
