RLCraft is a modpack, not one standalone mod. The official CurseForge project is a coordinated collection of Minecraft mods, configuration files and custom scripts assembled by Shivaxi. The canonical release, RLCraft 1.12.2 version 2.9.3, uses Forge and combines roughly 185 mods—186 when OptiFine is included—into one deliberately tuned survival experience.

Why RLCraft is classified as a modpack
A Minecraft mod is normally one add-on supplied as a file for a particular Minecraft version and mod loader. It might add a creature, a block, a graphical feature or an entire game system. You install that file into a compatible instance and manage its settings separately.

A modpack is a prepared collection. The pack author selects multiple mods, pins them to compatible versions, changes their configuration and distributes the result through a launcher. The goal is not merely to put files in the same folder; it is to make the components behave as one designed game.

CurseForge lists RLCraft under the “Modpacks” category. That classification applies even though every feature inside the pack is implemented by individual mods. RLMixins, Lycanites Mobs and other components are mods; downloading or discussing one of those components does not turn the complete RLCraft project into a single mod.

What is inside RLCraft?
Shivaxi describes RLCraft as a collection he hand-selected and individually tweaked for a specific play style. The pack also uses custom scripts to alter vanilla behavior and to make otherwise separate mods interact coherently. Those configuration and scripting decisions are a major part of what you install; copying a few recognizable mods from the pack will not recreate RLCraft.
Approximately 185 integrated mods
The RLCraft Wiki describes approximately 185 mods in the pack, or 186 when OptiFine is counted. “Approximately” matters because the exact count can vary with the release, optional components and the way a launcher displays dependencies. The number is a description of the assembled release, not a promise that every future fork or unofficial repackage contains the same files.

The pack changes the assumptions of ordinary Minecraft survival. Its design combines a hardcore, semi-realistic challenge with RPG systems and adventure-style exploration. Progression, equipment, creatures, terrain and survival rules are configured to make preparation and risk management central to play. A player who installs only a creature mod or only a difficulty mod will experience a different game because the interlocking configuration is missing.
Which Minecraft version is the real RLCraft?
When people say “RLCraft” without another qualifier, they usually mean the established 1.12.2 line. The official files page lists RLCraft 1.12.2 version 2.9.3, released June 27, 2023. That release uses the Forge mod loader. The files page also lists older 1.11.2 files, so the Minecraft version should be checked before installation or when joining a server.

“Current” here means the release identified by the official project listing, not a claim that Minecraft 1.12.2 is the newest Minecraft edition. RLCraft’s identity is tied to its own release line, so installing a newer vanilla version does not automatically produce a newer RLCraft.
How to install the client through CurseForge
The normal route is the CurseForge launcher, which creates an isolated Minecraft profile and obtains the pack’s files together. Use the same pack release as your friends or server rather than installing individual mods by hand.

- Install and open the CurseForge application, then select Minecraft from the game list.
- Open Browse or Browse Modpacks, depending on the launcher version, and search for RLCraft.
- Choose the project published by Shivaxi. Check that the listing identifies it as a modpack and shows the Minecraft version you intend to use.
- Select Install. The launcher creates a separate profile, downloads the pack and installs the required Forge-based files.
- Open the new profile from My Modpacks or Installed. On the first launch, allow extra time for file extraction and world initialization.
- Before creating a long-term world, open the profile’s version or settings menu and confirm that it matches the release your server or friends use, such as 1.12.2 v2.9.3.
Do not add random “performance” or content mods until the unmodified profile launches successfully. A modpack’s configuration is part of its design; changing a library, replacing a configuration file or adding a mod built for another Minecraft version can cause a crash before the title screen.
How the server installation differs
RLCraft has a separate official Server Pack. That is another reason the project is a modpack rather than one downloadable mod: a multiplayer installation must reproduce the complete collection and its configuration on the server.

- Download the Server Pack that corresponds to the client release you plan to run.
- Extract it into a new server directory rather than overwriting an unrelated Forge server.
- Follow the included server startup instructions and accept Minecraft’s end-user license agreement when prompted.
- Start the server once, stop it cleanly, and review the generated configuration files before inviting players.
- Have every player install the matching RLCraft client release through the launcher. A client with a different pack version, missing mod or altered configuration may be rejected or behave unpredictably.
The exact startup command depends on the server files and Java environment supplied with your setup. Use the scripts included with the matching Server Pack instead of substituting a generic vanilla command. Keep backups of the world and configuration directories before changing settings.
Memory and performance: what the published guidance means
RLCraft is a large, heavily configured pack, so it generally needs more memory and patience at startup than an unmodified Minecraft installation. However, a memory figure associated with another project should not be treated as a universal RLCraft requirement.
The related RLCraft Dregora listing recommends 6–8 GB of RAM and specifies 8 GB for servers. That guidance is for Dregora, not a blanket requirement for every RLCraft release. Your usable setting depends on the launcher, operating system, Java runtime, render distance, other applications and the exact pack version.
- If the launcher reports an out-of-memory error, close other applications and increase the profile’s allocated memory gradually rather than assigning all system RAM.
- If the game stutters while the computer still has free memory, lower render distance and other video settings first; allocating more RAM does not fix every graphics or CPU bottleneck.
- Give the first launch extra time. Forge must load many files and may appear idle while it builds caches.
- Keep the pack in its own profile so another Minecraft installation cannot overwrite its mods or configurations.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Installing a single RLCraft mod
Downloading one component and placing it in a normal Minecraft profile does not install RLCraft. Remove the partial installation and use the complete CurseForge project so dependencies, scripts and configuration files arrive together.

Choosing the wrong Minecraft version
A 1.11.2 file and a 1.12.2 file are not interchangeable. Recreate the profile with the version shown on the official listing instead of trying to force an older mod into a newer instance.
Mixing client and server releases
Check the version number on both sides before troubleshooting connection errors. The client and Server Pack should come from the same RLCraft release line, and the server should be running Forge rather than a vanilla server jar.
Adding or removing files casually
Because RLCraft’s mods are configured as a system, removing a dependency can produce a missing-class error, while adding a conflicting mod can break world generation or startup. Test any change in a copied profile and keep a list of modifications so you can restore the official state.
Assuming a crash report means the pack is defective
First identify whether the crash occurs during download, Forge startup, world creation or multiplayer connection. Confirm the Minecraft and pack versions, restore the original configuration, verify the launcher’s files, and then inspect the crash report for the named mod or missing dependency. This sequence separates a damaged installation from a genuine compatibility problem.

Why the distinction matters when you ask for help
Calling RLCraft a modpack gives other players the information they need to diagnose your problem. “My Lycanites Mobs mod crashes” points to one component; “my RLCraft 1.12.2 v2.9.3 profile crashes during Forge startup” identifies the complete environment. Include the pack version, launcher, Minecraft version, whether you changed any files and whether the issue occurs in single-player or on a server.

What RLCraft is designed to deliver
The official project description characterizes RLCraft as a modpack built for an “incredibly hardcore and semi-realism challenge” centered on survival, RPG elements and adventure-like exploration. That description explains why the pack contains so many interacting systems instead of one narrowly focused feature.
Expect a deliberately demanding experience rather than vanilla Minecraft with a cosmetic upgrade. The appeal is the integrated ruleset: exploration has consequences, progression is broader than the vanilla path and the world is built to reward preparation. If you want only one new weapon, creature or visual effect, a standalone mod is the more appropriate category. If you want the complete rules and content designed by Shivaxi, install the full modpack and keep its release components together.
The practical verdict
RLCraft is a modpack distributed through CurseForge. It contains many individual Forge mods, custom scripts and configuration changes, with the canonical 1.12.2 v2.9.3 release listed on June 27, 2023. Install the client as a complete CurseForge profile, use the matching Server Pack for multiplayer, and treat individual components as parts of RLCraft rather than substitutes for it.
