Is pCloud Encryption Worth Paying Extra For?

pCloud Encryption adds client-side protection to a separate folder, not your whole account. Whether the fee is worth it depends on your privacy needs, passphrase habits and workflow.

pCloud Encryption can be worth the extra cost if you want pCloud to be unable to read a selected set of files and can reliably protect the Crypto passphrase. It encrypts files on your device before upload, but it is a separate Crypto Folder—not a switch that makes every file in your pCloud account zero-knowledge encrypted. The fee buys a stronger privacy boundary, with trade-offs in recovery and compatibility.

What does pCloud Encryption add?

pCloud describes its Crypto Folder as a place for files encrypted on your device before they are uploaded. The company says it does not hold the passphrase needed to decrypt those files. That means the incremental benefit is who can read the contents: pCloud says only you hold the key to unlock Crypto-folder files.

Ordinary pCloud files are protected differently. pCloud’s help documentation says files stored on its servers use 256-bit AES server-side encryption. That is encryption at rest, but it does not create the same provider-blind boundary as client-side encryption. pCloud’s explainer, published March 25, 2025, describes its client-side model as using AES-256 and TLS in transit; these are pCloud’s statements, not an independent assessment of its cryptographic implementation.

Crypto is a distinct folder workflow: you choose which files to put there. Files left in ordinary storage do not gain the Crypto Folder’s client-side protection.

Is the extra cost worth it for your files?

Consider what you need the add-on to protect and whether its restrictions fit your routine.

  • Provider access: If it matters that pCloud itself cannot read the contents of certain files, Crypto addresses a different concern from ordinary server-side encryption.
  • Scope: The separate folder suits a manageable set of sensitive files. It may be inconvenient if you expect every file and workflow in your account to have the same treatment.
  • Passphrase responsibility: pCloud says it cannot restore a lost Crypto passphrase. If you are not comfortable keeping an independent, secure recovery record, that design may outweigh the privacy benefit.
  • Compatibility: pCloud says the Crypto Folder cannot be accessed using WebDAV or rsync. If your workflow depends on either protocol for those files, the folder will not fit that use.
  • Cost over time: Compare the current quote at your checkout with how long you expect to use the feature and the value you place on protecting the files. Pricing can vary by region or promotion.

Who is most likely to benefit?

A stronger fit

The add-on is a better fit if you already use pCloud, have selected confidential personal or work files, want the provider-blind privacy boundary, do not need those files through WebDAV or rsync, and can preserve the passphrase securely.

  • Utilizes Military Grade FIPS PUB 197 Validated Encryption Algorithm
  • Super fast USB 3.0 Connection - Data transfer speeds up to 10X faster than USB 2.0

  • Brute Force Self Destruct Feature

A weaker fit

It is less suitable if your priority is routine syncing, shared-folder collaboration, protocol-based backups, or account-level password recovery. It is also a poor fit if your main concern is preventing accidental loss rather than provider access, or if you do not want responsibility for a credential pCloud cannot restore.

How much does pCloud Encryption cost?

When checked on October 7, 2026, pCloud’s official Encryption page displayed 49.99 EUR per year alongside 59.88 EUR. The page’s pricing labels were not fully clear, and those figures are a regional, time-sensitive display—not a universal quote. Currency, location, and promotions may affect checkout, so verify the price and billing terms shown for your account before deciding.

Can pCloud recover a lost Crypto passphrase?

No. pCloud’s terms say it cannot restore a lost Crypto passphrase. Keep a secure recovery record separate from the encrypted files, and do not make the Crypto Folder the only copy of irreplaceable data.

Can you use the Crypto Folder with WebDAV or rsync?

No. pCloud’s help documentation excludes the Crypto Folder from access through WebDAV and rsync, though those protocols can access ordinary account files. Check your backup or sync setup before moving files into Crypto.
