Protecting an online store means limiting the data and access an attacker could reach, keeping the store’s software and accounts secure, and knowing how payment systems and vendors affect your responsibilities. Work through those controls continuously—not just when you launch—and confirm your specific PCI DSS obligations with the entity that accepts your compliance assessment.
How can you reduce the customer data at risk?
Start with the information your store collects at account creation, checkout, customer support, and marketing signup. Remove fields that are not needed to complete a sale or provide a defined service. The Federal Trade Commission’s business guide puts the principle simply: “No one can steal what you don’t have.”

For data you do need, decide who can access it, how long you need to keep it, and how it will be securely disposed of when it is no longer required. Restrict access to staff and contractors whose work requires it; avoid giving broad administrative access by default. The FTC’s Start with Security: A Guide for Business discusses risks associated with unnecessary collection, excessive access, unencrypted storage, and weak vendor oversight.

Protect privileged logins
Use a unique password for every important account, especially store administration, hosting, payment dashboards, source-code repositories, and remote access. Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever available. A hardware token is one possible additional factor, but check that the platform or identity provider supports the specific method you choose. Limit administrator privileges to people who need them, and enable protections against repeated failed login attempts where the service offers them.

Keep systems current and recoverable
Update the commerce platform, plugins, themes, operating systems, and security software. Automate updates when appropriate, while ensuring someone is responsible for checking that they complete successfully. Keep backups of important store data and files, and make sure you can restore them; a backup that has never been tested may not be usable when needed. MFA does not replace updates or access controls. The FTC’s Cybersecurity for Small Business guidance covers MFA, updates, backups, and related baseline practices.
What should you check about your site, host, and email?
Use a hosting or commerce provider that supports TLS to protect data in transit, and establish who is responsible for updating the site and its components. Ask how privileged accounts are protected, where customer data is stored, whether it is encrypted, who can access it, and how to report suspicious activity. Confirm what backup and recovery options are available and what incident support the provider will give you.
If your business uses domain email, ask your email provider how to configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC authentication to help reduce domain impersonation. Keep public or guest wireless access separate from the business network.

How does payment setup affect PCI DSS responsibilities?
Outsourcing payment processing does not automatically remove every merchant-managed system from consideration. The payment flow, the pages that initiate it, and systems that can affect those pages may matter to PCI DSS scope and to whether a merchant is eligible to use a particular Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). The table summarizes the distinction in PCI Security Standards Council guidance; it is not a determination of your store’s eligibility.
| Payment setup | What the cited PCI guidance says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded third-party payment form | PCI SSC’s February 2025 FAQ says the PCI DSS v4.0.1 SAQ A r1 script criterion applies to e-commerce pages with an embedded third-party payment form. The FAQ describes techniques associated with Requirements 6.4.3 and 11.6.1, or confirmation from the compliant payment provider, as ways to address that criterion. | Confirm how the criterion is met and whether every other SAQ A eligibility condition applies to your environment. |
| Redirect to a payment processor or fully outsourced payment flow | The same February 2025 FAQ says that specific script criterion does not apply to redirect or fully outsourced payment flows. It does not say that every other SAQ A criterion or merchant obligation disappears. | Identify merchant-managed pages and systems that can affect payment integrity, then confirm the applicable assessment requirements. |
The PCI SSC’s February 2025 FAQ on the SAQ A script criterion addresses PCI DSS v4.0.1 SAQ A r1. A separate PCI SSC FAQ dated May 2019 explains that SAQ A merchants may still need to protect merchant-managed redirect mechanisms and systems that affect their integrity, including applicable password, authentication, and patching controls. Because that older FAQ predates newer standards, check current PCI SSC materials and ask your acquirer, payment brands, or other compliance-accepting entity which SAQ applies. Do not assume a hosted checkout makes a merchant PCI-exempt.

How can you prepare to detect and handle an incident?
Monitor for unauthorized access and unusual activity, and train staff to recognize and report suspicious events. Prepare a written response plan that identifies who will make decisions, how you will preserve relevant data, how the business will continue operating, and how affected customers will be notified if needed. Include vendor contact details and the steps for restricting or removing compromised access.
