Is Paramount+ Shutting Down? What the Planned Streaming Unification Means

Paramount+ is still operating. Skydance says its streaming products will unify over time, but has not announced the new service name, date, subscriber migration, or price.

Paramount+ has not been announced as shut down. Skydance, the company that completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026, says its direct-to-consumer streaming products will unify into one service over time. It has not announced a launch date, replacement-service name, subscriber migration process, or future price.

What does “Paramount+ phaseout” mean right now?

It describes a possible future change, not a completed shutdown. Skydance’s October 6 announcement says the streaming products will “unify into a single service over time,” but does not identify Paramount+ as already ending or explain how the eventual service will work. The acquisition is complete; the consumer-facing integration is not.

Skydance’s acquisition completion announcement is the primary source for the plan. The Associated Press report on October 6 likewise said the future service name and effects on consumer costs and choices were unknown.

What changed with the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition?

Skydance announced that its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery had closed on October 6, 2026. The combined company, named Skydance, includes Paramount and Warner Bros. studios, CBS, HBO, streaming services, sports assets, and news organizations. Paramount+ and HBO Max are now under the same corporate umbrella, but shared ownership does not mean the two services have already merged.

Skydance described unifying its direct-to-consumer products as a plan for “over time,” alongside promised improvements. That wording gives no specific schedule or details about what users will see in an app, how accounts would be handled, or whether one existing service will be discontinued in favor of another.

What is not confirmed about the future service?

The October 6 announcement and same-day reporting do not establish:

  • A shutdown date for Paramount+ or HBO Max.
  • The name or launch date of a unified service.
  • Whether subscribers will need to create new accounts, or how billing and profiles might transfer.
  • What the combined service would cost or how its plans would be structured.

David Ellison, Skydance’s chairman and CEO, told the Associated Press earlier in 2026, “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO.” He also said combining platforms could allow content to reach a broader audience. These comments suggest HBO’s brand may retain some independence, but they do not confirm the service’s final branding or product structure.

What Paramount+ offers subscribers today

Skydance’s Paramount+ plans page currently describes Essential and Premium. It presents Premium as including the full Showtime portfolio, live CBS streams, and an expanded lineup of live sports and events; the page says all subscribers can access CBS News Network and CBS Sports HQ. These are current plan descriptions, not a guarantee that benefits or plan names will remain the same after any future integration. Check the service’s page for current details before subscribing or changing plans.

What Skydance’s scale claims do—and don’t—tell subscribers

In its October 6 announcement, Skydance cited more than 200 million streaming subscribers across its platforms and a combined portfolio of more than 180 television shows and series. It also committed to at least 30 theatrical films annually and set a target of at least $6 billion in run-rate synergies within three years. Those are company-wide figures and targets, not Paramount+-only subscriber counts, a streaming launch timetable, or evidence of a planned price increase.

What Paramount+ subscribers should do now

  • Use Paramount+ as it is currently offered; there is no announced shutdown date requiring an immediate switch.
  • Follow official Paramount+ and Skydance announcements for concrete details about timing, accounts, and pricing.
  • Before making a decision based on a claimed replacement or migration, look for an official notice that names the service and explains what subscribers need to do.

A February 27, 2026 merger announcement hosted by the SEC described a combined direct-to-consumer platform as a transaction-era plan. For the completed deal and current wording about streaming unification, the October 6 Skydance announcement is the more relevant update.
