Is Opera’s Free VPN Really Free—and What Does It Protect?

Opera’s free built-in VPN has unlimited data and needs no account, but its protection is limited to traffic in the Opera browser.

Yes. Opera’s built-in browser VPN is free to use, with unlimited data transfer and no account requirement, according to Opera. But it protects traffic inside the Opera browser—not every app on your device. Opera’s paid VPN Pro is the whole-device option.

What does Opera’s free VPN include?

Opera describes its built-in VPN as a free service with unlimited data transfer. Its product page also says an account is not required. The feature routes Opera browser connections through a VPN server, encrypting the connection between the browser and that server and changing the IP address and apparent location websites see. Opera Help explains the browser feature, and Opera’s product page describes its current offer.

“Free” applies to the browser feature, not to Opera VPN Pro. Opera positions Pro as a paid service that covers the entire device.

Does Opera VPN have a data limit or guarantee a certain speed?

Opera says the free desktop service has unlimited data transfer. That does not mean it guarantees a particular speed. Opera’s Android help says there are no fixed bandwidth or speed limits, but actual browsing speed depends on current server load. The Android guidance is platform-specific; feature behavior and availability can differ between desktop and mobile. Opera’s Android VPN FAQs describe those limits and conditions.

Does Opera’s VPN protect the whole device or just the browser?

The free built-in VPN is browser-scoped: it applies to connections made through Opera, not automatically to traffic from every other app on a computer or phone. Opera VPN Pro is the broader, paid alternative that Opera says protects the entire device. Do not treat the free browser feature as a system-wide VPN.

Opera’s product page lists three general locations for Free VPN and 48 country regions for VPN Pro. Those are Opera’s current product-page counts and may change; the desktop help page separately lists Europe, Asia, and the Americas as selectable regions, plus an automatic optimal location. Region choices may vary by platform. Check Opera’s product page for the current comparison and desktop help for its region descriptions.

Does Opera VPN keep logs?

Opera says its free browser VPN does not log browsing activity or a user’s originating network address. Opera also says Deloitte independently audited the service’s no-log policy. The sources cited here are Opera’s descriptions of the audit, not the underlying audit report, so the audit claim should be understood as Opera’s account. Its 2024 announcement and May 2026 security article set out these statements.

Opera says it funds the free feature through its broader business, including advertising, partnerships, and paid subscriptions. That explanation is also Opera’s own account, not independent verification of its business practices.

Does the VPN make browsing anonymous?

No VPN makes every form of tracking disappear. Opera says the feature can help improve privacy on local networks such as public Wi-Fi, and it can disguise the user’s IP address and location from websites. But Opera’s help notes that cookies can still identify visitors. The browser VPN should therefore be treated as one privacy measure, not a guarantee of anonymity or a universal tracker blocker. Opera Help’s VPN guidance explains both the connection and the cookie caveat.

Can Opera VPN turn on automatically on public Wi-Fi?

Opera announced on September 24, 2026, that desktop Opera can automatically enable the free VPN when it detects a public Wi-Fi network. The setting is off by default and must be enabled by the user. Opera said the rollout began in the United States and France; availability may depend on rollout, platform, and settings, so it should not be assumed to be available or enabled for everyone.
