It is convenient when flexibility matters, but the model selected can vary. If consistent model behavior matters, select a specific model listed as free instead, then check its current availability and features.
OpenRouter provides a unified API and model identifiers for selecting models. Its model catalog includes details such as context length and pricing. Check the selected model’s current capabilities rather than assuming that a free variant has the same limits or features as a paid version. The Free plan’s published allowance is 50 requests per day, according to OpenRouter’s pricing page checked October 4, 2026. The retrieved pricing table does not state a per-minute limit. A secondary tutorial has reported higher limits after adding credits, but those figures are not confirmed by the pricing information cited here; check OpenRouter’s current rate-limit documentation before relying on a credit-linked increase or a per-minute allowance.
OpenRouter’s support FAQ says free models have low rate limits and are not suitable for production. Free access is better treated as a way to learn, prototype, or run low-stakes experiments than as a dependable production quota. Providers can also move models from free to paid-only access, so check the current listing before building a workflow around a particular model.

What happens to your code and prompts?
OpenRouter’s Privacy Policy says requests are transmitted to the model provider you select or the provider chosen through automatic routing. Provider practices vary: a provider may retain inputs or outputs, or use them for training, fine-tuning, evaluation, or model improvement. Where provider practices are disclosed, OpenRouter labels models that do not use user data for training. Check the applicable provider terms before sending proprietary code, credentials, personal data, or unreleased work.
OpenRouter’s support FAQ says the platform logs basic request metadata, such as timestamps, model, and token counts; it says prompts and completions are not logged by default, though users can opt in to logging. That statement concerns OpenRouter’s platform logging. It does not establish what an upstream model provider does with your request. A $0 price or OpenRouter’s default logging setting is not, by itself, a privacy or no-training guarantee.
OpenRouter documents organization guardrails that can include budget limits, model and provider allowlists, zero-data-retention enforcement for supported groups, and content filtering. These controls should not be assumed to apply to every user: the pricing page lists budgets and spend controls as unavailable on the Free plan.

- Check the live free list: Open the free-model collection and confirm the model you want is still listed at zero token price.
- Review the provider’s data terms: Check retention and training practices before sending sensitive code or other private information.
- Match the model to your task: Check coding-agent or tool support, context length, input and output modalities, and the provider’s current availability. Treat catalog rankings and descriptions as selection information, not proof of quality.
- Choose routing deliberately: Use
openrouter/freewhen a changing selection is acceptable; select a named free model when you need a consistent intended choice. - Keep usage within the published allowance: Plan around the Free plan’s 50 requests per day, and verify any other claimed limits in current official documentation.
- Try a representative task: Evaluate the model’s behavior on your own code and workflow before depending on it.
