You can still play Fire Emblem: Awakening, but “never been a better time” needs a qualification: the game remains available on a physical Nintendo 3DS game card, while new eShop purchases, new DLC sales and online features have ended. For a new player, the practical route supported by Nintendo’s information is a used copy and compatible Nintendo 3DS-family hardware—not a new digital purchase.
Can you still buy and play Fire Emblem: Awakening?
Yes, if you can find a physical copy and have a compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system. Nintendo identifies Fire Emblem: Awakening as Nintendo 3DS software distributed on a game card in its official product information. Nintendo’s support notice says new Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases ended on March 27, 2023, and download-code redemption ended on April 3, 2023. Nintendo Support explains the eShop changes.

New DLC purchases are no longer available
Nintendo Japan’s Fire Emblem: Awakening product page says sales of additional maps ended on March 28, 2023. Nintendo’s broader eShop notice says new 3DS software and DLC purchases ended March 27, 2023. These are distinct notices: the game-specific page gives the date for additional-map sales.

- "4.5 out of 4 (Editor's Choice). The best Nintendo 3DS RPG to date" - Gamesradar
Nintendo says customers can still redownload games and DLC they already purchased, and receive software updates, for the foreseeable future. That applies to prior purchases; it does not let a new owner buy the maps now through the closed store.
Online communication has ended
Nintendo Support’s North American notice says online play and other functions using online communication for 3DS and Wii U software ended on April 8, 2024. Nintendo Japan’s game page specifies that the internet features it lists, including item receipt, ended at 9:00 a.m. Japan time on April 9, 2024. The dates come from different regional notices, so they should not be treated as one universal local-time cutoff.

What does that mean for a new player?
The game can still be approached as a 3DS campaign on original hardware, but a new buyer should distinguish the base game from content that depended on Nintendo’s store or online services. The physical card provides access to the game itself; it does not restore the ability to purchase additional maps or use discontinued online communication features.
- Game: look for a physical Nintendo 3DS copy.
- Hardware: you need a compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system.
- Additional maps: new purchases are no longer offered; previously purchased content remains redownloadable for the foreseeable future according to Nintendo.
- Online functions: Nintendo’s stated service shutdowns have taken effect, with dates specified in regional notices.
Before paying, confirm what is included in a listing, whether the cartridge and console are from compatible regions, and whether the system works. The official information cited here does not verify region compatibility for any particular listing or hardware combination.

- Two kingdoms are on the brink of war. Whose side will you choose?
- Torn between two families, you're an heir of Hoshido, raised by Nohrian royals.
- If you walk the path of Conquest, you must fight to change your misguided kingdom from within.
- Command warriors with expert precision and forge deep relationships to master this turn-based strategy game.
- “T” Teen w/ Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, & Suggestive Themes
So, is there ever been a better time?
That claim is not established by the available facts. A physical copy still makes it possible to play the 3DS game, but digital purchases and additional-map sales have ended, and online communication features are no longer available. There is no basis here to promise a lower used price, a better overall experience, or a release on a newer Nintendo platform. If you already own the game and compatible hardware, you can still play it; if you are starting from scratch, weigh the physical-copy hunt and the missing services against your interest in the game.
