Nomad is a good choice if you want prepaid data sorted before you fly, your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable, and the plan for your exact route fits your data needs. It is not the best option for every trip. Coverage, networks, speeds, price, validity and refund terms all depend on the plan and destination. This review covers what Nomad offers, what the published evidence supports, and how to decide against a local SIM or another travel eSIM. We did not run our own field tests, so the assessment rests on Nomad’s documentation, store ratings and a published third-party review.
Where Nomad fits
Nomad sells prepaid data eSIMs that you buy and manage in an app or on its site. Its selling points are convenience, hotspot support and plans for many destinations. Its homepage claims service in more than 200 destinations (provider claim, 2026). That figure is a marketing headline. Check the plan page for your own route.

TechRadar’s May 22, 2026 review calls Nomad a solid contender for frequent international travelers. It says the best choice depends on destination and data needs. It also reports occasional speed or coverage complaints and says a local SIM may be better in some cases. TechRadar adds that neither Nomad nor Airalo is universally better.

What the plans look like
Nomad organizes plans by country and region. Its help center coverage article lists examples of 3, 5, 10 and 20 GB packages with 30-day validity for some country and regional plans. These are examples, not a guaranteed current catalog. Allowance, validity, network and speed vary by plan.

Territories and speed
Nomad says availability and speed vary by location and time of day. It also warns that overseas territories may not be covered by a named country plan. If your trip includes islands or territories, confirm each one on the plan page before paying.
Price
The Global eSIM page markets plans from US$12. That is an entry price that can change, and it says little by itself. Compare equivalent packages: same countries, same data, same number of days, same currency. No live like-for-like competitor price check was available, so we make no claim that Nomad is the cheapest.

Add-ons
Some plans allow extra data. The homepage says add-on data is tied to the main eSIM. The Global page describes add-ons that may apply after the initial plan expires. Before you rely on one, check whether it adds data, extends validity, or only starts once the first allowance is used. Some App Store reviewers complained about add-on expectations, so read this part carefully.
Will your phone work?
You need an eSIM-capable handset that is carrier-unlocked. Nomad’s purchase guide points buyers to the compatibility list in its app. AP News gives the same advice about unlocked phones. Nothing here justifies buying a new phone for Nomad. Check the one you own.

Buying, installing and activating
- Choose your destination and a data package, paying attention to validity.
- Confirm your device is compatible and unlocked.
- Install by QR code or the app’s one-click flow. The App Store listing advertises both.
- Set Nomad as your mobile data line. Keep your home SIM on only if you want calls or texts, and check your home carrier’s roaming settings to avoid surprise charges.
You can buy an eSIM for another traveler and send them the QR code or a generated code. Installation must still happen on that person’s own device.
Timing rules
The Global page says plans can be installed before you travel. It also says a plan must be activated within 60 days of purchase. If it is not, it activates automatically and its validity starts counting down. Some eSIMs may need manual activation. Read the installation email instead of assuming the clock starts when you land.

Hotspot and speed limits
Nomad says tethering is supported, which helps if you share data with a laptop or companion. Conditions are plan-specific. For example, Nomad’s support article on the Nomad Chip unlimited plan says the first 1 GB per day runs at maximum network speed. Data beyond that is capped at 512 kbps. That applies to that product, not to every Nomad plan.
Refunds
Nomad’s purchase guide, dated September 22, 2026, limits refund requests to eSIMs that were never activated. Confirmed refunds go to the Nomad International Account within three business days. Terms can differ by product, so check the flow for the one you buy.

What ratings and reviews show
- The App Store listing showed 4.8 out of 5 from 17K ratings (snapshot accessed October 5, 2026). Reviews mix positive setup and connectivity stories with complaints about add-ons.
- Nomad’s homepage showed 4.3 out of 5 from 44,890 Trustpilot reviews. This is a provider-displayed figure, and another Nomad page showed a different count.
These are aggregates, not performance tests for your destination. We found no independent, Nomad-specific reliability statistic or field test. AP News quoted CCS Insight’s Kester Mann on travel eSIMs generally: “These guys have a role to play because I think they offer a very affordable and attractive opportunity for international travelers.” That is not an endorsement of Nomad in particular.
How to decide: Nomad, rival eSIM or local SIM
Compare each option on the same terms:
- Does it cover every stop, including territories?
- How much usable data comes with it, and for how many days?
- Which networks and speed conditions apply where you will be?
- Can you tether, and are there limits?
- Do you need a phone number, calls or SMS, or is data enough?
- When does validity begin, and what are the cancellation and refund rules?
- What is the total cost in your currency for the same route, data and days?
Nomad is a good fit if
- You want data working on arrival, without queuing for a SIM.
- You visit several countries, or a region that has a plan covering it.
- Your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.
- You are fine with data-only service.
Consider alternatives if
- You are staying long in one country, where a local SIM may cost less and offer a number.
- You need voice or SMS, which depends on the specific plan.
- Your route includes territories the plan excludes.
The Bottom Line
Nomad is a sensible, convenient pick for data-only travel when a plan matches your route, phone and trip length. Before paying, open the plan page for your destination and confirm price, data, validity, networks, territory coverage, hotspot rules and refund terms. Then compare it against a local SIM or a rival eSIM.
