A VPN can get you onto Telegram when your network blocks it, but it can’t promise to. The VPN provider, its protocol, or Telegram’s own servers may be blocked on your network. A VPN also doesn’t make Telegram cloud chats end-to-end encrypted. Only Telegram’s Secret Chats are.
This guide covers five providers: Proton VPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and Mullvad. Each has documented features that matter for Telegram. The evidence comes from the providers’ own documentation, not independent speed or unblocking tests, so the picks below are matched to problems rather than ranked by measured performance.

Which VPN works with Telegram?
Telegram doesn’t require special VPN support. Its apps send traffic like any other app, so any VPN that connects on your network will carry it. The real question is which VPN will still connect where you are, and what you want it to protect. Two separate problems get mixed together:
- Access: Telegram, or VPN traffic itself, is blocked on your network.
- Privacy: you don’t want your ISP, café Wi-Fi or employer’s network to see where your traffic goes.
For access, the useful feature is obfuscation, which makes VPN traffic harder to identify. For privacy, it’s the provider’s no-logs evidence and its security tooling.

The five providers compared
Everything in this table is provider-published documentation. None of it is independent comparative testing, and none of it shows that a given VPN will unblock Telegram in a given country.
| Provider | Most relevant documented feature | Best fit | Limit of the evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Says it doesn’t log visited sites, traffic content, IP addresses, session lengths or location data. Says its apps are open source and independently audited, and that its no-logs policy was independently verified. Documents a modified WireGuard implementation using double NAT. | Privacy-first users who want published audit claims | Audit and logging statements are Proton’s own descriptions |
| NordVPN | Says Deloitte performed its sixth no-logs review in 2025. Offers Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and a kill switch. | Users who want extra privacy layers and a kill switch | The audit history is NordVPN’s claim; the assurance report itself wasn’t reviewed |
| Surfshark | Describes obfuscated servers that make VPN traffic harder to identify. Says NoBorders activates when its app detects network restrictions. | Restrictive networks where plain VPN connections fail | Shows a relevant feature, not that Telegram access will succeed on your network |
| ExpressVPN | Describes its Lightway protocol and reports two Cure53 assessments, in 2021 and 2022. | Users who want a proprietary protocol with published security assessments | Nothing establishes that Lightway bypasses Telegram blocking; the assessments are several years old |
| Mullvad | Its app security documentation says the app can wrap VPN tunnel and API traffic in multiple obfuscation protocols. | Technically inclined users who want to switch anti-censorship methods | Supports mentioning the tooling, not promising an outcome |
Proton VPN: when you want the strongest published privacy documentation
Proton’s claims are the most detailed of the five on logging. It says it keeps no record of visited websites, traffic content, IP addresses, session lengths or location-based information. It also says its apps are open source and independently audited. Its double NAT arrangement in a modified WireGuard implementation is a technical design choice that Proton documents, and it affects how user traffic is mixed on shared exit addresses. Treat all of this as Proton’s account of itself, backed by the audits it cites.

NordVPN: when you want layered features
NordVPN says Deloitte conducted its sixth no-logs review in 2025. It also offers Double VPN (two hops), Onion Over VPN (routing through Tor) and a kill switch. The kill switch is the most practical of these for Telegram. If the VPN drops, it cuts the connection, so Telegram doesn’t silently reconnect over your normal network and expose your real IP address to that network. Double VPN and Onion Over VPN add hops, which normally costs speed, and they matter mainly under heightened threat models.

Surfshark: when the block targets VPNs
Many restrictive networks block Telegram and also try to detect VPN traffic. Surfshark describes obfuscated servers designed to make VPN traffic harder to identify. It says its NoBorders mode turns on when the app detects network restrictions. That is the most directly relevant access feature in this group, though it only helps if your network’s filtering can be beaten by that method.

ExpressVPN: when protocol choice and external assessments matter
ExpressVPN describes its Lightway protocol and reports Cure53 assessments in 2021 and 2022. These speak to code review, not to circumvention. Pick it for its security posture and ease of use. Don’t pick it because you expect Lightway to defeat a Telegram block, because the source doesn’t support that.
Mullvad: when you want to choose your own obfuscation
Mullvad’s app security documentation says the app supports wrapping VPN tunnel and API traffic in multiple obfuscation protocols. Having more than one option helps because a method that fails on one network may work on another. The trade-off is that you may need to try settings yourself, so it suits users comfortable doing that.

Can I use Telegram if it’s blocked in my country?
Sometimes. Results depend on your country, ISP and the specific blocking method, and they can change without notice. Nobody can honestly say that a particular VPN “works in” a given country without current, location-specific testing, and this article doesn’t claim that. Try these in order:
- Install a VPN before you need it. Provider websites and app stores are often blocked in the places where VPNs are most needed.
- Connect with the default protocol first. If Telegram loads, you’re done.
- Switch on obfuscation (Surfshark’s obfuscated servers or NoBorders, or Mullvad’s obfuscation options) if the connection fails or drops immediately.
- Change the server location and protocol. Blocks are often uneven across endpoints.
- Try Telegram’s MTProxy. Telegram says MTProxy can help circumvent restrictions on access to Telegram and obfuscate traffic. Both the mobile and desktop apps have proxy settings.
VPN versus MTProxy
Telegram explains that proxies commonly route selected app traffic, while VPNs usually encrypt and route all device traffic. They can also be combined. Telegram’s MTProxy guide says: “For maximum security, users who have reasons to expect advanced surveillance should consider layering a trusted VPN on top of the protection MTProxy already provides.”
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Be careful with proxy sources. Telegram advises using only trusted proxies, because the operator can see your connecting IP address and metadata even though it cannot read your messages. Don’t take proxies from random public lists.
Does a VPN make Telegram chats secure?
It secures one part of the picture: the network path between your device and the VPN provider. The two layers work differently:
| Layer | What protects it | What a VPN changes |
|---|---|---|
| Your connection on the local network or ISP | VPN tunnel | Hides your traffic’s destination and contents from the local network |
| Cloud chats (the default) | Telegram’s own encryption between your app and Telegram’s servers | Nothing. A VPN doesn’t turn cloud chats into Secret Chats |
| Secret Chats | End-to-end encryption, tied to the specific devices in the chat | Nothing; they are protected either way |
| Your account | Two-step verification and an app passcode | Nothing |
A VPN doesn’t give the provider access to message content just because it carries the traffic, since Telegram’s traffic is itself encrypted. What changes is who sees your connection metadata: a VPN shifts that trust from your local network or ISP to the VPN company. That is why the no-logs claims above matter.
Settings that matter more than the VPN
- Use Secret Chats for sensitive conversations. Telegram’s FAQ says: “If you have reasons to worry about your personal security, we strongly recommend using only Secret Chats in official or at least verifiable open-source apps for sensitive information, preferably with a self-destruct timer.”
- Turn on two-step verification and set a strong app passcode, both of which Telegram recommends.
- Use only the official Telegram apps, or at least verifiable open-source ones.
- Remember that Secret Chats are device-specific, so they won’t appear on your other devices.
How to choose among the five
- Your network blocks VPNs as well as Telegram: start with Surfshark or Mullvad for their documented obfuscation options.
- You want audit evidence for no-logs claims: compare Proton VPN’s and NordVPN’s published statements, and read the audit scope for yourself.
- You need leak protection if the tunnel drops: check that a kill switch exists on your platform. NordVPN documents one.
- You want a well-reviewed protocol: ExpressVPN’s Lightway has two Cure53 assessments, though they date from 2021 and 2022.
Before paying, check the current price and refund terms on the provider’s site, along with whether it supports your device. Those details change often and aren’t covered here. Also confirm the provider’s site and app are reachable from your network.
The Bottom Line
Treat all five as plausible candidates, not proven winners. For blocked networks, favor obfuscation (Surfshark, Mullvad). For privacy documentation, favor Proton VPN or NordVPN. Whichever you choose, keep sensitive conversations in Secret Chats and turn on two-step verification.
