The latest company filings show weaker revenue and Nike Direct sales, ongoing pressure in Greater China and Converse, and a large fiscal 2026 earnings benefit tied to expected tariff recovery. Nike also has a recovery plan and a global brand portfolio, but the filings do not establish a current share price or valuation multiple. The useful question is whether Nike can restore durable sales and earnings—not whether its shares look inexpensive against a possibly inflated earnings figure.
Is Nike stock cheap right now?
The available company filings are not enough to answer that question with a valuation verdict. They provide financial and operating results, but not a dated share price or a current price-to-earnings multiple. Without those inputs—and a defensible estimate of sustainable earnings or cash flow—calling the stock cheap or expensive would overstate what the evidence shows.

A low multiple can be misleading if the earnings used in its denominator include unusual benefits or reflect a temporary peak. Conversely, weak current results do not by themselves prove that a business is permanently impaired. For Nike, the valuation case depends on whether its sales, margins and cash generation can recover, and at what cost.

Q1 fiscal 2027: revenue fell, while gross margin improved
In the quarter ended August 31, 2026, Nike reported revenue of $11.2 billion, down 4% year over year on a reported basis and 5% on a currency-neutral basis. Nike Direct revenue was $4.1 billion, compared with $4.5 billion in the same quarter a year earlier. Gross margin rose 60 basis points year over year to 42.8%.

- Mesh on upper adds breathability.
- Flywire cables provide a supportive feel when you tighten the laces.
- Plush foam midsole cushions each step.
- Grooves on the rubber outsole help your foot move naturally.
- DR2695-114
Inventory was $7.8 billion at August 31, up 5% from May 31. Taken together, these figures show why one improving metric is not enough to establish a turnaround: gross margin rose, but sales were lower, Direct revenue declined and inventory increased. Nike’s filing also describes ongoing markdown and marketplace-inventory pressure. Nike’s Q1 FY2027 Form 10-Q provides the quarter’s results and management’s discussion.
Fiscal 2026: wholesale growth offset some Direct weakness
For the fiscal year ended May 31, 2026, Nike generated $46.4 billion in revenue, essentially flat on a reported basis and down 2% currency-neutral. Net income was $3.1 billion, down 3%. The channel results were mixed: Nike Direct revenue fell 6% reported and 8% currency-neutral, while wholesale revenue rose 6% reported and 4% currency-neutral.

- Flex grooves create a cushioned effect for your run.
- Waffle outsole is a made of a durable, flexible material that helps keep you on the move.

That mix is not an across-the-board collapse, but it does show that the company-owned channel weakened while wholesale grew. The distinction matters when assessing a recovery: total sales, channel mix, and the profitability of each channel can move differently. The full-year figures are in Nike’s FY2026 Form 10-K.

Why might Nike eventually be undervalued?
The potential bull case is conditional: Nike remains a large global footwear and apparel business with direct and wholesale routes to customers, and management is attempting to address areas of weakness. Its stated priorities include sport, product innovation, consumer connection and retail experience. Actions described in the latest filing include rebalancing footwear supply, repositioning Nike Brand Digital as a full-price platform, reinvesting in wholesale and physical retail, and investing in sports and brand marketing.

If consumers respond to those efforts, inventory and markdown pressure ease, and full-price sales improve without damaging the brand, earnings could recover. But these are possible outcomes, not results already demonstrated by the latest figures. A strong brand portfolio can support a recovery thesis; it cannot substitute for evidence that demand and margins are improving.
Why could Nike be a value trap?
Reported earnings include a substantial tariff-recovery benefit
Nike’s fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter diluted EPS was $0.72, including $0.52 from the expected recovery of IEEPA tariffs. For fiscal 2026, Nike recorded a $986 million cost-of-sales benefit from that recovery. These are not interchangeable measures: one is the stated contribution to fourth-quarter EPS, while the other is the full-year cost-of-sales benefit. Neither should be treated as ordinary recurring earnings power when judging what Nike might earn in a typical future year. See the June 30, 2026 fiscal 2026 results release and the FY2026 filing.

Regional and brand pressures have not been resolved
Nike says Greater China continues to face declining store traffic, elevated promotions and higher marketplace inventory. It expects corrective actions there to extend beyond fiscal 2027. Converse is undergoing a strategic reset that Nike expects to continue throughout fiscal 2027. The latest filing therefore does not support a claim that either market or brand has recovered.
The turnaround has costs, and savings are not yet established
Nike announced a multiyear Pace enterprise program with approximately $1.0 billion in expected pretax charges: approximately $0.3 billion expected in fiscal 2027, with the remainder expected through fiscal 2031. The company says actual amounts and timing may differ from its estimates. These announced charges are not evidence that projected savings have been achieved; the filing does not establish realized future savings.

What would need to improve for Nike stock to recover?
A credible recovery would show up across several measures, not just in one better quarter or one margin figure. Investors can use the following checklist when reviewing subsequent results:
- Revenue: reported and currency-neutral sales should stabilize and then improve; the two measures should be kept distinct.
- Channel health: Nike Direct needs to stop declining, while wholesale growth should be assessed alongside its contribution to the overall business.
- Margins and selling mix: gross-margin improvement should be supported by healthier full-price sales and less discounting, rather than inferred from a single period’s result.
- Greater China: watch for better store traffic and lower promotional and marketplace-inventory pressure.
- Converse and other brand lines: look for evidence that the Converse reset and Nike’s Sportswear and Jordan efforts are improving performance.
- Inventory and cash generation: assess whether inventory is being brought into balance and whether operating cash generation supports the earnings picture.
- Restructuring: compare Pace charges with savings actually reported, rather than treating announced estimates as delivered benefits.
How to assess the valuation without mistaking a low multiple for value
Start with a dated stock price, then compare it with an earnings or cash-flow estimate that reflects recurring operations. For Nike, that means separating the fiscal 2026 tariff-recovery benefit from ordinary performance and allowing for continuing weakness, restructuring costs and the time needed for management’s actions to work. A valuation based on past peak profits could make the stock appear cheaper than it is if those profits are not sustainable.
Test more than one recovery path. A cautious case would assume that currency-neutral revenue remains weak, Direct sales and regional pressures take time to improve, and restructuring costs arrive before benefits. A stronger case would require observable improvement in sales quality, inventory, full-price demand and margins. The company filings provide operating evidence for these questions, but they do not supply the market price or assumptions needed to calculate a current valuation. Management’s characterization of its fiscal 2026 actions as a foundation for long-term growth is a statement of intent, not independent confirmation that the plan will succeed.
