EA lists that service under a January 19, 2023 shutdown entry. The older NBA JAM service entries for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are in EA’s pre-2013 section, so they should not be treated as active either.
You can still play NBA Jam locally on compatible legacy consoles. Xbox currently lists On Fire Edition as playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility, but that listing only describes console compatibility; it does not restore EA’s discontinued servers. Unofficial remote-play projects exist, but they involve modified software and are experimental rather than supported online multiplayer.

What happened to NBA Jam’s online multiplayer?
NBA Jam’s online history is split between different releases, and treating them as one game causes most of the confusion.
On Fire Edition’s servers were shut down
NBA Jam: On Fire Edition launched in 2011 as a digital download for PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade. EA promoted it with “all-new online modes,” including the network features that made the edition attractive after the 2010 retail game. EA’s current online-services index places On Fire Edition under January 19, 2023. That is a service-termination date, not a temporary outage or a statement that matchmaking is merely difficult to find.

The 2010 NBA JAM entries are older still
The separate 2010 game, titled NBA JAM, was released for PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360. EA’s service index places its PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 entries in a pre-2013 category. Those entries are historical service records; they are not evidence of servers that remain available today. The Wii release is a distinct platform version, so its platform and network behavior should not be inferred from the later On Fire Edition.
Which editions and platforms are involved?
| Edition | Original platforms | Distribution | Online status | What remains practical |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NBA JAM (2010) | PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360 | Retail console release | EA lists the PS3 and Xbox 360 service entries in the pre-2013 section; current online play should not be expected | Local play on the relevant console, subject to the console, disc and controller setup |
| NBA Jam: On Fire Edition (2011) | PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 | Digital download through PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade | EA lists the online service under January 19, 2023; official online modes are discontinued | Local console play where the edition is already installed or otherwise available |
| Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S are listed by the Xbox store for On Fire Edition | Backward-compatible console listing | The listing does not indicate live EA servers or working matchmaking | Use it as a compatibility check for local play, not as proof of online functionality |
The distinction between a game license and a live service matters. A console store can continue to show a product as compatible, downloadable or playable while the publisher’s matchmaking, authentication or leaderboard infrastructure has been retired.
Can you still play NBA Jam with another person?
Local multiplayer is the dependable option
NBA Jam is built around two-on-two arcade basketball. The straightforward modern use case is therefore local play: two people sharing a console and television, with each player joining the same game session from the console’s local multiplayer menu. The available sources establish the game’s two-on-two format and its console platforms, but they do not establish a universal controller count or an identical menu path for every edition.

Before buying a copy or arranging a session, identify the exact release—2010 NBA JAM or 2011 On Fire Edition—and the console on which you intend to run it. Then confirm that you have the required controllers, that the console recognizes them, and that the game reaches its local exhibition or multiplayer mode without requesting a server connection. Menu labels and controller requirements can vary by platform and edition, so avoid assuming that instructions for one version apply to another.
A practical local-play checklist
- Check the cover, library entry or installed title to determine whether you have NBA JAM (2010) or NBA Jam: On Fire Edition (2011).
- Verify the console: PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 are the original platforms for NBA JAM; On Fire Edition was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
- Connect and test every controller before launching a match. The exact number supported in a particular mode is edition-specific and is not established by the platform listings alone.
- Open the game’s local exhibition, versus or multiplayer option. Select teams and players only after the second controller appears as an active participant.
- If the game displays an online-service error, back out to a local mode. A network prompt does not mean local play has been removed; it usually indicates that you selected a retired online feature.
This approach avoids a common mistake: buying a game for online use and discovering only after purchase that the remaining playable mode is local.
Does Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S make online play work?
No. Microsoft’s Xbox store currently lists On Fire Edition as playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. That is useful information if you want to run the title on newer Xbox hardware, but it is a backward-compatibility statement, not a server-status statement.

Backward compatibility generally concerns whether the console can launch the game, read its license and provide the required emulation or software layer. Online matchmaking still depends on the original publisher service. Because EA lists On Fire Edition’s online service as shut down on January 19, 2023, installing or launching the game on a newer Xbox does not recreate those servers. You may be able to use the newer console for local multiplayer if the game and controllers work as expected, but you should not expect ranked matches, public matchmaking, online co-op or other retired network modes to connect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat about unofficial remote play?
Community projects have suggested using Parsec to send a modified On Fire Edition experience from a PC to remote players. This is fundamentally different from restoring the retail game’s official online service.
Why it is experimental
- The approach depends on a modified project rather than an unaltered retail installation.
- Parsec supplies remote input and video streaming; it does not bring EA’s matchmaking, authentication or game servers back online.
- Hardware, operating-system, network-latency and controller-mapping problems can prevent a session from working.
- The community guidance specifically warns against using the altered project online on PlayStation 3, so it should not be treated as a supported PS3 workaround.
Because the project is unofficial, there is no publisher-backed guarantee of compatibility, safety, legality, persistence or performance. A remote player may experience input delay that is tolerable for a turn-based game but frustrating in a fast arcade basketball title. Changes to the project can also break saved data or require different setup steps over time.

If you decide to experiment
Use only files you are legally entitled to use, keep the modified project separate from any original installation, and avoid entering account credentials into tools supplied by unknown parties. Treat instructions from community pages as project-specific documentation, not as evidence that NBA Jam’s retail online multiplayer has returned. Do not connect an altered build to a PS3 online environment when the project’s own guidance warns against it.
Official versus unofficial: how to choose
| Option | Officially supported? | Internet required? | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local play on the original console | Uses the game’s built-in local mode, but exact support depends on edition and hardware | No | Reliable same-room multiplayer | You must be together and provide compatible controllers |
| On Fire Edition official online modes | No; service listed as shut down January 19, 2023 | Yes | Historical context only | EA servers are no longer available |
| 2010 NBA JAM online entries | No current service should be assumed; PS3 and Xbox 360 entries are in EA’s pre-2013 section | Yes | Historical context only | Those service records are not current matchmaking |
| Unofficial PC remote play with a modified project | No | Yes, for streaming between players | Experimenters who accept setup and compatibility risk | Unofficial software, latency, uncertain support and explicit PS3 cautions |
Buying a copy for multiplayer
A physical Xbox 360 copy of NBA JAM (2010) is a sensible phrase to look for if your goal is local play on compatible legacy hardware. It is not the same product as NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, which EA announced as a digital download.
Do not buy a physical 2010 copy expecting it to restore On Fire Edition’s discontinued online modes. Conversely, do not assume that locating an old On Fire Edition license will activate matchmaking; the service shutdown is separate from ownership. Availability of used copies, delisted downloads and transferable licenses varies by region and marketplace, so verify the exact edition and platform before paying.

Troubleshooting common problems
The game launches but asks to connect to a service
Choose a local mode instead of repeatedly retrying the connection. The prompt is consistent with a retired online feature and does not indicate that your router or console is necessarily defective.
The Xbox store says the game is playable, but matchmaking fails
Read “playable” as platform compatibility. Check whether you are launching On Fire Edition and remember that the Xbox listing does not override EA’s January 19, 2023 service shutdown.
A second player cannot join locally
- Confirm the second controller is powered, paired or wired, and assigned to a separate console profile where required.
- Join from the game’s local multiplayer or exhibition screen rather than an online menu.
- Check the edition and console combination; a setup that works on Xbox 360 may not have identical menus on PlayStation 3 or Wii.
- If the title is a digital copy, verify that it is fully installed and that the console recognizes the license.
A remote-play experiment has severe delay
Latency is a property of the streaming path, not proof that EA’s servers are functioning. Test with both players on wired connections where possible, reduce competing network traffic and confirm that the project’s controller mapping is correct. If the delay remains unacceptable, local play is the only dependable alternative established for this game.
The answer in one decision
If you want officially supported online matchmaking, NBA Jam is no longer a viable choice: On Fire Edition’s service is listed as shut down, and the older PS3 and Xbox 360 service entries are historical. If you want to play with someone in the same room, use the exact edition and compatible legacy console, then select its local multiplayer mode. If you are willing to troubleshoot unofficial software, a community remote-play project may be an experiment, but it is not a restoration of the retail online game and carries compatibility and safety risks.
