MRPL could merit further research, but its FY2025–26 profit rebound alone does not establish that the shares are a good long-term investment. The recovery followed a sharp improvement in refining margins, while debt increased by year-end and the business remains exposed to crude prices, product cracks, foreign exchange and working-capital needs. Because the evidence available here does not establish MRPL’s current share price or valuation, it cannot support a buy-or-sell verdict.
What kind of business is MRPL?
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) is a listed downstream petroleum company. The National Stock Exchange identifies its symbol as MRPL and its ISIN as INE103A01014; the company reports a single downstream petroleum segment. Its core investment case therefore depends heavily on how well its refinery operates and on the economics of turning crude into refined products.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) lists the refinery’s installed capacity as 15 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA). HPCL reports that MRPL processed 16.774 million metric tonnes in FY2025–26, equivalent to 112% utilization; CRISIL Ratings estimates throughput at nearly 17 million tonnes and utilization near 113%. These are differently rounded source figures for the same year, not evidence that unusually high utilization will persist.

MRPL also has a complementary aviation-fuel business through Shell MRPL Aviation Fuels and Services Limited, a joint venture in which MRPL held 50%, according to MRPL’s FY2024–25 annual report. The venture supplied aviation turbine fuel to domestic and international airlines at several Indian airports and contracted for Indian carriers’ international fuel requirements. This adds activity beyond refinery output, but the evidence does not show that it insulates the overall business from refining-margin cycles.

How cyclical are MRPL’s profits?
MRPL’s FY2025–26 results were a substantial recovery from a weak previous year. The audited consolidated filing on the National Stock Exchange reports revenue from operations of ₹105,153.68 crore and profit after tax (PAT) of ₹1,924.58 crore for FY2025–26. PAT was ₹56.21 crore in FY2024–25. Annual basic and diluted earnings per share were ₹10.98 and ₹0.32, respectively, for those years.
Those figures describe a sharp change in earnings, not a dependable long-term earnings run rate. CRISIL’s June 2026 rating analysis links the recovery to higher gross refining margins (GRMs), operational efficiency and inventory gains. It reports that MRPL’s GRM moved through markedly different levels over recent years:
| Financial year | MRPL gross refining margin | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| FY2020 | About $2.50 per barrel | CRISIL Ratings, June 2026 analysis; approximate figure. |
| FY2023–FY2024 | About $8–$11 per barrel | CRISIL Ratings, June 2026 analysis; approximate range across the two financial years. |
| FY2025 | $4.45 per barrel | CRISIL Ratings, June 2026 analysis. |
| FY2026 | About $9.22 per barrel | CRISIL Ratings, June 2026 analysis; approximate figure. |
CRISIL identifies product crack spreads, global oil-price volatility and inventory gains or losses as drivers of the changes. A strong year can therefore reflect favorable market conditions as well as operating performance. For a long-term assessment, judge earnings across a range of refining conditions rather than treating the latest annual EPS or PAT as a stable baseline.

What do the audited results say about debt and cash generation?
The same audited consolidated filing reports total borrowings of ₹14,333.70 crore at March 31, 2026, versus ₹12,866.61 crore a year earlier, and a debt-equity ratio of 1.01 versus 0.99. These are the filing’s stated consolidated measures. CRISIL’s separate analytical treatment puts debt at about ₹14,300 crore and gearing at around 1.04 times; the agency’s measure should not be treated as identical to the company filing’s ratio.
CRISIL says stronger operating performance lifted adjusted interest coverage to about 7.11 times in FY2026 from about 2.42 times in FY2025. It also attributes higher year-end borrowing largely to increased working-capital borrowing and the foreign-exchange impact on external commercial borrowings. Improved coverage is a positive credit indicator, but it does not remove the need to examine cash flow, financing costs and working-capital movements over time.
The timing of borrowing matters. MRPL’s January 14, 2026 release reported total borrowings of ₹9,290 crore at December 2025, down from ₹12,867 crore at March 2025; the audited annual filing subsequently reported the higher March 2026 balance. The interim decline alone was not a durable deleveraging trend.

What are the main risks of investing in MRPL?
Refining margins, product cracks and inventory
CRISIL describes MRPL as a standalone refinery with high sensitivity to GRMs. As the margin history shows, the economics can change substantially from one year to another. Weaker product cracks or inventory losses can weigh on results even if the refinery continues to process crude at high volumes. That is why operating throughput and accounting profit should be considered alongside the market conditions behind them.

CRISIL says MRPL imports around 80% of its crude requirement and identifies exposure to crude-price volatility and foreign-exchange movements. In its June 2026 analysis, the agency specifically noted volatility in crude prices and forex in March 2026 amid the West Asia conflict. Sourcing capability and crude diversification can support operations, but the cited evidence does not eliminate market-price or currency risk.
Debt and working-capital needs
Refining can require substantial working capital, and financing needs may shift as crude costs, inventory and foreign-exchange movements change. MRPL’s year-end borrowing increase makes it important to monitor whether operating cash flow supports investment and financing needs across different market conditions—not just during a strong-margin period.
Environmental and transition considerations
CRISIL characterizes oil and gas as carrying environmental and social impacts associated with raw-material sourcing, waste-intensive processes and direct environmental effects. The agency’s analysis reports MRPL’s stated Scope 1 and Scope 2 net-zero target for 2038 and measures reported by the company in FY2024–25, including solar energy and waste reuse or recycling. These are company-reported initiatives summarized by a rating agency; they do not establish that transition, compliance or environmental liabilities have been resolved.

High FY2025–26 throughput demonstrates that MRPL operated at scale in that year. CRISIL also describes operational, financial and managerial support from ONGC and MRPL’s strategic role in ONGC’s integrated oil-and-gas strategy. On June 5, 2026, CRISIL reaffirmed CRISIL AAA/Stable ratings for long-term facilities and debt and CRISIL A1+ ratings for short-term facilities.

Those ratings speak to credit risk and the agency’s assessment of the rated obligations. They are not an equity valuation, do not guarantee dividend continuity and cannot prevent weaker results if refining economics deteriorate. The audited filing records an interim dividend of ₹4 per share, declared on March 3, 2026 and paid; that is a past distribution, not a promise of future dividends.

What should you check before buying MRPL shares?
A long-term decision needs both an operating assessment and a valuation assessment. The available results establish a strong rebound, but they do not show what investors are currently paying for the shares. Use a repeatable checklist rather than extrapolating one year’s profit.
- Check the latest company filings. Confirm the correct latest quarterly results, subsequent borrowing, cash flow and working-capital changes. The most recent company-specific interim release in the evidence here is MRPL’s January 14, 2026 nine-month FY2025–26 release; the latest verified full-year results are audited FY2025–26 results approved on April 24, 2026.
- Assess earnings across cycles. Compare GRMs, product cracks, inventory effects and profitability across several years. Consider whether an earnings estimate still makes sense under weaker refining conditions.
- Follow operations, not utilization in isolation. Compare throughput and utilization with capacity, while checking for outages, efficiency changes and whether high volumes translate into cash generation.
- Track financing and working capital. Review total debt, interest costs, operating cash flow, interest coverage and working-capital borrowing in each reporting period. Distinguish company-reported ratios from rating-agency measures.
- Test the valuation against normalized earnings. Verify the current share price, share count and corporate actions, then compare valuation with earnings estimates that account for refining cyclicality. Use suitable listed peers for context; no peer comparison is established by the evidence presented here.
- Separate support from shareholder returns. Consider ONGC’s strategic and support role and MRPL’s credit ratings as part of the financing picture, not as evidence that the shares are cheap or that a particular return is assured.
For peer and historical comparisons, useful dimensions include normalized GRMs and crack-spread sensitivity, crude sourcing and currency exposure, throughput and operating efficiency, cash flow and debt, and the contribution of petrochemicals or other value-added activities relative to refining. The evidence here does not establish MRPL’s current market valuation, so investors should verify current market data before drawing a share-price conclusion.
