Gemini is the better fit for conversational help on a phone; Assistant remains useful for some quick actions and home-device features. Neither is a universal replacement for the other, and “Gemini calling” can mean either placing a call or a separate, limited feature that calls a business on your behalf.
What “Gemini calling” means
There are two distinct features. The first lets Gemini start an ordinary call from an Android device through its default phone app. The second, a gradually rolling-out feature, lets Gemini call certain businesses to handle tasks such as checking availability or managing an appointment. The second feature has much narrower eligibility and is not a replacement for calling people yourself.

Can Gemini make regular phone calls on Android?
Yes. Gemini can use the device’s calling app to call a saved contact, a business or a phone number. It can also use conversational context—for example, you can ask it to call a restaurant you were discussing. To make a contact call by relationship, such as “call my sister,” the relationship information must be saved. Gemini uses the device’s default phone app; if it does not select the connected app automatically, try including @Phone in the prompt. Google documents these capabilities and setup requirements in its Android calling help page.
What you need
- An Android phone or tablet with an active mobile phone plan.
- The Gemini mobile app, including when Gemini is set as the mobile assistant.
- The required Google app permission to use the Android Phone app.
- Saved and synced contact details if you want to call someone by name.
Calls that depend on another service—for example, using Google Maps to find a nearby business—may fail if Keep Activity is off. Calling is not available in Gemini Live chats, in Gemini on the web, or in Gemini in Google Messages.

What Gemini cannot do through the Phone app
The Gemini Phone app cannot accept or reject incoming calls. For emergency services, Google directs users to place the call directly in the device’s calling app rather than through Gemini. A voice request to start an ordinary call is not the same as handing Gemini control over incoming or emergency calls.
How Gemini and Google Assistant differ on a phone
Gemini is designed for broader, conversational requests and can use context from the conversation to help with a call. Google Assistant still powers some familiar quick voice actions, depending on settings. Google cautions that some Assistant features may not be supported in Gemini, and specifically lists Interpreter mode and some podcast, news, radio and third-party music services among the unsupported features when Gemini is the primary mobile assistant. Availability also varies by language and account; “Hey Google” and Voice Match can launch Gemini, but are not available for supervised accounts. Choosing Gemini as the primary assistant applies to the eligible mobile device; it does not replace Assistant everywhere. Google says smart speakers, displays, TVs, cars and locked Pixel Tablets continue to use Assistant. If a phone feature you rely on is missing, Google says you can switch back to Assistant. Calling from Google speakers and displays
Google Assistant supports voice calls on Google smart speakers and displays, and video calls on compatible smart displays. Supported calling methods, models and locations differ: Google’s documentation describes Google Meet calling and, in the US and Canada, Google-supported or mobile calling with Google Fi and Google Voice. The device page distinguishes supported one-to-one and group calls and identifies which displays support video. Check the current Google speaker and display calling guidance for your model and region rather than assuming every Nest device supports every call type.
This is a practical reason to keep using Assistant at home: compatible hardware can enable hands-free calls without picking up a phone. It does not mean Assistant is categorically better for phone calls—Gemini can also start ordinary calls on Android, but the device and calling method are different.
Gemini’s separate business-calling feature
Google also documents a feature that has Gemini call a business to ask about hours, product availability or service quotes; book, confirm or manage appointments and reservations; navigate phone menus; or wait on hold. This is distinct from asking Gemini to call a number through your phone app.

As described in Google’s business-calling help page, eligibility requires being 18 or older and in the US, using a Pixel 11 with a US SIM, being signed in to the Gemini app, having a Google AI subscription, using the Public Beta Phone by Google app and the latest Gemini app, and setting the device language to English. Google says rollout is gradual, so eligibility does not guarantee that the feature is available to every user.
The calls use the user’s mobile network and phone number, so standard carrier rates apply. Google says each call begins by disclosing that an AI assistant is calling on the user’s behalf and that the line is recorded, and by stating the user’s name. The user reviews the proposed number and details, can monitor and take over the call, and receives a summary afterward; the transcript and recording are available in Phone app call history. Google imposes daily call limits but does not state a number in the help page. Gemini cannot use this feature for emergency calls, payments or other financial transactions, or to relay sensitive information such as passwords, financial details, Social Security numbers or health information.

For most Android users choosing a primary phone assistant, Gemini is the natural starting point if conversational help and initiating calls are the priorities. Keep or switch to Assistant when a particular unsupported phone feature matters, or use it on compatible speakers and displays. Check the exact feature on the device you use: eligibility and capabilities vary by device, region, language, account and rollout.
