Koofr describes several safeguards for its cloud storage, but standard Koofr storage is not presented as end-to-end or zero-knowledge encrypted. The company says it uses SSL/TLS for transfers and server-side encryption for stored files. For client-side, zero-knowledge encryption, Koofr offers the optional Koofr Vault. You can also enable two-factor authentication, but you must keep its recovery codes safe: Koofr says support cannot restore access if you lose your second factor.
What Koofr’s security claims mean
Koofr’s help and feature pages describe several layers of protection. These are the company’s descriptions of its service, not findings from an independent security review.

- In transit: Koofr says file transfers use SSL/TLS, which protects data as it travels between your device and the service.
- On its servers: Koofr says files are encrypted after upload. Server-side encryption is not the same as client-side encryption: by itself, it does not mean only you can decrypt your files.
- Storage redundancy: Koofr says each file is stored in at least three physically separate locations. This is a claim about redundancy, not a guarantee that data cannot be lost or accessed.
- Metadata separation: Koofr says metadata, including file names and ownership information, is kept separately from file content, and that decryption keys and metadata are stored separately from content.
These descriptions can help readers understand the service’s design, but they do not establish its resistance to every threat or substitute for independent verification. See Koofr’s help center, features page, and privacy policy.

Koofr describes ordinary storage as using server-side encryption. The reviewed product information does not say that standard storage is end-to-end or zero-knowledge encrypted. Those terms refer to a different arrangement: files are encrypted on your device before upload, with the service unable to access the decryption key.

What Koofr Vault adds
Koofr presents Vault as an optional client-side encryption feature. It says Vault encrypts files on your device before they leave it and that only you know the encryption key. Koofr also says Vault is open source. These are Koofr’s statements; the reviewed information does not establish an independent cryptographic audit.
Vault is the relevant option if your priority is limiting the cloud provider’s ability to read file contents. It also makes your key your responsibility: protect it and make sure you understand how you will regain access to encrypted files if you lose access to your account or device. What Koofr says about privacy and data location
Koofr’s privacy policy identifies Koofr d.o.o., based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, as the data controller. Separately, Koofr says its file servers are in Germany, within the EU, at ISO 27001-certified data centers. The stated data-center certification should not be read as proof that every Koofr security control has been independently certified.
According to the privacy policy, an account requires a name and email address. Paid purchases may require billing details, with payment processing handled by a third party. Koofr says it logs selected service events, including password changes, uploads, deletions, and link creation, and retains those event logs for three months. It says account-deletion requests are processed within 30 days, except where records such as invoices must be kept by law.

How to secure your Koofr account
Encryption of stored files does not prevent someone from taking over an account with a stolen password. Koofr documents two second-factor options: a TOTP authenticator app and FIDO2 passkeys.

Choose a second factor
- Passkey: Koofr says passkeys verify the site domain and provide stronger phishing protection than one-time codes. Options include a device PIN, biometrics, a smart device, or a physical security key such as a YubiKey.
- TOTP app: An authenticator app generates one-time codes. This is an alternative if you do not want to use a passkey.
Koofr says you can add multiple second factors. A backup factor can reduce the chance of being locked out if your primary device is lost.
Save recovery codes before you need them
Koofr provides ten one-time recovery codes. Its help page says these codes are the way to regain access if your second factor is unavailable and warns that support cannot restore access to an account with 2FA enabled. Store the codes somewhere separate from your usual sign-in device, such as a secure password manager or another protected location. Do not leave the only copy on a device you might lose.

Use a unique password
Use a strong password that you do not reuse on other sites. A password manager can help you generate and store a unique one. Enable a second factor and make sure you have retained recovery codes; Koofr documents setup and recovery in its help center.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who Koofr may suit—and where the limits are
- Suitable for ordinary cloud-storage needs: Koofr describes encrypted transfers, server-side encryption, data-center hosting in Germany, and file redundancy. These protections can be useful, but the claims are vendor-stated.
- Consider Vault for sensitive content: If you want files encrypted on your device before upload, Koofr identifies Vault as its client-side, zero-knowledge option. Its key-management implications matter: losing the key may mean losing access to the encrypted files.
- Do not treat account security as automatic: A strong, unique password and a configured second factor help address account takeover. Recovery codes need separate, secure storage.
The official pages reviewed describe Koofr’s architecture and privacy practices, but do not establish independent penetration-test results, an independent cryptographic review, or a regulator’s finding about the service. No cloud provider can be called completely safe on the basis of these descriptions alone.
